Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. might bring the laughs in El Presidente

May. 14, 2012by: Niki Stephens

Jay Roach (MEET THE PARENTS) is currently in negotiations to direct the comedy, EL PRESIDENTE for Warner Brothers. The script comes from PARKS AND RECREATION writer Dan Goor.

The film centers on, "an overzealous Secret Service agent whose work-life boundary issues get him reassigned to the inglorious task of guarding America's worst former president, who is a bumbling sleaze. The job suddenly becomes exciting when a threat is made on the ex-president's life and they must go on the run."

Okay, doesn't sound too bad so far. What will make it better? Adding Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise to the mix in the leading roles. Downey Jr. is being looked at for the role of the president with Cruise as the possible secret service agent.

Warner Bros. already have a good relationship with Downey, but apparently got on the Cruise bandwagon after seeing his work in ROCK OF AGES. I haven't seen ROCK OF AGES yet, but that's what they needed to see to know he could do a comedy? Um, what about TROPIC THUNDER? They were both in that movie....doing comedy.

Personally, I'd like to see this one, so I hope they both join.

This sound great. Meet the Parents is a classic comedy. Cruise has proven he can be a funny man. And Downey is Downey, no need for further explanation.

If they're smart

They'll resist typecasting and have Cruise play the President and have RDJ play the agent. Think Franco & Rogen in Pineapple Express...putting the funnier actor in the 'straight man' role and the serious actor in the 'doofus' role. Voila...both characters are funny and relatable.

And also because I think Tom 'still gives me the creeps' Cruise would make a great reviled politician.

That too could totally work because I can see Tom doing a Leslie Nielsen-like deadpan impression while RDJ would be like the Nic Angel character in HotFuzz.

Good call.

It's interesting that Cruise is being looked at to play the secret service agent, because JoBlo writer Alex Maidy had an idea called "Executive Suspect" where Tom Cruise plays a president framed for murder and Will Smith is a secret service agent who believes him. This sounds like it could be a really fun buddy action comedy.

It's interesting to me that Cruise is looked at to be playing the secret service agent and RDJ for the president since I would have thought the opposite. But it sounds like a great premise, and these are two of my favorite movie star/actors. So hell to the yeah!

Strangely I like this premise and can totally see this happening with RDJ as the bumbling out-of-touch ex-president and Tom as the overzealous badass-parody Agent :D

Cruise and Downey are a good match. Both are funny guys, although I have a hard time seeing Cruise in a straight up comedy. That said, this sounds like the kind of role that fits Cruise perfectly, as the character sounds pretty crazy. And of course, Downey does sleazy well.

These two were the best parts about Tropic Thunder ... I cant believe they didnt have a scene together, it would have been amazing watching Les Grossman wreck upon Godly firestorm on Kirk Lazarus.

Honestly, after this, I want Tom Cruise and Christian Bale in a movie together - be it an action crime drama, sci-fi thriller or a comedy. Really want to see Bale do a comedy now.

Why not?

Can't be any worse than Guarding Tess.

Robert Downey Jr. as a charismatic, but morally questionable public figure and Tom Cruise as a workaholic that has trouble balancing work and private life?

I don't buy it.

That premise is pretty uninspired, sounds like elements of both knight and day and due date, and a million other movies, but obviously you're showing up for a potentially amazing comedy pairing

who's who? seems like the safe bet is to cast Cruise as the secret service agent, and Downey as the president. It would be interesting to see it the other way though!
