Tom Hanks has been hijacked! Check out the trailer for the Paul Greengrass thriller Captain Phillips

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

The first trailer for CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, the true-life tale of the captain in charge of a hijacked cargo ship, starring Tom Hanks, has arrived. Call it The Bourne Hijacking (or Zero Dark Hijacking), but with a lot less fisticuffs and shootouts. Okay, it really doesn’t have anything to do with the BOURNE films other than the fact that the director of the last two films, Paul Greengrass, is at the helm. Greengrass has jumped into true story hijacking territory before with his excellent and haunting UNITED 93, about the doomed flight taken over by terrorists on September 11th. If CAPTAIN PHILLIPS reaches anywhere near that level of intensity then we’re going to be in for one hell of a nail-biter.

Take a look:

Here’s the synopsis:

The true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

It’s nice to see Hanks back onscreen, who we last saw riding around on a moped with Julia Roberts in the cute, but forgettable LARRY CROWNE and last summer’s epic CLOUD ATLAS. CAPTAIN PHILLIPS feels like the perfect vehicle for the actor, though, who was recently found to be the most trusted man in America in a recent poll. Hanks typically shines in the everyman roles and this looks like a solid place to showcase that.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Keener hits the high seas on October 11, 2013.
