Tony Scott wants to direct Top Gun 2

10.25.2010by:

A couple of weeks ago, news came flying in that Paramount Pictures was suddenly revitalized in their desire to bring TOP GUN 2 to the big screen. Today, original TOP GUN director Tony Scott (UNSTOPPABLE) chimes in, saying he's game to take the reins of the potential sequel.

In speaking with website HitFix, Scott revealed that his plan would be for the film to focus on the end of the era of fighter pilots:

"I'm not waiting for a script. I'm going to do my homework. I'm going down to I think it's Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it's a whole different world now," Scott says. "These computer geeks -- these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night."

Scott added, "This world fascinated me, because it's so different from what it was originally. But, I don't want to do a remake. I don't want to do a reinvention. I want to do a new movie."

That's an interesting angle to approach this. But should all the necessary elements come together for a TOP GUN sequel (would that necessarily include Tom Cruise?), it probably wouldn't be for a few years. Scott says that this wouldn't be his next film but possibly the one immediately after.

Tony Scott's latest, UNSTOPPABLE, opens everywhere on November 12th.
Extra Tidbit: A little WAR GAMES in there, huh?

yea I would rather have actual people flying planes too. The original was mostly about that. I'll keep my hopes up that Tony does it right, and that Cruise and Val come back!

Doesn't sound cool at all. Geeks flying drones as opposed to actual fighter pilots. lol

This is a terrible idea. Especially if Tom Cruise isn't in it! But If they had Tom I would definitely see it.

fat-womanizer, you really think that unless it's an anti-war movie it will be just an advertisement for the Air Force? I doubt that's the objective from anyone involved in this movie.

Yes I think the Military has a lot of Power over the script in this sort of movies, because they are providing most of the material. If you google a bit you'll find a lot about the influence of the military in Hollywood...

I really do think Tony Scott could make an exciting Top Gun sequel. Cruise and Kilmer would have to be in it. But a bigger question remains: How do you top that iconic song by Kenny Loggins? Sadly, I can already hear the hip-hop remix of "Danger Zone" blasting at the end of the credits...

So is Cruise going to be sitting at a computer, holding a joystick and flying a drone? If not, there really isn't any reason to call it Top Gun 2.

Even without Tom, military geeks flying computer screens doesn't sound like a good match for Tony Scott.

I would watch it as an anti-war movie.
But which director would have the balls to do that?
Otherwise it's just another advertisement for the airforce...

I don't really want this movie but if Tom isn't in it, it's instant failure.

It would be like UHF 2 without Weird Al.

Top Gun is one of my favorite movies and having the original director return for the sequel is a step in the right direction. To make this awesome, Cruise AND Kilmer both have to return to reprise their roles.

So can't wait for any new Tony movie. And hopefully he will return sooner than later to his "new" Domino style forever.
He's the only visual artist in Hollywood.

We need a Top Gun 2? No. But I guess there has to be more homoeroticism in action movies somehow.
