TMNT for 2012

10.21.2009

Before we begin, this article has nothing to do with the prophecies and hype of 2012. Nor did Roland Emmerich secretly place the turtles in his movie.

So, if you're still with me, today Nickelodeon (Viacom) picked up the global rights to TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. They plan on doing a new movie in 2012 as well as a television show that will be CG-animated. Nick's sister company, Paramount will be taking on the movie.

There are no details as to whether it will be live action or CG but they do have Scott Mednick (300, WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE) set to produce. Any turtle news makes me want to jump up and down, but even the slight possibility that they would ever do live action again would be awesome! The last time I did a piece having to do with TMNT a lot of you were with me on doing a live action over another CG movie. Hopefully they hear our cries.

Also, if you regularly watch the latest TMNT animated show on CW4Kids on Saturday morning, the show will still air on that channel until August 31st. So what say you? Are you ready or not?

Extra Tidbit: One last thing...TURTLE POWER! I know, I'm a dork.

Live Action for Theaters!

I would a see a live action in theaters and wait for a CG movie to go to DVD so if that persuades any execs, there you go...

@ smooveluv: I agree with what you're saying, it's got me scratching my head in confusion, not saying another turtle movie, if done right would be a bad thing either, as long as, PLEASE, PLEASE don't let it be the same old orginal storyline as the rest of them starting out, just about everyone know where the turtles came from, and all the intro plot, bring something fresh to the table without retelling what we already know, use the comics for source material and I'm sure it'll good.

I say take the technology they used in Where the Wild Things Are and use that for a new movie.

Also, I thought there was one in development that was half cg half life action announced a while back? Is that now dead since Nick bought the rights?

love to see it but....

only if it's live action. The last animated one was ok, but I'd really like another live action film. The first one was really good butthey went downhill after that. I'd like to see a darker film. One more for adults than kids. It would be cool to have Corey Feldman come back as well! Bosinova! uh.. Chevy Nova? LOL!

Interesting, I waa gonna say CG would probably work better, it wasn't the CG that was the reason the other film was crap, it was the terrible story (Donatello and Michelangelo were basically side characters), but if they get a good FX crew for a live action and make the turtles look good, (as good as abe sapien did in Hellboy) then Live action could be cool. As long as it's better than the last movie, I'm excited.

I honestly don't understand...

what it is about this franchise that has legs. I grew up reading the first comics along with Cerebus. There was the cartoon and the first set of movies. Are humanoid turtles really that much of an archetype that you can keep generation after generation interested? I'm not saying this is a bad idea, just that I genuinely don't understand how they can keep going back to the well on this, and so frequently - didn't they just do a CGI one a few years back?

It's not just the fact that they're humanoid turtles, but interesting characters and there is an interesting CGI movie a few years back sucked, so there is interest for them to make a good one.

yeah, but why not? Kids love talking animals dude, and then with the nostalgia they get the adults too, which some have kids of their own by now too. It's money in the bank. Plus, I just like the story itself.

I'm old school too, and for some reason, the thought of Nickelodean being in control of the turtles does not sit well with me. What was the last theaterical live-action movie Nickelodeon released anyway? Good Burger? Fuck if I know. I want the turtles to be guys in costumes, but.... eh. I'm just taking jabs at the air. Wake me up when there's solid news about the way the movie is being made.

If it's live action I'm all for it. The cgi TMNT was ok, but there's nothing special about watching cgi ninja fights.

GO NINJA, GO NINJA, GO!

Now THAT'S being fucking dorky! But seriously, this is awesome. Any new turtles is good. TMNT was better than I expected (Mikey wanting to put his stuffed head on the shelf at the end killed me) and knowing they might go back to live action puts a goofy grin on my face.

HEROES IN A HALF SHELL!

I'm Concerned!

Is anyone else concerned that nickelodeon just bought up Ninja Turtles?! Remember when Mirage and Warner bros were making the new movie for 2011, and they said they were going back to the dark and gritty roots of the turtles. Legendary pictures, Scott Mednick, the people behind Where the wild things are were producing it. Are those plans staying? or are they making a completely different movie? I'm not happy about this, I was happy when WB, Mirage, and LP were behind the new movie.

Yes!

I'm guessing that Niki, drc5145, Huttjos, and I are all from the same generation of Turtles fans.

Niki, frankly, you're in good company when it comes to being a dork. Loved that show.

As for the news, I would jump for the chance to see another live-actiuon movie. I remember reading the live-action movie would use the Facial CGI used for Wild Things. If they movie showed anything, it's that it's brilliant when used well. That and the Jim Henson Puppets/Suits.

gameslave...no motion capture:/ Even though in todays world it would be very doable, I just want my generations turtles back! I was very against the cgi TMNT at first but after I watched it I was very impressed with it. Even though motion capture is there, I don't want to see it that way.

I want the down and dirty live action Nickelodeon! Turtles 1 was so good and very realistic, I loved it. 2 was just down right fun, and three was....neat. I am going to be giddy about this movie news

Here's an idea:

I know its nicklodeon so this may be a stretch, but if they can get a decent script, and a decent budget, they can get the CG motion capture technology from Avatar and make this movie live action with the Turtles being CG. They would look amazing.
