Tom Hanks to get captured by pirates in A Captain's Duty

03.15.2011

Sony Pictures has Tom Hanks attached to play the lead in A CAPTAIN'S DUTY.

Will he be a shrimpin' boat Captain? No, but he's playing Captain Richard Phillips. What is this man's story and what sort of ship does he helm? The true story follows, "the leader of the cargo ship Maersk Alabama who gave himself up as a hostage to Somali pirates to keep his crew from having to leave the ship with them. After three days alone with the armed pirates in a small lifeboat, Phillips was saved by Navy SEALs who staged a raid that left three captors dead and another in custody. Shortly after Phillips got a hero's homecoming and signed with CAA to make a book deal, Sony Pictures optioned A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, Phillips' memoir of the harrowing ordeal."

Billy Ray (SHATTERED GLASS, THE HUNGER GAMES) recently turned in a draft of the script adapted from the book which was published last year. The producing team for THE SOCIAL NETWORK consisting of Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti and Kevin Spacey are on board for the film as well.

I was going to say Saving Private Ryan but "Can Ispeak To Ken" reminded me about Road To Perdition. Honestly, both fantastic films. RtP is quite underrated in my humble opinion.

Brilliance!

Extra Tidbit: It's a tie between The Green Mile and Road to Perdition. Saving Private Ryan and Toy Story 3 are up there though.
And, I gotta say it: I loved The Ladykillers remake. Absolute quirky goodness, and Tom Hanks gleefully playing the bad guy.

Tidbit's a toughy. I'll go for Phili for his performance. Call me crazy, but my favorite comedic performance is in League of Their Own. He plays it straight for most of The Burbs, which is a classic.

Sounds good, sign me up. Be cool if Billy Ray directed as well. I can hear the porn spoof already, "A Captian's Booty".
Big, Saving Private Ryan, and Bachelor Party, of course.

"Will he be a shrimpin' boat Captain?".... lmao, some of you staff writers are nuts.

Tidbit: Road To Perdition (Bond plays a bad guy), Forrest Gump, Cast Away.. there's too many.

The entire article could have just consisted of the words "Tom Hanks vs. Pirates" and I still would've been in like Flint.

Serious Hanks: Philadelphia
Funny Hanks: Volunteers

Mazes & Monsters. It was about time someone made a film to raise awareness of D&D addiction.

I like Forrest Gump of course, and Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile and Cast Away. Also, not that it's his best work, but I'm one of those who thought he did a good job in the Robert Langdon films.

Want to see him sport that captain's beard on the book cover. Does he ever have facial hair in any movies except Cast Away?

Totally agree! Tom Hanks with a man's goatee like that would be awesome.
