TMNT comic co-creator says new film will make fans "incredibly happy"

Apr. 25, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

Earlier this month Peter Laird (one of the creators of the TMNT comics) shared his thoughts on the upcoming reboot, and the other co-creator, Kevin Eastman, has a few things to say about the Jonathan Liebesman directed/Michael Bay produced film as well.

Peter Laird has a few issues with TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (although he was very polite about it), however Kevin Eastman sounds a bit more optimistic about the project in his interview with CBR.

It's been a four, almost five-year journey to bring the next "Turtles" movie to life since the time we pitched it. I know everybody is like, "Oh, Michael Bay, Michael Bay, Michael Bay, he's gonna ruin it! He's gonna destroy it!" But everyone I have encountered has been nothing more than incredibly sincere to try and bring the Turtles back in a way that's new, fresh and exciting, but with total respect to everything that's come before. I've read the script. I have a cameo in the move. It's awesome -- really fun.

What they've done with the film is going to make fans incredibly happy, including myself. The vision is awesome, the effects are incredible and the story will be something everybody can relate to and like. I'll leave it out there for the fans to let us know what they like in the end, but I'm very proud to be part of it. A lot of people are going to be surprised.

I wonder which fans will be incredibly happy though: kids who are fans of the new comics and animated series, or adults who love the original comics, cartoons and movies. I still want to see TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, but there are some things I'm definitely not digging about the new film.

A new image from TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES has also landed online, featuring Megan Fox's April O'Neil, Will Arnett's Vernon Fenwick, and what looks like a few members of the Foot Clan, who I assume just got the snot kicked out of them by the Turtles.

Synopsis:

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

Jonathan Liebesman's TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES also stars William Fichtner, Tony Shalhoub, Johnny Knoxville, Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard and Whoopi Goldberg, and will be in theaters on August 8th, 2014.

Sounds like he got a sneak peak to the finished movie. Strangely enough, I watched the original TMNT movie again. I enjoyed it as a kid but now I just realized how the whole movie was very dark despite the very colorful cartoon show at the time. Kids nowadays might not like it but they might like the new Michael Bay's TMNT movie. Hopefully I will enjoy it too.

Yes, that is very badass. The costumes for the Turtles, Shredder were great although Casey Jones' costume looked homemade. Maybe that's the whole point.

The first film also has one of the coolest mysterious introductions to a main villain in my opinion. With a wall of televisions of April talking about the foot clan silhouetting The Shreddar as he chucks a dagger in one of the TV's. "Find her. Silence her." For a kids movie, that's intense. And still bad ass.

That made sense. I often wonder why the Turtles didn't use their weapons in Secret of the Ooze. Regardless of their weapons, Secret of the Ooze is really fun to watch.

Part of why Secret of the Ooze is more light-hearted was because TMNT 1 was a darker film. That's also why weapons were traded in, slightly, in TMNT II. I am looking forward to the new movie. Sure it is gonna be different, but I will give it a fair chance. The designs are...interesting and the armour on Leo is the only thing I dig, but again, I will watch, probably opening night, and hope I enjoy the shell out it.

I will admit that the fact that she is so enthusiastic about it does intrigue me slightly, but I honestly just can't see a single thing about this of any quality. This is not somebody speaking as a nostalgic, fanboy who is butt hurt that they didn't repeat themselves and make a duplicate of the original movie or something like that. I just literally don't see anything that looks good about this new incarnation. It doesn't even remotely resemble the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that everybody

Again I am not just referring to one of the old movies, but the comics, the cartoon or anything else. It's like the brand new concept entirely. Since it is based on something that millions of people grew up on, you can't just throw all of that away and start new. I suppose at the end of the day we will just have to wait and see for ourselves but I will be absolutely astounded if my mind changes.

Don't get the hate

Are people really expecting a movie about mutated, karate-knowledgeable, talking turtles to be the next 12 Years a Slave, or even Batman Begins? Come back to earth, guys. This movie is intended to be fun. I know a lot of you hate Michael Bay because the internet tells you to, but when it comes to fun movies, he has more hits than misses.

nobody is expecting 12 years a slave. we're just expecting the TMNT we all know.

it'd be like seeing a trailer for a new batman movie, only it was a comedy, batman wore a maskless orange suit, and had super powers.

Like almost any movie, its completely up to personal preference. That why my comment said "depends on your definition". What slimbo failed to acknowledge about my comment, is that I have actually seen all of these movies. This isnt just misplaced Michael Bay hate. I plan on seeing TMNT, and I love when something that many expect to hate turns out great. And as far as the big FU that I got for disagreeing with ya slimbo, back at ya bud ;)

Don't know if you were being serious or not, but that's a little harsh.

And I actually think some of Bay's stronger films are The Island, Pain and Gain, and especially Armageddon.

More hits than misses? I guess that depends on your definition. By my count, its just the opposite. There are some solid movies under his belt to be certain (Bad Boys 1+2, The Rock), but for the most part I dont care to ever watch most of his movies again (Transformers 1,2, +3, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, The Island, Pain + Gain).

I wonder if his cameo in the movie has anything to do with his positive outlook? Not trying to talk shit, just giving you fellow movie lovers something to think about.

I'm just hoping for this film to be fun with the same spirit of the original first TMNT film. I'm not expecting it to surpass it, but maybe it can be in the same tone and attitude.

hmmm two creators of TMNT...

One of them has a cameo in the movie, read the script, and is generally excited.
The other seems to have been left out and does not agree with the new designs.

makes sense. sounds like one got PAID and the other didn't.

Bart: How could you, Krusty? I never lend my name to an inferior product.
Krusty: (gasps and sobs) They drove a dump truck full of money up to my house! I'm not made of stone!

Being a fan of the turtles since i was a kid (a looooong time ago) i look at these turtles and think back to the many versions ive seen over the years.(my faves being the hulking snapping turtles who all carried swords) personally I think they fit in just fine. Fanboys always have a gripe with things (affleck as batman, ledger as joker, could go on) and stick with that gripe until the finished product is awesome then everybody tries to retract what they say. Give the green guys at least a shot

To be honest, Eastman has been actively involved in the current resurgence of the TMNT, both with the Nickelodeon series and the IDW comics. I haven't seen that kind of involvement from Laird in a long time. If Eastman approves, I'm all for it.
