Tom Cruise might head into Oblivion with Tron Legacy director Joe Kosinski

Apr. 12, 2011by: Dave Davis

Universal wasn't willing to pull the trigger on a big-budget horror movie starring Tom Cruise and directed by Guillermo del Toro (that'd be the lamented AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS), but is the studio prepared to bank on the star in a big-budget sci-fi movie from the director of TRON LEGACY?

Joe Kosinski's OBLIVION was expected to be his next project at Disney, but the Mouse let the project drift into the void (Kosinski is apparently still working on another TRON sequel there, even if LEGACY didn't prove to be quite the must-see global box-office smashing "event" they were likely hoping for).

But Universal has snatched up the adaptation of Kosinski's graphic novel (from Radical Publishing), and is now eyeballing the toothy A-list actor to star. Assuming the director can deliver the movie for around $100 million with a PG-13 rating, they want to get cameras rolling by October after Cruise finishes the musical ROCK OF AGES.

The book synopsis: In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.

Extra Tidbit: Much like I AM LEGEND was for Will Smith, seems as though this movie would largely be a post-apocalyptic one-man showcase for Cruise. Something you'd want to see?

Having never seen the original Tron...

I thought Tron: Legacy was nice, solid action movie and was very impressed with Kosinki's directing. I still like Tom Cruise as an actor and this sounds like a really cool original idea that doesn't necessarily need to be R so I'm in.

F*CK YEAH!

I know everybody isn't on the same page when it comes to TRON: LEGACY but I happened to like it and it showed that Kosinski is capable of handling a big budget movie. Plus, I think Tom Cruise is badass! People may have their qualms and opinions about him but he is one hell of an actor. I still think Universal was higher than I was when they denied Del Toro's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS.

an orginal story, holy hell. Paid for in hens teeth and octopus bones!
Seems Cruise is determined to do a big budget horror film, would have preffered At the mountains of Madness though.

An original story adapted from a graphic novel written by the director? Does that ever happen anymore? Make it so.

I'll be honest, right now I just wanna see Cruise acting with people. For all intents and purposes, the man's been out of the spotlight for some time. Maybe M:I-4 will give me my fix. I wanna see him be a team player again though.

From the images of the novel shown this looks neat. Loved Tron and will see anything Kosinski does if it's Sci-Fi

Oblivion sounds promising. I just hope it stays dark and moody. Tron's atmosphere was great. Will Smith was fantastic in I Am Legend but the movie itself should've been dark but instead, drifted (slammed?) into the mainstream.

Tidbit.

Hell yes.

Smith's performance in "I Am Legend", is the best of his career.
