Tony Jaa kicks it with RZA in first trailer for The Protector 2

Feb. 25, 2014by: Paul Shirey

Reuniting with his ONG-BAK and THE PROTECTOR director, Prachya Pinkaew, martial arts star Tony Jaa jumps back into sequel territory with THE PROTECTOR 2, a follow-up to the 2005 hit, also known as TOM YUM GOONG. The first film featured Jaa as a rural fighter named Pham who travels to the city in order to retrieve his prized elephant from some nasty villains. The sequel puts Pham back in the city, but he's no longer trying to save an elephant as he's on the run for suspected murder and ends up on a top secret mission that leads to an underground fighting ring. Duh. Of course.

Take a look:

Here's the synopsis:

Boss Suchart is the owner of an elephant camp. When he is murdered, all evidence points to Kham (Tony Jaa), who was seen with the victim before he died. Kham is forced to run as the police launch a pursuit. Meanwhile, the twin nieces of Boss Suchart (Jija Yanin Wismitanan and Teerada Kittisiriprasert) are out for revenge. But luck is on Kham's side when he runs into Sergeant Mark (Mum Jokmok), an agent sent to Thailand on a secret mission. In another twist, Kham is drawn into an underground fighting ring run by LC (RZA), a crime lord who's obsessed with collecting top-class martial artists. LC's fighters are branded by numbers, such as the lethal, beautiful Twenty (Ratha Pho-ngam) and the diabolical No. 2 (Marrese Crump). These fighters are ordered to capture Kham for a special mission.

I dig Tony Jaa. He's a fun martial artist to watch and has a lot of charisma doing what he does. I loved the first THE PROTECTOR and this looks like a fine, cheesy time as well. The story is whatever, but I'm not really into it for that. I just want to see Tony Jaa jump around and use his knees and elbows in creative ways. It looks like this will fill that order.

THE PROTECTOR 2 hits iTunes on March 27, 2014 and will have a limited theaterical run on May 9, 2014.

kick ass fun

Saw this movie on a film festival and liked it alot, the special effects and the 3D are very, very cheap but the fights are awesome. The only thing i don't understand is why RZA is in it...he can't act and can't fight...why do people cast him? Hope Tony Jaa will make more of this kind of movies because Ong Bak 2 and 3 are teribble...and I hope his role in fast and furious 7 will be his breakthrough in hollywood! Also, the girl from the movie "Chocolat" [link] is awesome!!!

Yeah, RZA is horrible! Every time he´s on the screen he drags the movie down like a block of cement!

If you take the movie just by itself, it's an ok film. But compared to the first one.....it's a completely and total letdown.

Saw it. Entertaining but completely silly. All the fight scenes have a really over the top, almost stunt show like quality to them and use a lot more CGI than Jaa's earlier movies but I think they're still impressive. RZA is hilarious. The clashes in this flick are as inventive and entertaining as they are pretty ridiculous, and it is in fact because they are cheesy in that exaggerated 80s kung fu flick tradition that the movie is ultimately enjoyable.

TERRIBLE flick

Boring and lame fight scenes, which is its biggest sin.
RZA should never EVER try to act. Ever again.
I was already lost by the halfway point, but when they were fighting on electrified subway tracks, with lightsaber sounds as they connected... Wow, that really elevated it to a new level of crap.

CGI replaces the amazing stunts and 'wow' factor

I was quite disappointed with this one. the reasons why the protector and the first ong bak captured my attention was the fact that the stunt scenes were choreograph and used some practical effects... the protector 2 used too much cgi to enhance the scenes - maybe because it was made with '3D film' in mind... but it took away the charm that was in the earlier films.

Both Ong Bak and the first protector films had standout 'wow' scenes, whether it was the chase scene through the streets of bangkok and tong jaa jumps through a role of barb wire, or the one-shot scen of tony jaa going up a flight of stairs and battling anyone who gets in his way. The protector 2 had... twins throwing computer-generated electrical plugs as weapons(??). Honestly, I can't remember any stand out stunt scene.

(SPOILERS)

As for the story, there could have been potential for a good story that was hinted at in the sub-plots that was never examined (the tattoo rankings of an underground street fighting culture).. I was more interested in that than what became the muddy main story.

If you want good asian martial scenes (and 'slightly' stronger story), seek out the indonesian films 'Merantau' and 'The Raid'...

RZA Booooo

Never heard of this movie, but the words Featuring RZA are enough for me to never ever, ever watch it. I have watched him in two movies Iron Fists and GI Joe and he ruined both. How does he even get jobs, who can seriously watch his performance and say yah that was great. He has to have some incriminating video because that's the only way he is getting work.
