Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. might bring the laughs in El Presidente

Jay Roach (MEET THE PARENTS) is currently in negotiations to direct the comedy, EL PRESIDENTE for Warner Brothers. The script comes from PARKS AND RECREATION writer Dan Goor.

The film centers on, “an overzealous Secret Service agent whose work-life boundary issues get him reassigned to the inglorious task of guarding America’s worst former president, who is a bumbling sleaze. The job suddenly becomes exciting when a threat is made on the ex-president’s life and they must go on the run.”

Okay, doesn’t sound too bad so far. What will make it better? Adding Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise to the mix in the leading roles. Downey Jr. is being looked at for the role of the president with Cruise as the possible secret service agent.

Warner Bros. already have a good relationship with Downey, but apparently got on the Cruise bandwagon after seeing his work in ROCK OF AGES. I haven’t seen ROCK OF AGES yet, but that’s what they needed to see to know he could do a comedy? Um, what about TROPIC THUNDER? They were both in that movie….doing comedy.

Personally, I’d like to see this one, so I hope they both join.
