Tom Cruise's All You Need Is Kill becomes Edge of Tomorrow; reveals first poster!

Jul. 15, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Tom Cruise's next sci-fi action yarn, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL now has a new title: EDGE OF TOMORROW. The newly-titled pic has also been revealed to have a presence at Comic Con this year with the reveal of a new poster highlighting the futuristic battle armor that Cruise wears in the film. Director Doug Liman (MR. AND MRS. SMITH) is at the helm, adapting the famed novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Based on the fiery pic we've already seen of Cruise in this one, my anticiapation is already high, especially after the solid fun that was OBLIVION this year. Cruise is definitely making full use of his "action years" of late and I'm all for it.

In addition to the press release and poster, a new image has also surfaced from the film, showing off Cruise and co-star Emily Blunt geared up and ready to attack something. Take a look below for the pic and the poster! (click to enlarge):

Here's the official press release:

“Edge of Tomorrow” has been announced as the title of the upcoming sci-fi thriller starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, directed by Doug Liman and based on the book All You Need is Kill. The movie, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, is set for release on June 6, 2014, and the first look at footage from the film will be unveiled by the Studio at this year’s International Comic-Con: San Diego on Saturday, July 20. The announcement was made today by Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Kroll stated, “We are extremely pleased to be able to give the Comic-Con audience, who’ve always been so supportive of us, the first peek at footage from ‘Edge of Tomorrow.’ The movie has all of us at the Studio very excited, and we can’t wait to see the reactions of fans who know and love the sci-fi genre so well.”

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

The international cast of “Edge of Tomorrow” also includes Bill Paxton (“Aliens,” HBO’s “Big Love”), Kick Gurry (Australian TV’s “Tangle”), Dragomir Mrsic (“Snabba Cash II”), Charlotte Riley (“World Without End”), Jonas Armstrong (BBC TV’s “Robin Hood”), and Franz Drameh (“Attack the Block”).

Liman directs the film from a screenplay by Dante W. Harper and Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth and Christopher McQuarrie, based on the acclaimed novel All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Erwin Stoff produces, along with Tom Lassally, Jason Hoffs, Gregory Jacobs and Jeffrey Silver. The executive producers are Doug Liman, Dave Bartis, Joby Harold, Hidemi Fukuhara, and Bruce Berman, with Kim Winther and Tim Lewis serving as co-producers.

The behind-the-scenes team includes Academy Award®-winning director of photography Dion Beebe (“Memoirs of a Geisha”), production designer Oliver Scholl (“Jumper,” “Independence Day”), editor James Herbert (“Sherlock Holmes,” “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”), costume designer Kate Hawley (“Pacific Rim”), and Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Nick Davis (“The Dark Knight”).

“Edge of Tomorrow” is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures. Opening domestically on June 6, 2014, the film will be distributed in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow.

Extra Tidbit: Given that Cruise seem to enjoy the action and sci-fi genres of late, who do you think he would be best suited for if he took on a comic book property?

Was I the only one that liked "All You Need is Kill" better? It was so odd I thought it was cool.

I still prefer Matt Damon's exosuit in Elysium than this... uh, design. Damon's suit looks minimalistic as it's never meant to be an armor. Cruise's suit looks bulky and busy from the back yet shows minimal armor on the front. I don't understand the design choice behind it.

Probably because they're not making another Elysium. As crazy as it sounds, the film-makers of this movie could actually be trying to make their own movie...!!

Whoever he wants to be

If he wants to be a 5 foot tall Batman he'd probably give it his all and knock it out of the park. The guy's a weirdo in real life but he just commits 100% and can play anything, but I'd really like to see him do something a little "out there"

yeah I agree. He is one of the few true stars left in the game as actors become secondary to teh types of big budget movies being made, he can still attract an audience by his mere presence alone. But I would like to see him play a bad guy again, he was great as that in Collateral and swarmy in Magnolia

And even better in Tropic Thunder! The Cruise man would kill it as a villain

Let's hope it's just for the teaser poster:
A Cruise movie, without a clear pic of Cruise on the poster usually bombs (tragically simplistic, but true)...

Still think they should have gone with "Groundhog Day 2047" as the title.

Tom Cruise can still bring it in an action movie, so I'm certain he won't disappoint in this as well.

If this is half as good as Oblivion, then we are in for another great Tom Cruise film.

Oblivion was such a terrific film. Easily one of the year's best films. Very much looking forward to another Cruise Sci-Fi film.

Well, this only has the same actor. If it was also made by Kosinsky, who's quickly becoming one of my favorite up and coming directors, we could discuss some similarities. But I do like what I'm seeing from this project as well.

MUCH better title.
All You Need Is Kill sounded like an old Troy Mclure title from The Simpsons

I like Doug Liman, his earlier work more but overall he can be a good director, he directed one of my all time favorite movies, Rounders.

But this poster just screams Iron Man rip off. Which is ironic because years before Marvel started on IM Tom Cruise was attatached to play Stark when the rights were available for purchase.

if your gonna post just to show off your film trivia than at least get your facts right; Doug Liman didn't direct Rounders, that was made by John Dahl.

I approve. "All You Need Is Kill" was grammatically painful.

especially since the suit looks like shit and nothing like the one used in the japanese cover art of the book. it just looks rubbish big, stupid, clunky and square and nothing like a sleek suit of armor.

They lost me when they changed the story from it being about a young, inexperienced recruit to Tom Cruise's Lt Col.

It still sounds like Cruise's character is inexperienced: "an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission."

The new title is a little generic but it does make it sound more accessible than the original. Glad that Cruise seems to be on a sci-fi action roll, Oblivion was quite alright. Hoping to catch a glimpse of the footage.
