Tom Cruise announces production on Top Gun: Maverick has begun

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

It’s finally happening, people: After over 30 years of waiting and craving the need for speed, TOP GUN 2 – officially titled TOP GUN: MAVERICK – is flying to us at top speed. To get you excited to head back into the danger zone Tom Cruise has taken to Instagram to formally announce that filming has started on the highly-anticipated, high-flying sequel.

The photo with Cruise, the F-14A Tomcat, the words “Feel the Need”, and the caption "#Day 1" make for a simple image, but it’s effective enough to make you wanna grab your dude pals and play an impromptu, questionably erotic game of volleyball.

The movie has been in the “maybe” pile for years, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Cruise always expressed their desire to make the movie over the years. Everything took a big step forward in the last year or so when it was announced that Joseph Kosinski (OBLIVION, TRON: LEGACY) would direct the movie for a July 12, 2019 release.

As for the plot of the movie, Cruise has said that it will be a competition movie much like the first movie, with reports saying it will address issues of modern warfare, including Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's (Cruise) position on drones. He probably doesn’t like them, as they don’t look as cool flying around with Kenny Loggins playing in the background.

No need to ask, because I know you're all pumped. It's gonna be a long year, but it will all be worth it to see Cruise back in the air flying like a bullet.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK is set for July 12, 2019.
