Tom Cruise delivers the action in the trailer for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Jun. 28, 2011by:

Director Brad Bird was a warlock with the action in THE INCREDIBLES, but we've been wondering how that sorcery would translate to living humans (and whatever state Tom Cruise has ascended to).

Looking at the first trailer for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, there doesn't seem to be much cause for concern. Cruise is in full stuntman mode for the excessive espionage, and he's got a supporting cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Tom Wilkinson and Josh Holloway.

The breakdown: "This is not just another mission. The IMF is shut down when it’s implicated in a global terrorist bombing plot. Ghost Protocol is initiated and Ethan Hunt and his rogue new team must go undercover to clear their organization’s name. No help, no contact, off the grid. You have never seen a mission grittier and more intense than this. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL is in theatres and IMAX December 2011."

Extra Tidbit: What, no Ving Rhames?

Hey guys. It's been a while since I've posted but I figured that I should comment on this films trailer.
Basically, this movie looks phenomenal. It seems to have a Casino Royale level of excellence as far as the balance of non-stop, breathtaking action and a strong emotional core for the audience to really care for the characters. It sucks that some of the cast didn't return but the new additions are very much welcome.
This does bring me to my main point.
Tom Cruise IS Mission Impossible.

Tom Cruise IS Mission Impossible. I've heard some rumblings that the only reason they're introducing Renner's character is so that he can take over for Cruise for any further sequels. May I just cast my vote against this idea. Cruise is one of the most dedicated, versatile, and enjoyable actors in the biz. His screen presence is truly something to behold and he seems to get better every year.
For anyone that's seen Magnolia, remember the "I'm quietly judging you" scene, where the camera holds on Cruise's eyes for almost a whole minute and you can feel all the hurt and anger he is feeling at that moment. That is acting. That is presence. That is Tom Cruise.
He didn't rape anyone like Polanski or even spout out racial slurs like Gibson. I don't really care about Scientology so I never had anything against the guy. Even if I did, it doesn't take away from his acting ability.
He simply isn't getting the right roles of late. Knight and Day was a good idea and Cruise gave a great performance but the story was dull and the direction was flat. Hardly his fault. This looks like the return of the late 90's early 2000's Cruise that I loved. Renner is a great actor but I don't want him to take this AND Bourne AND Hawkeye. He may just run the risk of becoming overexposed like Jude Law did when he first hit the scene.
Let Cruise have Mission Impossible. He is absolutely devoted to the character. he actually did a lot of the dangerous stunts (like climbing the Burj Khalifa) and always seems to have a blast playing the character. I can't really explain it. Like, I'd be fine if they replaced Matt Damon as Bourne, or Christian Bale as Batman, but I wouldn't like to see Hugh Jackman replaced as Wolverine. When someone really loves a character, it shows in their performance and makes the movie that much more enjoyable.
So please, Brad Bird. You've nailed the action. You've chosen real locations, real explosions, and real sets, and used cgi only when necessary. You've got a great cast lined up and what seems to be a great story for a kick ass action film. All I ask is that you don't have Ethan Hunt retire or killed at the end of this movie. Tom Cruise is the Mission Impossible franchise for me. I love the addition of Renner, perhaps as the right hand man or perhaps even as a future villain (Some sort of betrayal perhaps ;) ) but not as an Ethan Hunt replacement.
I love this franchise and have a gut feeling that this will be the best one yet. I hope I'm right.
By the way, in case you guys forgot why Tom Cruise is so awesome, watch this: [link]

BEST TRAILER of 2011

The cinematography looks incredible. Watching camera movement that stems from the mind of an animator fills me with great anticipation.

Mission: In-freakin-credible!

Looking awesome, and I can look over the Eminem song. It's also kinda positively refreshing to see Paramount stick with Tom Cruise, rather than reboot it and replace Cruise with some Twilight schmoe.

Looks fun!

I've always enjoyed the M:I flicks. Just fun action movies with Tom Cruise kicking ass and taking names.

