Trailer for Admission starring Tina Fey and Paul Rudd looks like decent fun

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

The combination of Tina Fey and Paul Rudd seems like a perfectly vanilla comedy team-up and this trailer for their new film ADMISSION is just that.  However, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.  It seems that Fey has grown comfortable into the awkward, witty, sexy-but-doesn’t-know-it roles and they seem to be working fine for her.  Indeed, her character in this is barely a few steps away from Liz Lemon on 30 Rock, but credit where it’s due; she plays it well.

I think this looks like it could be fun, even “cute,” but it’s not something I’ll camp out for.  This is one of those films that falls into one of three categories: 1) Rental (most likely for me) 2) Date movie, or 3) Senior citizen discount film.  It won’t be breaking any Fandango early ticket sales records.

Here’s a drawn-out synopsis:

Admission is about the surprising detours we encounter on the road to happiness. Straight-laced Princeton University admissions officer Portia Nathan (Tina Fey) is caught off-guard when she makes a recruiting visit to an alternative high school overseen by her former college classmate, the free-wheeling John Pressman (Paul Rudd). Pressman has surmised that Jeremiah (Nat Wolff), his gifted yet very unconventional student, might well be the son that Portia secretly gave up for adoption many years ago. Soon, Portia finds herself bending the rules for Jeremiah, putting at risk the life she thought she always wanted — but in the process finding her way to a surprising and exhilarating life and romance she never dreamed of having.

Directed by Paul Weitz (BEING FLYNN, ABOUT A BOY), and starring Fey, Rudd, Wallace Shawn, Lily Tomlin, Michael Sheen, and Gloria Reuben, ADMISSION is open on March 8, 2013.
