Tom Hardy lets loose about Mad Max: Fury Road

06.28.2010

I keep forgetting that Tom Hardy is in INCEPTION, as there are almost too many good actors to keep track of in that movie, but the man does have a supporting role and was at a press junket recently talking about his performance there, and about his other upcoming projects, the most notable of which is obviously MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.

He dropped a surprisingly large amount of info about the film, how it’s going to be shot and just what he’s doing to prepare to take on the iconic character.

It's a relaunch and revisit to the world, an entire restructuring. That's not to say that it's not picking up or leaving off from the Mad Max you know already, but it's a nice re-take on the entire world using the same character, depositing him in the same world, but bringing him up to date by 30 years. Obviously Mel would've been perfect for it but, for some reason, he's not doing it and I am. You can expect the same amount of grit and rawness and authenticity [to my] performance, I hope to deliver. But that's really the crux of me and George to deliver that and all the other actors as the other characters.

But also we have the new world afforded to filmmakers today with all the opportunities and facilities and technical abilities. I think the boys that did Lord of the Rings are involved and all that kind of stuff as well. CGI is not going to be — I think it's going to be much more like Chris [Nolan], how he deals with action - these things are going to be really there. Big rigs, big explosions, big car crashes, big violence, you know. It's going to actually happen as opposed to doing a 2D turned to 3D screen. It's going to be an adventure, let's put it that way. We're shooting for a year…"

Hardy says he starting stunt training for the film shortly, and for the last time, yes, it’s confirmed as a go. It’s not a matter of if, but when the movie happens now. Were people really starting to doubt that just because Teresa Palmer just left the film?

As for Hardy himself, he has a very specific idea of how he wants his Max to look and feel, and has quite the analogy to describe his vision.

"Imagine a hungry wolf. Or like when you put a cat in the bath. You grab a cat by the throat and stuff it under the fucking water. You know what it looks like? That's what I'm going to look like. But like a puma. Very hungry and very dangerous. It's imperative. This is the kind of guy who's not well. So I have to create that reality."

Out of all the Hollywood franchises being rebooted today, I have to say I’m actually pretty excited for this one. It’s a got a decent budget ($100M) a talented, dedicated lead, and a universe that is ripe for exploration and expansion. Done right, this might be a pretty worthwhile ride.

Extra Tidbit: I still have yet to watch BEYOND THUNDERDOME. How does it compare to the first two?

I loved Mad Max and The Road Warrior...but Beyond Thunderdome didn't feel right. I mean, it wasn't a bad movie, but it just didn't feel like it fit with the series. Half the movie feel like it's geared toward kids.

Thunderdome lost its Car Nut angle. Too few car chases, which I really hope Fury Road remedies.

Tom Hardy

I like Tom Hardy, and that alone is reason enough for me to have faith in this project.

I'll wait and see the trailer and stills from the movie. As for extra tidbit, Beyond Thunderdome is like two different stories roll into one for me. The Road Warrior is the best of the trilogy.

I have faith in George Miller.

He doesn't do quick lame crap.

The movie might be great, or it might be a mess, but it will be something interesting to see.

I take all of the shit these guys say in pre-production for garbage. Remember Spielberg and Lucas talking about Indy IV? They say these things to pump up the fans but when they're in the middle of shooting it they take the quick and easy CGI way. I'll believe it when I fucking see it.

It's not going to surpass The Road Warrior, so why bother.

I'm not normally a huge fan of remakes, but I feel like this one could really be done right. I'm giving it a chance because Gibson IS REALLY OLD compared to escape from New York where I feel like Russel could still knock it out the box.

I'm interested for now

This could be good, if it's everything Hardy is saying it will be.

Go for it T.Hardy, prove everyone wrong. I think he has the ability to do it.
I remember when Daniel Craig was picked to replace Pierce Bronsan in the Bond movies. So many people on this website flipped out over it and said he was a terrible choice. I remember reading post a year later once "Casino Royale" was released and tearing it up in theaters. All the haters were now lovers. It is possible that this could happen again.

I think

Tom Hardy is great!, And I have faith in Miller, It is a lil of a concern bringing back Max, Now in a CGI, 3D crazed Hollywood world. But Hopefuly Miller will keep true to his original creation,...Lets hope

Never

I don't like that I always have to comment on the Mad Max columns in a negative way, but I really don't want this to work. I want this to fail. I know it won't fail, but I want it to.

I don't like what Hardy said. I understand why he said it and he's basically looking to inspire new fans and reassure old fans but this particular fan (me) just won't buy it.

Puma.

nice

I think Beyond Thunderdome is awesome. No drop off for me.

As far as the reboot - I'm pretty excited for it. I would've preferred they just drew up a new set of characters...I mean it is an entire world...no reason to re-invent Mad Max. Why not just make a new anti-hero. You could still have some of the same locations and stuff. They could even drop references to the prior events, which would be fun. But I'll settle for a reboot. It will probably kick all sorts of ass.

I could care less. They're going to pump this vein full of CGI sugar, when the brilliance of the original films were the down to earth scrap and grime quality they brought to screen. No thanks.

Awsome. Hardy is one of the only actors who could possibly do as good as Mel in this role.

I love the Mad Max films and I'm pretty excited for this one.

Beyond Thunderdome is simply ok but not nearly as good as Mad Max or The Road Warrior. For me, Thunderdome drops off in quality in the 2nd half. I'm sure if anyone else has seen it, you know what I mean...
