Tracy Morgan becoming Redd Fox for Lee Daniels' Richard Pryor biopic

11.12.2015

It's been a long trip through development in order for a Richard Pryor biopic to get made, but it appears we're closer than ever to it finally happening. Granted, I won't believe it until cameras start rolling, as this project has been on the precipice of being a real thing before only for everything to collapse. However, Lee Daniels is moving ahead with his casting, believing this time will be different.

The latest addition to his roster - Tracy Morgan. The comedian, who is in the middle of a comeback following his recovery from the serious injuries he suffered in an accident on the New Jersey Turnpike in 2014, is in talks to play Redd Foxx, the legendary comedian who played a big role in the development of Pryor as a stand-up act. In the film, Foxx will be shown to have owned a local comedy club which became the launching pad for Pryor's career. Foxx, of course, would later go on to star in the classic SANFORD & SON and had the chance to work with Pryor on the feature film HARLEM NIGHTS.

Foxx joins what already appears to be an all-star cast with Mike Epps portraying Pryor. Kate Hudson will serve as his widow Jennifer, with Eddie Murphy and Taraji P. Henson playing his parents. Lee Daniels even managed to convince Oprah Winfrey to take part, playing the woman who raised Pryor - his grandmother.

OK, this casting is a bit of genius. I haven't been itching for the Richard Pryor biopic, but Tracy Morgan's delivery actually reminds me of Foxx quite a bit.

he must be playing a younger Redd Fox, unless their using heavy makeup to age Morgan. I wonder if Morgan can sound like Redd, because their voices really aren't similar at all. Morgan is pretty funny in my book, so I'm interested to see what he does with his portrayal of the actor.

Morgan ought to do a Redd Fox biopic of his own. Fox was hilarious, and vastly underrated.

What an awesome cast!

I vaguely remember hearing Pryor endorse Epps to play him when he was alive. Which has to be the only reason you would see him mixed with the rest of this cast.

Mike Epps playing Pryor? That's gonna turn out nice. The man doesn't exactly have the voice for it. Pryor had a distinctive slighty high pitched voice and Mike's is deeper. And I've never seen Mike do any good impressions. Eddie would have been a better choice once upon a time. I guess I'll reserve judgment for release but that's just my humble opinion and mere observations. The best biopics (Ray, Walk The Line, etc.), actors have been able to impersonate the icon they're embodying to a tee.

Judging by that video he's got the voice and mimicry down pat. As for the physical resemblance however...
