To sequel or not to sequel, that is the question: Constantine

3 years agoby:

2S or not 2 S - Constantine title

Some people call CONSTANTINE a "guilty pleasure."  Some don't really dig it.  And some, like me, are very willing to say that they love it.  I love the art direction and how the well-done effects impressively realize the fiery decay of Hell and its minions.  I love the dialogue exchanges and the fact that I'm for once not bored by Shia LaBeouf.  I love how the action/event sequences play out in unexpcted ways and the personal journeys the characters have to take.  I love the wild, world-ending plot.  And I love the performances, Peter Stormare most of all and Keanu Reeves far from least of all.  To my mind he is able to take what makes him Keanu Reeves and mold those qualities to fit the grim, noir-like tone of the character and the disturbing world in which he inhabits.

CONSTANTINE is the very definition of a solid movie, one that is far from awful and not far at all from great.  Whenever I put it on I am surprised anew by just how sucked in I become.  Whether I'm studying the visual world created by director Francis Lawrence, laughing at some quip from John Constatine, or grimacing in disgust at some horrible creature/character fate, I'm always genuinely entertained.  And so it has always saddened me that there wasn't a follow-up, something to take the world that was established and run with it in a new and exciting cinematic direction.

2S or not 2 S - Constantine 2

It is of course very true that not all sequels are made equal, and there are certain criteria that make some more successful than others insofar as "good filmmaking" goes.

1) Is there an organic place for a sequel to go? There are so many places that it's not even fair.  The filmmakers could outright adapt any of the plethora of comics featuring CONSTANTINE that are running around, or they could go the Nolan route and take inspiration while crafting their own rendition.  Either way, the material is there.  The characters are established.  The world is rich.  A CONSTANTINE sequel could go a dozen different ways, and they would all be equally valid.

2) Is there somewhere for the characters to go? While CONSTANTINE does a solid enough job wrapping up this particular adventure and John Constatine's growth as a human being/character, that doesn't mean he has nowhere to go.  On the contrary, he has a very specific (and fascinating) place to go: down.  Way the hell down, pun intended.  Not that he needs to be taken "darker" or anything, but CONSTANTINE ends with John on something of a high note having saved humanity and quit smoking at the same time.  But that only means that a subsequent fall would hit him and those he cares about all the harder, giving him a path towards finding the "belief" that Gabriel spoke of rather than the "knowledge" he currently possesses.  On that note, Gabriel of course has a very interesting new place in this mortal world that would be interesting to explore.  John's relationship with her, as well as with other characters such as Papa Midnight, could make for some really meaty moviemaking.

3) Is there somewhere for the story to go that isn't just a rehash? There's only one way to really answer this: see #1.

4) Would it make the first movie better? Yes, precisely because such a troubled character was left on a light note amidst an altogether intriguing cinematic world.  Of course the comics play host to John Constatine's expanded world and all of the strange and unique characters therein, but the cinematic rendition of his story realized the world rather well.  And yet there are so many aspects of the world left unspoken of, characters put aside, and powers unrealized that it's a downright shame.    And speaking of #2's reference to the distinction made by Gabriel to John, CONSTANTINE left John's story unfinished.  He hasn't reached a place of belief rather than knowledge, nor has his fate been decided should it be impossible for him to reach such a point.  I'd say there's plenty of room to enhance the impact of the first movie with the addition of a second.

5) Is it possible to guarantee more of Rachel Weisz wearing a soaking-wet white shirt? "Guarantee" may be a bit of a strong word, but Weisz has shown in the years since CONSTANTINE that she is still a friend to the world of genre cinema.  Not to mention how she still maintains the sort of star power that would help (even in some small way) to get folks into theaters.  And while he wasn't part of the question, I imagine that Peter Stormare would be game for another turn as Lucifer - his performance was so unexpected, quirky, and terrifying that he must have had an absolute ball being involved.  And it would awfully difficult to tell another CONSTANTINE tale without the involvement of Lucifer, so let's just go ahead and say that the two of them would tag along if a sequel ever came to pass.

Rachel Weisz and Peter Stormare

So that's what I think, though those thoughts of course only raise more questions.  Would the new story acknowledge the passage of time between 2005 and now and the toll it may have taken on the actors involved? Should the plot seek to top that of the first movie, or maintain the same level of weight and impact while dealing primarily with the journey of the characters? How could the plot be topped? What new characters might be brought in from the comics or created fresh?

For now though, leave your responses below and we'll tally the results for the next column!

SO DO YOU THINK THEY SHOULD MAKE A SEQUEL OR NOT?

