Trailer for submarine thriller Phantom, starring David Duchovny, Ed Harris, and William Fichtner

Dec. 27, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Hmmm.  Well, that was...interesting.  The new trailer for PHANTOM, a Cold War submarine thriller starring David Ducovny, Ed Harris, William Fichtner, and Lance Henrikson has, ahem, surfaced, and plays very much like a made-for-cable movie, but with a pretty rock-solid cast.  It's a round-up of secondary stars and character actors, all of which are awesome actors, which precludes me from labelling this a Scyfy movie-of-the-week.  It's certainly possible that they could carry the film, which echoes the majority of the submarine films we've seen in the past.

Here's to hoping the actors involved can "float this boat."

Have a look:

Here's the synopsis:

Ed Harris plays the captain of a Cold War Soviet missile submarine who has secretly been suffering from seizures that alter his perception of reality. Forced to leave his wife and daughter, he is rushed into a classified mission, where he is haunted by his past and challenged by a rogue KGB group (led by David Duchovny) bent on seizing control of the ship’s nuclear missile. With the fate of humanity in his hands, Harris discovers has been chosen for this mission in the belief he would fail. PHANTOM is a suspense submarine thriller about extraordinary men facing impossible choices.

PHANTOM, directed by Todd Robinson (LONELY HEARTS) and starring Ed Harris, David Ducovny, Lance Henrikson, William Fichtner, Sean Patrick Flannery, and Jonathan Schaech is set to submerge into theaters on March 1, 2013.

The plot seems pretty generic and the visual effects shots, especially towards the end, looked painfully bad - but you're right about it sounding like a solid cast. Ed Harris is great in pretty much everything he's in. As for favourite submarine flick, Crimson Tide, directed by the late Tony Scott. Great interplay between Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington, and a very tense and exciting film. Hunt For Red October just about ties with it, love Basil Poledouris' Hymn to Red October, and Sean

When they feel the need to tell you how many awards and nominations each lead actor has received, it tells me they may not be all that confident in the material.

My favorite submarine movies have tended to waver between Red October and Crimson Tide (it's been a really long time since I saw that movie). But recently I watched Das Boot for the first time, and think it may be one of the greatest movies I've ever seen, even if it's more stressful than entertaining.

Ed Harris is my all time favorite actor. I wish he'd get better work.

I think it looks great. David Duchovny needs to be in more films even though Californication is amazing.

The visual effects look Direct-To-DVD. Granted, they could have released unfinished VFX, but still.

I haven't seen U571 since I was a child- So I can't remember if it's still good. However- Red October is flawless
