Tom Cruise has made a commitment to star in Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion

For some reason, I’m really excited about Joseph Kosinski’s OBLIVION. Actually, I know the reason. The artwork for the graphic novel is spectacular. On top of that he directed TRON: LEGACY which wasn’t too shabby.

The journey to get OBLIVION going has been a trying one. There’s been issues with budget and the rating. Disney has had the rights for this for awhile now and were not too sure that they could go for a PG-13. Well Kosinski didn’t give up, so in turn, Disney has decided to give him the PG-13 rating he wanted.

One constant in the equation has been Tom Cruise. While he wasn’t officially on board, his interested in the project remained strong. But today Cruise has committed to star in the film. Cruise will play, “a soldier who’s stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view.”

After filming ends on ROCK OF AGES, Cruise will start on OBLIVION. It’s still possible that the actor will join Guillermo del Toro on PACIFIC RIM at the end of the year, but don’t hold your breath. Cruise is also being eyed for a starring role in writer Dan Fogelman’s (CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE) next project about, “a politician whose pristine reputation is shattered when he gets caught having an affair. With his reputation in tatters, the pol retreats to his hometown to lick his wounds, repair relationships and confront his past.”
