Tom Cruise's concern is real in the first on-set pictures from The Mummy

DRACULA UNTOLD marked the first film in Universal's new connected monster movie universe, and now we're see the first from the long-awaited second film, THE MUMMY. The story follows Navy Seal Tyler Colt (Tom Cruise) and his mission in the Iraqi desert to find terrorists hiding out in a bunker. Upon further inspection, their targets turn out to be grave robbers who have all died under mysterious circumstances. Tyler and his team contend with mystical forces as they realize they're actually inside of an ancient tomb. It is here that he's cursed with visions of Ashurbanipal, King of Assyria, AKA The Mummy. How that ties into Sofia Boutella, who's playing the titular character, is unknown, but we do have the first set-pictures featuring Cruise and his co-star Annabelle Wallis.

THE MUMMY is being directed by Alex Kurtzman, who may not have the greatest track record as a writer (STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN), but it may make you feel better to know that the script is by Jon Spaihts (DOCTOR STRANGE). Plus, Tom Cruise is known for taking on some pretty great projects! In any case DRACULA UNTOLD did exactly get anyone excited about Universal's plans for their classic movie monsters, so I'm hoping THE MUMMY fares better.

THE MUMMY is scheduled to be released on June 9, 2017.

I know I haven't seen anything yet, but I kind of hate the idea of the film being set in present day combined with the military angle. There must have been something in the script to draw Cruise aboard, but we'll have to wait and see.

a sigh of relief....

Its about time this guy started to show his age a bit. Makes Scientology a bit less of a mystery. I don't have much interest in the movie. I've never considered mummies very scary or entertaining. I appreciate Tom's work ethic and his fearlessness, but it is so hard to really buy into him because of all the weirdness that surrounds him. He's made some interesting movies as of late.... I'm sure this one is no exception.

Hopefully this turns out to be good. Cruise looks like an everyday man in these pics. we don't see him in roles like that anymore.

"...but it may make you feel better to know that the script is by Jon Spaihts (DOCTOR STRANGE)". Sure because Dr. Strange is a great movie, because it's Marvel, and Marvel is always great ! (at least in this website lol)
Nevermind who direct or write it... we believe in Tom.

He's the same height as Robert Downey Jr. but no one says this about him. Cruise is always the laughing stock. Why?

I'm still worried that this might not be the best choice for Tom Cruise, since this "monsters universe" hasn't been stellar. Still, with him on board, there's still hope.

Like others already said, I hope it will be a fun and scary film. It would be cool if the film takes place in the bunker/tomb for most of the time. I wonder if Universal will set all their monster movies in present day...

I was hoping for a small, dark and claustrophobic horror movie. It seems I will be getting a big star studded action movie.

So far, I'm out

I get what you mean, a real mummy horror film, I'd be totally into that, but I think they'll get a really good balance between scary, fun, and action, especially with Tom Cruise.

I'm starting to really get excited for this, the original Mummy and Mummy returns with Brendan Fraser were super fun to watch, just hope they follow the same type of formula and not trying to go super dark on this one

I wouldn't mind darker than the Stephen Sommers movies, but Cruise is usually pretty good at playing that balance.

I liked Dracula Untold, with the exception of the modern day ending. Seeing this set in modern day, doesn't give me much hope. Modern day might be okay for subsequent sequels, but you really need these monster movies to be set in their proper time periods with regards to the origin stories for them to have any kind of weight or gravitas.

Why? The only reason the original movies were based in a time period from decades ago is because they were made decades ago. Why does a revisionist/rebooted take on the story NEED to take place in the 1920's or 1930's? Why is it bad for it to take place in present day?

That is incorrect.

The Dracula novel by Bram Stoker takes place in the 1800s. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel takes place in the 1800s as well. Bram Stoker also wrote a Mummy novel, but the Imhotep character isn't based on that. Having said that, a Mummy origin picture is best set in the 1920s, simply because that is when the Egyptian Revival occured and Egyptian tombs were being opened by archaeologists and robbers alike right and left. Wolfman and Creature from the black lagoon could be set just about anytime I suppose, but a werewolf origin picture IMO would be best set in France around the time of the werewolf trials. The Creature picture strikes me as the one that could be done in modern day with minimal tinkering, although the paranoia motif of the "other" works very well when set in the Cold War height of the 1950s.

I really enjoyed Dracula Untold. There was some cool ass vampire shit in that movie! Cruise has been killing it with Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, Edge of Tomorrow, etc. AND Sofia Boutella was awesome in Kingsman. Yeah...looking forward to this.

I hope they can somehow make it fun and scary like what they did with the previous ones. Knowing Cruise, he can definitely make it entertaining.
