Tom Hanks officially signs on for Kathryn Bigelow's next film

11.30.2010

Kathryn Bigelow's highly anticipated follow-up to THE HURT LOCKER, TRIPLE FRONTIER, has seen a number of A-list stars rumored to be joining the production. From Sean Penn to Johnny Depp to Will Smith, a number of actors have been interested but today, the first actor has officially signed on. Coming Soon is reporting that Tom Hanks will star in the film, set to begin production in March.

Producer Charles Roven told the site that Hanks was cast in the film and any of those previously mentioned actors could still be in consideration as he added that they're still working on casting other major roles in the ensemble film.

While the exact plot is unclear, it's expected to be a TRAFFIC-style tale of interweaving plotlines revolving around the tri-border area of Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil, which is home to organized crime, terrorists and other assorted nogoodniks.

While there were some rumors that FRONTIER would be retitled to SLEEPING DOGS, Roven specifically referred to the film by its original (and better) title. Hanks is currently finishing up editing his latest directorial effort, the upcoming comedy LARRY CROWNE with Julia Roberts.

Extra Tidbit: Bigelow directed a pilot TV movie for the HBO series "A Miraculous Year" while prepping FRONTIER.

Who cares about Hurt Locker? She directed Strange Days, Near Dark, and Point Break. That's good enough for me. I'm definitely excited.

No Thanks Hanks

Sean Penn and Tom Hanks? Is this going to be another liberal douchebag film? Those are always big sellers, no?

They had better land Will Smith and his box office draw...

Excited for this. "The Hurt Locker" was a flawless movie and deserved every award it won (much better than Avatar).

With cast already rumored to star and now is, I can't wait to see what other A-List stars sign on next; hopefully Jeremy Renner is on the radar.

As Paul Mooney would say, Tom Hanks is also up for the lead role in "The Last Nigga on Earth"

I thought "The Hurt Locker" kicked muy ass, with its locations, photography, and editing (sure, it was a series of vignettes, but they worked). I'll confess I never would've dreamed Kathryn Bigelow would be called an award-winning director (her filmography just didn't reflect that quality of filmmaking, no matter how much ass "Near Dark" and "Point Break" kicked). However, this sounds like an intriguing subject. And really, whenever a director who isn't Steven Spielberg or Ron Howard can get

Is it cool to not like her now or something? I really enjoyed Hurt Locker, and I am looking forward to what she does next. More so than say, another 3d blue people movie from her ex-husband.

Can someone please explain to me again what was so good about The Hurt Locker? It was an alright movie, but certainly not best picture, and DEFINITELY not Best Director. Now everyone who's anyone is dying to get on her next movie?
