Tom Hanks charms Emma Thompson in the first trailer for Saving Mr. Banks

Jul. 11, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Tom Hanks is jumping into the shoes of Walt Disney in the new film SAVING MR. BANKS, which examines the "untold story" of the making of MARY POPPINS with the book's author P.L. Travers, played by Emma Thompson. Directed by John Lee Hancock (THE BLIND SIDE), the Hollywood/Disney-themed film looks like an interesting trip into the making of the iconic musical, which looks to have been a bit of a challenge, especially with Travers being so tied to the material. It looks light, engaging, and fun with Hanks and Thompson no doubt bringing a lot of charisma and weight to the cultural icons.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious:

Here's the synopsis:

Author P.L. Travers travels from London to Hollywood as Walt Disney adapts her novel Mary Poppins for the big screen.

I'm surprised by this one. I didn't expect to be as interested in this story, but when it comes to the making of Hollywood films I'm an obvious shoe-in. It's a lot of fun to see the in's and out's of the making of a film, especially one that stands so prominently in the catalogue. It's been awhile since Hanks knocked my socks off, although he was solid in CLOUD ATLAS and looks to bring his usual intensity to CAPTAIN PHILLIPS later this year.

SAVING MR. BANKS starts the production on December 13, 2013.

My excitement is a bit reserved here. These are some of my favorite actors. I love the idea (reminds me a little of the concept behind Finding Neverland). But based on this trailer the movie just looks a bit boring. There just doesn't seem to be a sense that something important at is at stake (even though there is). IDK, it is just the first trailer, and they could have something really great for all I know. I'll be giving it a shot regardless. So which film do ya'll think will Hanks get the

"Poppins, never ever just Mary." Love the way she delivered that line. The tone of this kind of reminds me of the very underrated Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day. Tom Hanks doesn't really look like Disney, but I think he's going to eventually become very beloved in the role.

If you need saving...get Tom Hanks.

He saved Private Ryan. Now it's Mr. Banks. It looks good, if a bit watered down for the family crowd. Also feels like they gave away too much of the movie in that trailer.

I did not like The Blind Side, didn't deserve any of the praise it received. John Lee directed The Alamo before that and that was horrible. So this doesn't look to good to me, and the fact that it's made by Disney means it's going to be very pro Disney. I would much rather see a film like The Avaitor done on Walt and dig into the scandle and conspiracy side of his life.

This is one of the best scripts I've read...

So glad they got Hanks to be Walt Disney. This is gonna be a good one.

I've been cautiously optimistic about this since it was cast. I knew Tom Hanks would be right for the role, but I'm still impressed how they got little things, like the eyes, just right.

I have a severe allergy to schmaltz and Oscar bait, but

that trailer hooked me. I love the way Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson play off each other in their scenes. If the movie's as good as the trailers, then this should be a good flick.

And yes, it's been far too long since Tom Hanks knocked my socks off in a live-action film - but he was brilliant in TOY STORY 3.
