Live Free or Die Hard scribe Mark Bomback will rewrite The Wolverine script

4 years agoby:

For some unknown reason, Mark Bomback (TOTAL RECALL, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD) will be rewriting Christopher McQuarrie's script for THE WOLVERINE. Apparently McQuarrie's script was great but Fox decided to bring another scribe in to do some "retooling".

James Mangold (WALK THE LINE) is still helming the next adventure in the Wolverine saga. Hugh Jackson is probably somewhere drinking milk and doing push-ups.

Variety offered up a synopsis: "Wolverine suffering from amnesia and searching for answers about his past in the Japanese criminal underworld where he finds both love and tragedy." They also mention that the cast will mainly consist of Japanese and Japanese-American actors, "except for a newly-expanded character named Viper, who's the Caucasian secretary for Japan's Minister of Justice." Viper was a hot chick with green hair who employed the Silver Samurai as her personal bodyguard. All of this after she decided to start a terrorist organization.

Production will hopefully start next year with locations in Tokyo and Vancouver.

Okay so here's what happened. The studio met with McQuarrie and told him, "Okay, your script is good. It's really good. But... we think it might go over the heads of most of our audience, so... we're going to have someone come in to make it a bit simpler. That way, we can get enough people in the seats. We won't change much. We'll just shorten up the character development and amp up the action a bit. Oh... and I almost forgot to tell you... that bloody action scene you included, we're going to

No!!!

Seems like Fox is determined to screw this movie up. The lost of Aronofsky still stings. It would've been so awesome. Damn it!

Why bother making this at all??

The first one was too horrible to sit through again, so why make a sequel? And if you are going to reboot the character/franchise, get another actor to take over and do it right this time.

Since they pushed back production, why sit on your hands? Give the script a pass with a "script doctor" and see what happens! They still have the original on file. This couldn't hurt, I don't see what all the fanboy bitching is about. Joss Whedon does this all the time and did it on Captain America. Not much gets changed but some points may be enhanced. I love the idea.

I have faith in Mangold, but by the time this movie gets its shit together, Aronofsky is going to walk into Fox and be like, "He guys! I'm back!"

Fox likes dick-slapping their movies.

Why, did Christopher McQuarrie's script have too much quality for Fox's tastes?

This movie has been a rollar coaster of emotions, ranging from super excited to now totally disinterested. I don't even think I will bother going to see this. Fox probably felt that Mcquarie's script had too much character development and not enough cars being launched at helicopters. My wish at this point is that they scrap the wolverine franchise and figure out a way to work hugh jackman into the first class franchise. So disappointing

I don't know why everyone immediately jumps to negative conclusions. Almost every movie gets rewritten before, and even sometimes during production. Most of Raiders of the Lost Ark was rewritten while shooting the movie. Would I have liked to see Aronofsky's version? Sure, but James Mangold is a solid Director with a good body of work under his belt. Copland and 3:10 to Yuma are both underrated gems IMO. Every Director likes to make a project their own when they take over a film, and I trust in

If anything there probably just doing a pass to try and tie it in more with FIRST CLASS since the first draft was written before that movie came out.

Just saw Copland for the first time a few years ago and was blown away by it. But I'm not sure if the same guy can make a good Wolverine movie..

They say the script is great, but they still want to re-write some of it. I just don't understand the thinking behind FOX and never will.

Tsunami?

This may have something to do with the Tsunami damage to Japan, as alot of the locations scouted for the film are no longer available. Also, Fox could have requested the rewrites to bring the film into closer continuity with X-Men: First Class. Jackman really cares for the character and with the success of First Class the "X" film universe may be back on the right track.

wow seriously

normally i'm a guy to say hey give it a chance and even i think this is a bad idea you just turned what coulda been a very interesting film into maybe a decent movie. hollywood needs to stop hiring people who have no previous love for the characters, and hire fans they make the best comic movies, ironman anyone.

My interest for this movie went out the door with Arnonofsky, and now they're changing a script that supposedly was 'great'. Just name it Wolverine 2 cause it's gonna suck just as bad as the first

Aronofsky didn't start it, he didn't write the script at all. He saw the script and loved it and began some pre-production work, but aside from that he really didn't have much anything to do with the script

I never said he had anything to do with the script, I said that we're getting less and less of the vision Aronofsky had for this final product. He loved the script, approved it, and had a vision.. now that vision is gone, as well as the script he loved.

So, in short, Aronofsky is now gone, and the script that he approved and dug the fuck out of is being rewritten.

but it was never his vision, it always was and is Jackman's vision. Of course with each director comes a new style, but the main vision of the film remains intact and while a lot of the time that vision is created by the director in the beginning, in this case Aronofsky wasn't there to create it because Jackman and co already had it - Aronofsky was just going to put his spin on it, just as Mangold will do now. The vision remains intact, and I wouldn't take that 'rewritten' part too heavily like
