Toy Story 3 now the highest grossing animated movie of all time

08.13.2010

It's already many people's favorite film of the year so far (mine as well, sorry INCEPTION), but now TOY STORY 3 is in the history books too.

According to a press release, the film has just made $920 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing animated movie of all time, $400M of that coming from the US box office alone.

What did it beat out? Here’s the old ranking order.

1. Shrek 2 - $919M

2. Finding Nemo - $867M

3. Shrek the Third - $798M

4. The Lion King - $783M

5. The Incredibles - $631M

Yeah, yeah, I’m sure if you adjust for inflation, LION KING and like SNOW WHITE beat it out, but whatever, I’m counting it, and I’m glad that some shitty SHREK sequel is no longer on top.

Couldn’t AVATAR technically be considered an animated movie with all that CGI? Jokes!

Extra Tidbit: I'm glad to see the INCREDIBLES that high up on the list. How that hasn't gotten a sequel yet, I don't know.

Okay ice age dawn of the dinosaurs actually made $886 million worldwide (check boxofficemojo.com) so that just proves your numbers are skewed, paul

and another thing: where's ice age 3 on this list? i'm pretty sure it made more than shrek 3. do your research, man. please don't tell me this site uses it's own made-up figures and lists to make a biased point. that's no fun

Shrek 2: 2004: No 3D: Lower ticket prices
Toy S.3: 2010: 3D: Higher ticket prices: more countries: Disney machine

Domestic:
Shrek 2: $441 million
Toy S.3: $400 million (and at the end of its theatrical run)

There can u understand that?

Oh, f**k off, loser. Toy Story 3 stomped Shrek 2. Get over it!

WTF Tassi?!

I love how international box office is suddenly such a huge part of the equation. You don't even break down the domestic numbers. Deplorable and highly biased...considering you have a range of fans on here. Shrek 2 has made $441 million dollars in the United States and Canada (the two countries whose box office #s are always used for "domestic" figures) and Toy Story 3 is a long way off from that and will not be the #1 animated movies of all time, as it has been described for the past 75

Sorry, guys. How bout some perspective, ya know?

Give it a rest, moron. Even if Toy Story 3 didn't become the highest grossing animated movie of all time (which it DID), who cares? It's still way better than the overrated Shrek cash-cow franchise!

It was a great way to end the series that started it all.

Shrek 2 is probably the best Shrek, but still does not compare to Toy Story. Toy Story started it all, and the first 2 were released before the big computer animation boom since 2001(notice all the other computer ones on the list have come out since 2003), so it's nice that the 3rd one has done this, and will keep going.

Good for Pixar. They definitely deserve to be the ranking champions of animation. And Toy Story deserved to be the franchise that brought them there.

Hey now, "Shrek 2" was the one NON-SHITTY 'Shrek' sequel (i.e. before they started running the concept [too far] into the ground). : P But either way, I'm glad to see a Pixar film now at the top.

Incredibles

Having just recently rewatched EVERY PIXAR movie in order, I have come to absolutely love The Incredibles. It was towards the bottom of my list before - but I think it's great. It's by far one of the best super hero movies of all time and if that movie was translated into an actual feature - I think the story would still hold up. Brad Bird is going to kick ass with MI4. That being said, I loved Rataouille way more the second time around but Monsters Inc. is still my favorite (TS3 coming in

A prophecy fulfilled

I'm not surprised nor am I upset by this news. The film deserves every penny.

WELL DESERVED!!!!

I made sure to catch this film twice since it's release. Alongside Inception, Toy Story 3 was by far my favorite film this year. I'm so happy it turned out to be the film I always hoped it would be.

Not that this matters, as Toy Story 3 still reigns supreme, but that list is a bit off. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs currently sits at #3 with a total of $886.7 million. But I digress...Go TS3!!

It's awesome that Toy Story 3 is the highest grossing animated movie of all time. It was a great movie and wrapped up the trilogy in a perfect way. Good for all those involved. Hopefully, these same people get recognition come awards time.

By the way, Shrek 2 wasn't a shitty movie. It wasn't great, but it was good. Now Shrek 3 was garbage.

Great news, but...

...not to rain on the parade, but Shrek 2 is still the highest-grossing animated film *domestically*, and Toy Story 3 will probably not pass it. TS3 needs another $40 mil and unfortunately it's almost out of theaters Stateside.

However, I'm glad to see it #1 worldwide, because it definitely deserves it. It should pass $1 bil soon and I hope to god it surpasses Alice in Wonderland and becomes the biggest film of 2010 (how that mediocre movie grossed more than a billion dollars SO QUICKLY is

I don't get the love for The Incredibles

It's not a bad film by any means, it's good enough.

But out of all of the original and well produced Pixar movies it is by far the most derivative and unimaginative. Especially when compared to Fantastic Four for example.

I agree. The Incredibles was good, but i didn't find it to be as interesting and entertaining as Monsters Inc., the Toy Stories, Ratatouille, or even Finding Nemo.

I agree as well. I honestly think Cars was a better movie than Incredibles. It is a good movie but not even in Pixars top 5 or maybe even top 10 for me. Still like it and think Pixar has yet to fail me.

Apparently the film's metaphor went over your head: should extraordinary people have to conform to the lifestyle of ordinary people simply because the latter are the majority and thus shouldn't be made to feel inadequate? Definitely one of the most thought-provoking themes in the Pixar canon, IMO.