My only gripe with the trailer (and many other trailers) is that shrill noise they play during the money shot. It's like the studio trying to point out, "LOOK HOW FUCKING EXTREME AND AWESOME THIS IS, GUYS!!!"

I wouldn't say this to Brad Bird if I were you; he believes that animated films is simply a platform for different genres, not a genre in itself. Therefore, I think he would be prouder of the statement "what Incredibles did for Superhero movies," since he made a Superhero movie using animation, not an animated movie featuring superheroes.

Looks cool

And is it just me or does Renner look a bit like Daniel Craig as Bond when he's in that tuxedo?

This looks like a lot of fun. Am curious to know how Brad Bird's directing will translate into a live action film, but I'm not worried, especially with with Abrams guiding the film. The third film was a blast and this looks very promising. Like the premise too, as well as Simon Pegg getting an extended role. Good stuff.

Good to see Josh Halloway in this movie. Haven't seen him since Lost. Brad Bird makes a great addition to the franchise. Glad he's going beyond Pixar. He's a fantastic director.

I'm really hoping for a Ving Rhames cameo. I mean, at least something to explain what heppened to him when IMF got scapegoated. Otherwise, this looks like one pretty slick ride. It'll be interesting to watch Simon Pegg play a badass (since I don't really count Hot Fuzz). Maybe he's the new Luther Stickell. A computer nerd graduated to full agent.

where is the villan in it

Trailer is very impressive, but they should have atleast given a glimpse of Anil Kapoor as he is the main male antagonist. I would love to see him as the main villain.

the trailer its self was ...alright. Can't say I was crazy about Eminem rapping over my first look at some of the action; it almost made the theme cue near the end feel awkward. But I'm sure it'll be great.

Looks great.

I realize it's only a trailer, so it's hardly a way to judge anything, but did anyone else feel a bit of a DePalma vibe coming off of this thing? Almost like a mixture of tones from MI1 and MI3? Very cool.

Also, Renner definitely has the Bourne thing going on here.

Watched w/o the sound because I'm at work and completely dug what I was seeing. I have never loved any of the MI movies, enjoyed them yes, but hardly revisisted. Hopefully this will be one worth revisisting... With Cruise, Abrams and Bird I'm predicting (and hoping for) something special.

It would seem Simon Pegg is stepping into the 'techno guru/loyal deputy' role that Ving Rhames played in the first three films. I love Ving, but thats as inspired a line change as you'll see outside the NHL.

Jeremy Renner looks to be at the top of his Steve McQueen cool in this trailer. His presence is pleasingly cryptic and makes me wonder what direction the franchise is headed (wink wink, nudge nudge.)

Yes! Looks bad ass! I think it looks more in the vein of MI3. Also this played before the IMAX screening of TF3 and the moment the trailer transferred to the full 6 story image for IMAX at the end...I popped a cinematic boner! Hear this studios! I would always pay more for (true) IMAX movies than 3D. I find the floor to ceiling and across image much more immersive of an experience than 3D (especially with those damn glasses getting in my way). Even then the size of the screen will always matter

People have pointed out how it seems like a mix of 1 and 3. It almost seems like a mix of ALL 3, imo - and it looks like it works.

Nice

Looks to be nine shades of fun. A bit bummed that Rhames doesn't seem to be back, but if he is in fact in the film, they really went out of their way NOT to include him in the trailer, which makes me think that they may have something special in store for his character. Perhaps just wishful thinking on my part.

Either way, the inclusion of the Eminem song isn't a complete disaster. The last two MI sequels were guilty of trying to appeal to a younger demographic by using songs from the "hot list" of musicians at the time (Metallica for M:I-2 and Kanye West for M:I-3), so I can't say I'm all that surprised at the usage of Em's track (or whatever the kids are listening to these days).

I love the trailer but the whole fade to black gives me fits. Also Tom Wilkinson's accent is really annoying. Why wont they just hire an American actor or let T.W speak normally. He gave the same accent on Batman Begins.