Keanu Reeves and Tilda Swinton

Extra Tidbit: Last week's subject was Tim Burton's SLEEPY HOLLOW, with the general consensus being that a sequel might be kind of fun but far from actively hoped for. Which I think counts more as a "no" than anything else.

I actually really like the first one and would like to see the story expanded in a second. I actually think the world is rich enough that you could have films set in the same universe but focusing on different characters, both because it's rich, and also because the mainstream audience probably doesnt have much of a vested interest in any of the characters from 1. The overall story seems more appealing. Id like to see John team up with some other ass kicking characters, like Blade 2.

I've heard plenty of people complain about Constantine. I don't get it. Stormare's Satan was terrific. Blanchett was freaky. Weisz is gorgeous. Heck even The Beef was pretty entertaining. And of any of Keanu's roles, I thought he did this one the best, with his limited abilities. I enjoyed the crap out of this movie, and it's not generally my thing. I doubt we'll ever see a sequel. But I don't mind. I'll still enjoy Constantine.

I loved the first film and at the risk of sounding like a teenage hipster, its basically because the movie was simply COOL. I never read a single Hellblazer comics or even knew the name Constantine before I saw it, but the whole horror-fantasy world of Constantine just sucked me in from the very first scene. The hellish settings were great, the visual effects were awesome, there's actually quite an interesting story there and above all, Keanu and Weisz were just perfect with their respective

I'm not much of a demonic movie fan, but this film worked for me, because it was a WHOLE LOT OF FUN!

i was really looking forward to a sequel, but as years go by, surprisingly there' s still no talks. Moreso, when you can see the movie did not bad at boxoffice with almost 250M worldwide gross (not a blockbuster by any means, but still not too shabby to greenlit a sequel). So, YES, I'll be down for a sequel (or two) ANYTIME they want to. And truth be told, I really miss Keanu on screen, and the sooner he returns as Constantine, the better (but please NO REBOOT!).

this is a great movie and a greater character. He's like the James Bond of the spernatural world. And what a shame it would be if Bond stopped at Dr No.

Really enjoyed the first one, I have it on DVD and I always go back to it every couple of months its such a fun movie. There were alot of changes that they made from the comics but I can get past those. I would love to see a sequel to this film, I've always have. Would be awesome if they would bring in Swampthing into the sequel cause that alone would make it a must see.

As a movie in it's own right, Constantine is fine and I'd watch a sequel.
Having said that, I'd rather see a proper adaptation of Hellblazer with Constantine as a bleach blonde scouser.
Why not do both?

Every thing about this movie was...

Good. Not awesomely spectacular but solidly good, minus Gavin Rossdale's performance, it seemed a little stiff. Of course it deserves a sequel, if shit like Step Up could get multiple sequels this deserves at least 2.

Thanks for the reply Nightwalker, totally understand where you're coming from. I guess a lot of fans were a little upset that the film changed John from a Brit to an American, and Keanu Reeves didn't seem to look or act very much like how John does in the books. I was looking at Mattel's Constantine figure thinking "this looks a lot like Clive Owen", and I've seen it suggested elsewhere online that either Owen or Daniel Craig take the role. I think John's meant to be a tough-guy Brit noir-ish

The film's not a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it would be great if it hewed closer to those character traits, I guess. But would I be up for a sequel with Keanu returning? Absolutely.

Sorry Bro, this time can't agree with you. A reboot is only necessary when they stumbled with at the beginning of a potential francise (like Daredevil, Elektra, Phantom etc.) or a once good series fissled out in time (like Star Trek, or Batman). Why redo a thing where everything worked well the first time (in my eyes anyway)?

I haven't seen Constantine in a while, but I remember it being surprisingly good. And it absolutely lends itself to getting a sequel. While I'm always a bit nervous when so many years pass between original film and sequel (I'm sure a bunch of people don't even know about this movie), it's one of the most compelling roles Keanu Reeves has ever played.

I dig this flick. Anytime I even talk about this movie with other people, I have to watch it within a few days because I can't get it out of my mind. Extremely memorable scenes (the Priest and his drinking "problem", the exorcism and the mirror, the forearm glyphs, the bathtub baptism) make for a memorable flick.

I've always hoped they'd do a sequel. Hell even the lead singer of Bush is good in that movie. Constantine is the kind of character that you could probably make a dozen movies out

I would have to agree with this column. I found that I liked this movie way more than most. Going into the movie not familiar with the comics at all, this movie grabbed my fascination. Since I've seen the movie I have read most of the comics and have a greater appreciation of the movie. This world that Constantine is in is so vast and like nothing else out there right now that if done right I do believe that a great sequel can be made of it.

I wouldn't mind a sequel to this...

