Tom Cruise and Doug Liman reunite for El Presidente; Jack Nicholson eyed for role

Nov. 19, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Doug Liman and Tom Cruise are teaming up once again for a comedy titled EL PRESIDENTE.

The movie would star Cruise as, "a straight-arrow Secret Service agent who is assigned to protect America's worst former president, an alcoholic and womanizing sleazebag who was elevated from VP when the president died. When a threat is made on his life, the duo must go on the run."

There's a slight catch here though-- it's being said that Cruise won't do the movie unless Jack Nicholson signs on to play the role of the president. Both Liman and Cruise recently paid a visit to the 76-year old actor to try to convince him to come aboard the comedy. Insiders say that Nicholson only agreed to take a look at the script. That's it.

The project has been in development since 2010, and originally had Jay Roach (MEET THE PARENTS) attached to direct. Liman was recently hired as director.

This could be a cool thing since it would reunite Cruise and Nicholson who were both in 1992s A FEW GOOD MEN. Will they throw in a "You can't handle the truth!" joke? I do hope they get him.

Wait

Do we all have short term memories and forgotten that Jack retired from acting a few months ago?

ok I admit I love Tom Cruise

He just strikes as one of the last true movie stars. So with that being said I think he was always more suited for comedy. he seems to have a self deprecating humor to him (minus his religion) and I always thought he showed more range in his comedic adventures. I always thought he would be great in a Judd Aptow flick or something, so I am all for this.

I have a question. Why is it called EL PRESIDENTE? Are they going to mexico or something? Did they want a hispanic actor for the role before Jack Nicholson?

would love to see them together again. A Few Good Men was GREAT, and to see them in a comedy together would be glorious! Come on Captain Jack, make it happen! LOL

What exactly are they reuniting from?

The headline says they're reuniting, but I'm dubious they've worked together before.

Sounds like a solid idea. Especially for a comedy with cruise involved. Cruise has the chops to pull off some comedic antics. Having jack Nicholson along for the ride will make it that more fun. But odd choice for a director who's done action movies , and directed cruise in his upcoming edge of tomorrow.

No way will this be as funny as White House down

Seriously tho, sounds good. I like that Cruise is demanding Jack for the part. What other movie did Liman and Cruise do?

And Nicholson has played a president in Mars Attacks, too! If this is the casting we're ending up with, there's all sorts of potential for a good time at the movies. I really think Tom Cruise should be in more comedies. Knight and Day and Rock of Ages were...lacklustre.

Rock of Ages was indeed lackluster but Cruise was superb in it, in fact, I thought he was the only saving grace to that mess.

This sounds cool, but when did Tom Cruise and Doug Liman work together? I'm drawing a total blank.

Tom Cruise will be in "Edge of Tomorrow" (formerly known as "All You Need Is Kill") which Liman will be directing and will be out next year.

YES! I love this! Jack is hilarious and Cruise is hilarious when under stress like dealing with Cubas antics in Jerry Maguire. This is going to be hilarious!
