Tom Hardy is contracted for three Mad Max sequels based on Fury Road results

04.02.2015

Tom Hardy is a great actor. The guy is a chameleon and has done everything from play the craziest inmate in England (BRONSON) to a Batman villain (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) and beyond. But, this summer's MAD MAX: FURY ROAD represents the first major franchise lead role for the actor and it looks spectacular. Each trailer we have seen has topped the previous one and is renewing interest in the decades old franchise that has always been associated with star Mel Gibson. If the massive MAD MAX: FURY ROAD can deliver at the box office, the series could go forward with Tom Hardy's name on our minds before Gibson.

In an interview with Esquire UK, Hardy discussed the role.

As for the pressure, Hardy says it’s enormous. “I’ve never been more excited and out of my comfort zone.” He’s seen the film, and says it’s “fucking unbelievable”. He’s attached to a further three Mad Max films, though as he says, “Everything’s based on figures and how things are perceived. Inevitably it’s a business.”

That's right, three more sequels. Granted, an R-rated movie has to make a pretty penny at the box office to warrant a sequel. There is also the fact that the production ran long and exceeded the $100 million budget significantly. Director George Miller is also not known for being prolific with his films having helmed ten movies in 35 years. But, Warner Bros is banking on MAD MAX: FURY ROAD to be more than a one-trick pony, so there is hope that those sequels could come to fruition.

What is more exciting is Hardy's reaction to the film. Not one to quibble as he has questioned the quality of some of his prior films like THIS IS WAR, Hardy seems to be very excited about how good MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is going to be. I just hope he is right.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD opens on the lovely date of May 15th.

Can't Wait!!

Absolutely can't wait for this film! Wasn't keen on the idea of a Mad Max reboot but so far it looks like It should be a hell of a ride! This is my must see this summer film even more than Age of Ultron.

I love Tom but it's going to be REALLY hard for MM to get it's money back with an R. Just ask Dredd (granted MM has much better trailers but still it's a dystopian action flick about a forgotten brand name). And I don't like such comments for serious R action films because now I know that Max survives Fury Road and it sucks some of the tension out of the film.

randomness.

The success of this movie is such a random number. People might go wild for it, people might ignore it in drives. It might be just too weird for the masses.

So it makes sense. Plan for success, but admit it's still an unknown quantity.

Why did they replace Hardy with Zack Braff?
Other than that, I am pretty excited for whats to come.

Can we just get to see and hopefully enjoy Fury Road first then reserve judgement before another one or three take place?

Hmmm

I think hardy is a great actor and one film not yet mentioned was his turn in Inception that I thought was brilliant! I like Hardy but I worry looking at the trailer and the comments if this is another Dredd where it's just come too late for the audiences of today. I for one have never seen MM and I'm not sure if I would want to see this - it feel like a very specific kind of genre film that I wonder has it lost its audience now ....

Weird comment. Not having seen the original films, why would you feel you have a valid opinion on the potential of Fury Road? Have you scene the trailers? Nuff said.

@1428elmstreet - I'm not saying it doesn't have potential the trailers are great - but my point is look at the length of time that has past since Gibson last did this film. It has a very specific look and feel and like Dredd all the fan boys love it but whether it will get mainstream box office dollars is my question. Freed had great trailers and a great review and Hardy and Urban are very similar in terms of where their careers were prior to taking a solo gig - personally I hope it does do

Wait a second?!

I thought I read somewhere that Miller filmed enough footage for two to three movies or something like that?! I swear I read somewhere that he went over budget to film another film back to back. I have to find that article cause I know I'm not misremembering anything.

All I can find is the "back to back" articles. But I know I read somewhere that they essentially shot enough footage and had to do like 2 different sets of reshoots that they had like 3 movies in the can.

Interesting that they're going for 4 films instead of a trilogy. But based on the visuals and the buzz for Fury Road, I'm already on board with more Mad Max.

I'm sorry, but that's over-doing it. Just make it a trilogy.

Oh, hell yes. Makes even more excited for Mad Max: Fury Road (if that was even possible at this point).