I wouldn't particularly care if there wasn't a follow up, being as the first film wrapped up so nicely, but I think this is one of few films in which a sequel wouldn't be terrible. I honestly don't get the hate that the original got. It was a well made movie with an amazing cast. I'd love to see more. More Swinton, more Stormare, more Weitz, and oddly enough, I'd love to see more Reeves. I wouldn't even mind seeing LeBeouf and Rossdale return, assuming they could be brought back in a way

I think a natural place for the story to go is to have Constantine trying to live life on the straight and narrow, keeping himself from committing any sin that would potentially send him back to hell, while Lu and his forces try to force his hand. I could see a character like Mephistopheles (from Faust) being sent to try and collect his soul, by any means of necessary.

"Hell" Yes!

I could not agree more with this article or Mr. Stepenberg's opinions. This was one movie that really surprises me that it didn't do well or have so many negative opinions towards it. I've never read any of the comics and maybe that's the difference, but yeah some great performances, excellent fx, a really engaging storyline, and even a likeable shia laboeuf . yes I would love a sequel so long as it's done with the same kind of love as the first one was made with.

Hell of a movie...

Seen this in the theater and enjoyed it greatly. Would love to have a sequel and the more of Lucifer the better. Such a great take on that character. The world was a great touch as well. All of these actors could easily get together for this, the only thing I see happening would be Shia bitching about wanting more money and being the star or some shit.

Sure!

.... at least thats what I would've said about 5 years ago. I liked the original but why come out with a sequel nearly 8 years after the original? X-Files tried that with their last few flicks but they have the luxury of having a HUGE cult fan base. Unfortunately Constantine doesn't have that big of a fan base. Again, would I like a sequel? Sure. But does it make sense? No. Like the saying goes, "Just because you can doesn't mean should."

Alejandro, I love you for writing this post. This is one of my favorite films, and I always wanted to see a sequel for it. I think the film itself took a while to come out because I remember seeing trailers way in advance but with no release in sight. Maybe I was just impatient. I love all of the religion aspects in it, and the acting is great, even Keanu. Gavin Rossdale wasn't so bad, either. That being said, I would only want to see another if it is with the same cast, director, and

I don't know about a sequel, maybe a reboot. Its a solid movie like you said. Keanu was okay, but he just wasn't Constantine, that miserable bastard magician that you love even tho he's a bastard. The elements were there it just felt like it came up a bit short to merit a sequel. Props to Djimon Hounsou tho, he played Papa Midnight perfectly.

YES!!! of course, anyone who likes this sort of movie, should indeed love Constantine. Been waiting for a sequel for quite some time now along with everyone else. I check online about once a year or so to see if anything is a foot. Next section not so much about movies but crappy people....but read on esp. if you don't know about this guy.

I check online about once a year or so to see if anything is a foot. Next section not so much about movies but crappy people....but read on esp. if you don't know about this guy.
I also used to check for a Jeepers Creepers 3.....ah ah ah ah not so fast, not anywhere near the quality of Constantine no doubt but just a fun little movie, that's all, nothing more. The only problem I have with Jeepers Creepers is that of the writer and director Victor Salva....molested a 12 year old boy and video taped it. This is pretty much the scum of the earth. I've heard that Hollywood is filled with these types though, its no wonder that this guy got so many directing jobs, even from Disney, after he molested that kid. Who knows how many kids he did this to and wasn't caught on....That's always the question I ask myself when someone does something so vile like this. So a few years ago when I found out about Victor Salva I stopped checking to see if Jeepers Creepers 3 was made yet. He also very disgustingly directed Peaceful Warrior....having read the book when I was younger I liked the premise and spiritual teaching of it; but to find out that the director messed up this kids life for gods knows how long was helming a spiritual movie like this was gross to me. I'm sorry but if this guy had feelings like this for children then he should of actively seeked professional help instead of screwing with some poor kid; again, we really don't know how many others there were, and from what I've seen and heard, there usually are. I also remember hearing Corey Feldmans accounts that he's been molested by a very powerful man in Hollywood and that people know about it in those coveted circles; but because he's so powerful that he gets away with it, cause he can ruin peoples careers...IDK but I doubt anyone would, esp. a guy, would make up that he was molested...just not something a man would do, doesn't sit well. He said he was going to give the guy up in his new book, but we'll see, maybe it is a publicity stunt, again IDK..Corey Haim claimed he was molested too by someone else in the industry. But again neither one has told anyone who it was....So, they are letting this person get away with that type of behavior and potentially and probably letting them do it to other kids. Crazy, but then again, so are those two, or were IDK....enough....if you read all this junk, god bless ya don't know how you did it. I have the runs of typing. CHeers
