Total Recall remake gets its ass to Toronto; Avengers assemble in New Mexico

Dec. 24, 2010by:

You're about to get Paul Verhoeven's and Philip K. Dick's story TOTAL RECALL remade for you wholesale, and it will happen up in Toronto. According to The Star, the production will begin shooting in March at Ontario's Pinewood studio, reportedly with a whopping budget of $200 million (unknown if that's Canadian or US -- both pretty close in value at the moment, yeah?).

Columbia has Len Wiseman (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, UNDERWORLD) heading up the head trip, and last we heard, Colin Farrell was approached to star. The original movie featured Arnold Schwarzenegger as an average Joe/Quaid/Hauser whose implanted memory "vacation" uncorks his real personality as a secret agent. So he gets his ass to Mars and meets mutant prostitutes, an irritating cabbie, an oppressed society and a guy with a greasy puppet in his chest, and then he slaughters almost everyone in sight and/or saves the planet.

Meanwhile, as Mars goes north to Canada, Marvel's AVENGERS will be assembling in a more arid climate. According to Yahoo, that massive production will move to Albuquerque, New Mexico from April to September.

Joss Whedon's superhero extravaganza, which rounds up Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Nick Fury and Hawkeye to do battle with question mark, is set for release May 4, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: Ironically, Toronto native David Cronenberg was adapting Dick's tale for the screen in a more faithful manner before it became the grand-scale, hyperviolent, triple-breasted adventure of Verhoeven's vision.

$200M budget = PG-13. Guaranteed. Forget three titties on a woman, we'll be lucky to see one.

Be lucky to have a busty woman, completely dressed and hidden behind a huge sweater in the background, for 200 million.

I wonder if the Total Recall remake will be saturated with pretentious shaky-cam work, and uber-pretentious high-contrast shadows that make every single object look like poorly lit CGI. Remember the 80s and 90s when action movies were perfectly exciting and engaging without all the pretentious lighting and camera work?

Im not sure I understand how shaky-cam work could ever be considered pretentious. You know the meaning of that word, right ?

I think he's got it right, trying to impress us, the audience, by trying to shove poor camera work down out throats. Pretending to have great skill but the shoddy camera work is indicative of no skill. etc. etc. etc.

WHY?

Total Recall shouldnt be remade..come on, who thought this was a good idea? I am surprised they couldnt come up with something more important....if you are going to remake something...dont do an Arnold Classic.

AAAAARRRRGGGGGGG!!!!

Not really digging who they have attached to the Total Recall remake. Why don't they just make a sequel instead of rehashing the classic? Meh.

This is wrong. However if they are to do this, a cameo with Arnold is mandatory.

I'm not against a Total Recall remake. I love the movie so much, so I wouldn't mind seeing it all over again like it was my first time watching it. But I think they can do way better than Colin Farrell. I'm totally against this guy starring as Quaid. He has the same facial expression in all of his movies. They can get someone better.

Robot Fat Lady Head Maker: Ok, I can only program the head to say two things, what do you want them to say?"

Hauser: I want my mask to say 'Two Weeks', and 'Get Ready For a Surprise'."

Maker: Are you sure? How about 'Yes' and 'No', or 'Two Weeks' and 'Yes', or 'Two Weeks' and 'No'?

Hauser: No, I can't imagine needing the mask to say "Yes' or "No", I think I'd rather it say 'Two Weeks' and 'Get Ready for a Surprise', also, I'd like to have a bomb built inside of it that explodes

Maker: You do realize that customs is probably gonna ask you several yes or no questions right?

Hauser: Look, I want the talking fat lady head to say the two phrases that I picked out! I don't foresee any problems with 'Two Weeks, and Get Ready for a Surprise'! Now do it the way I want it, or I'm gonna ram my fist into your stomach, and break your goddamn spine!!

A huge mistake IMO. It's only 20 years old.

The budget gives me some hope, but c'mon now this is beyond absurd. Ran out of original ideas I guess. BOOOOO!!!!

Music

They should get Clint Mansell to do the score. His former band Pop Will Eat Itself did a song called Get The Girl, Kill The Baddies which had many Total Recall references.

I've seen Totall Recall a few days ago and it's just as good as ever!

The story, the visuals, the gore, Arnold, Sharon, Michael Ironside, Verhoven, Goldsmith... These made the original a good film. The remake has none of them!

Maybe okay

This could be a good venture so long as they don't try to recreate the Verhoven film. Verhoven was way ahead of his time in the way he shot films. Remember the loud, obnoxious way the T.V. personalities talked? Nancy Grace wasn't even thought of yet, but here we are today.

I thought the original Total Recall captured the tone of Philip K. Dick pretty well. That, coupled with the fact that it's one of the 90's best action films, leaves little reason for a remake. But I'm interested if they're going for an even more faithful adaptation of the story. And if they snag Mr. Farrell for the role. As for Avengers, this is something I've been waiting for since I was a kid. I get goosebumps just reading about shooting schedules.

Reboot or Adaptation?

If they intend to remake Total Recall, that's a waste of time and incredibly disappointing. If they want to more faithfully adapt We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, I'm all for it!

Why the hell would you wanna reboot Total Recall?! The original is just fine. Plus it had a kickass director

Remake a film only when the original had good concept but the whole movie turned out bad! Not Great!

I like Colin Farrell as an actor, and "The Way Back" looks really good. I just don't think I really like the idea of him being the lead in Total Recall. I'd like to see someone who is a closer match to Arnold!

The original Total Recall was the most expensive movie ever made when it was released. Really shouldn't surprise us that a remake would be pretty expensive too.

This is a movie website so that's probably why it's mentioned. As far as "who cares at the end of the day" I can tell you, myself, and many others do. The reason why is because I ask more out of artists and studios. I want them to be more original with any story, remake or not. It's insulting to me as a person and to my intelligence.

In the entire history of Hollywood remakes have been common,in the case of the 30s and 40s sometimes a film would be remade after a couple of years I can't see the point in moaning about a practice that goes back to the beginning of film.
