Tom Cruise saddles up for The Magnificent Seven remake

May. 21, 2012by: Niki Stephens

How many projects is Tom Cruise going to lineup? Another good question is-- how many remakes does MGM want to pursue?

As many as they want.

Cruise is attached to the remake of 1960s THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. You know, it's a few parts SEVEN SAMURAI with cowboys and a dash of Steve McQueen. The seven, which consisted of McQueen, Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholz all saddled up, "to protect a small Mexican village from a group of savage bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach)."

Here's the deal on this: Cruise is attached but this thing isn't getting made anytime soon. While MGM has their sights set on it, there is currently no director or writer. Plus they have other remakes to tend to like CARRIE, ROBOCOP, POLTERGEIST, WARGAMES, DEATH WISH, and VALLEY GIRL.

Yep, Remake of a remake

Ridiculous, but to be fair, how many times has Kurosawa's Yojimbo story been told, 5 different films maybe

I really wish they would stop making remakes.

Just take a look at the picture above, no Hollywood star ensemble will come any close, being "magnificent" as these guys did!

I've got nothing against Tom Cruise..

Seriously whats the point of remaking this movie? Louder/bigger guns, more blood-splattering kills, Calvera turns out to be Xenu in disguise? What?!

M7 was enjoyable and it STILL is despite its slight-campiness.

Why can't MGM re-release it with digital-restoration and add new soundtrack.

New Rule

Unless your name is John Sturges, Howard Hawks, Martin Scorsese, John Carpenter, or Sergio Leone...you are hereby banned from remaking any movie rated at or above 7.2 on IMDB.

You see, the original Ocean's 11 was a 'meh' movie. It had a fun concept and an interesting cast, but mostly it was an excuse for the Rat Pack to hang around Vegas a few more weeks. This was an ideal candidate for being redone, with focus and fresh eyes. Mediocre sequels aside, Sodebergh's classic is a prime example

Step. Away. From. The. Classics.

DONT REMAKE THIS Movie

What is Hollywood's problem anyhow? I mean come on...of all the thousands of movies made over the years, they continue to target movies that dont warrant a remake, reboot, or prequel. Hollywood needs to listen to the general public and STOP MESSING WITH CLASSICS! I mean we get to the point where ANY movie could be remade in our life time and to me that shows no respect or honor to the original classic movie.

Don't forget Last Man Standing...a shitty remake of Fistful of Dollars which in turn was a classic remake of Akira Kurosawa's immortal Yojimbo.

Don't mess with perfection!

The Magnificent Seven was a great film for very good reason. If they had a different spin on it, that would be something, but everyone will compare the remake to the Yul Brynner/Steve McQueen film and it will suffer for it.

Wow

Is that a long line of unwarrented, unneeded, legacy butchering, sure to be craptastic series of remakes or what? Well, maybe they thought because those movies released so long ago, people's memories might faltered...Its not as if we have any invention called DVD or other video savable techs to rewatch them, right? (To be fair, I have no idea what is a "Valley Girl" though) Might as well add MS besides those films, looks right at home....

I'll be honest, aside from the nauseating feeling I got from reading all those planned remakes (some of which I'm not entirely against) I don't know that Tom Cruise would be a good fit for a cowboy. Then again, I'm still surprised Yul Brynner of all people made his mark on the western all those years ago. So, while the premise is the stuff of everyone's favorite ensemble action piece (take your pick, there are plenty different spins on the story), I'm not terribly eager on this one. And Tom

Yep, just like that last Assault on 13, and Last House on the Left, and if you give me a moment, I can probably throw another one in the list.

The magnificent er......11

Fuck they already messed up my idea of remaking this with Most of the cast of Ocean's 11 Clooney in the Brynner role Pitt in the McQueen role it would have been epic heck could even see Cheadle as the gambler and Damon in the Bronson role. Oscar all over that bitch plus a manly man movie to boot!!!!

not the worst idea out of hollywood lately

I always thought the story would make a good pirate film. An abused island hire outlaws to help fight other pirates. Not a direct remake but using the great story.
