First trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug features lots of leaping and a peek at the dragon

Jun. 11, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The first trailer for THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG has arrived and features more of the grand scale adventure you've come to expect from Peter Jackson. For the second part of this journey we're introduced to a number of new (and returning) characters, including Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans), and a closer look at the titular Smaug, minus the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch. The first film in the new trilogy underwhelmed some, but was still a massive hit and this looks to follow the same model. Personally, I loved first entry and am excited as hell to see this, but I know some are a little more leery.

Leap in!:

Here's the synopsis:

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventures of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAG, starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Luke Evans, Lilly Evangeline, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Lee Pace, Elijah Wood, Stephen Fry, Billy Connelly, and Andy Serkis, continues the journey on December 13, 2013.

Looks like... LOTR the computer animated version

Didn't see the first one and won't see this one. I'm sure it's not a bad movie, but I just hope they get burned a bit for trying to cash grab from their fans by turning it into 3 movies.

Is it me or does Orlando look a little odd? Either they need to fire the makeup artist or they CGI'd his face. It's creepy.

They probably CGI'ed his face. Orlando was 23 when he appeared in FELLOWSHIP and he's 36 now. Obviously they have to make him look younger in THE HOBBIT. It doesn't look too bad, but they'll likely clean it up further for the movie.

Ok, but....the number or problems is lengthy... :(

1) Going downriver in an open barrel won't stay afloat
2) Elves wouldn't send the barrels back without lids...what, do the Lake men have to re-build a lid every time?
3) What's with the giant dog? Or is that a bear? If it's a bear, if it IS Beorn, what's with him attacking them?
4) Smaug NEVER sees Bilbo (he's ALWAYS invisible with the ring on when with Smaug)
5) The barrel trip is secret, most especially to the Elves, until they arrive in Lake Town, so there shouldn't be Elven Archers on

6) If Elven Archers WERE watching them escape, they should've been shot and killed
7) Especially with no lids on the barrels...
8) The meeting between Dwarves and Wood Elves takes place at night, and by a group of them, not by Legolas (though he could certainly have been there)
9) Azog ...again... sigh...
10) There were no orcs attacking the Dwarves during their barrel ride

Other than that, it almost resembles the book.

3) I'm pretty sure that's a Warg
9) He STILL looks much more intimidating than any single Orc/Uruk-hai from LOTR : P

And, sheesh, do all adaptations have to be THAT literal for you?

Literal? No. Sensible? Yes. You can't float downriver through rapids in an open barrel. That's just physics.
No lids = stupid business decision. Obviously it was a director's choice to show faces more readily than "in-barrel close ups". And Azog was dead, long, long dead (150 years) by the time the Hobbit took place.

It's ok. The fact that I got so many thumbs down just reinforces what I already knew.

I'll be honest

That looked pretty shitty. Terrible CGI, and way too much of it. I know it's an early trailer and it might not be complete yet, but part of the LOTR trilogy that was so appealing was how real the worlds appeared. This looked more like Alice in Wonderland... didn't care for the first installment either.

Seriously, how is CGI any less believable than a blatant guy in a costume? : P

I wasn't a fan of the first one, but this trailer has me interested...(and it may have to partly do with Evangeline Lilly's elf warrior)...

This is on my 'must see' list.

Looks gorgeous and full of spectacular visuals/vistas. I just hope I get emotionally involved with this one a bit more than I did with An Unexpected Journey, which I liked, but didn't love.

Aside from Legolas, this looks like the Hobbit I remember from the the book. They've dispensed with reintroducing people to the LOTR universe, and jumped straight into the action. Bard and Smaug are here. I still hope they don't save the Battle of Five Armies until the last movie. But from a business standpoint, Jackson would do better to save it.

I think it is confirmed that the Battle of Five Armies is going to be in the last movie. Sounds like it is going to be massively huge and have quite a bit of screen time devoted to it.

Hate the colour pallet of these new films. Gone is the lushness of LOTR, replaced with a drab teal and orange monotony. Fire the colorist, it's suffocating.

Looks great but I still don't understand why there has to be a reveal for Smaug. I'm pretty sure he's just gonna look like all other dragons in movies.

Really good trailer. It looks like it's taking the darker route just like The Two Towers did in the original trilogy.

I thought the dragon looked pretty good. I'm sure it'll look better by the time the film comes out.

Looks great, the environment are outstanding as usual like the other 4 films. The dragon looks odd though, too computerized looking. Doesn't look as good as those 1993 Jurassic Park dinosaurs (Though JP still looks better than most movies). Or the Deathly Hallows/Goblet of Fire dragons.

Agreed, the dragon definitely looks off. Which is weird because the dinosaur/monster designs WETA did for King Kong were incredible.

Looks beautiful! I know he got a lot of mixed reviews in the first one, but I'm glad Radagast is back. Does anyone else think Smaug is a little.... ordinary looking? Very basic dragon design, almost lizard-like.

I was pleasently surprised by the 1st one...

admittedly I've never been very passionate about the LOTR movies as others I know, and especially others on this site, and I've always had a sort of take them or leave them attitude about them, but the first Hobbit really resonated with me more than the other ones and I look forward to round 2. Some of the CG in this trailer worries me a bit, but I thought the same about the 1st one and it looked great in finished product. I like my fantasy a little darker usually but with that said, I'll watch

Legolas is back but not allowed to do so much battlefield acrobatics, as the LOTR movies led to a warning from Elfen Safety.

I wasn't a fan of the first one. it was just really boring for me. I am a huge Lord of the rings fan but IDK the 3D was really dark and it wasn't really that good in IMAX> :(

CAN'T WAIT!!

Even though I found the first one a bit overdone on CGI, I'm still in!

BTW, Madea has a new movie coming out on the same day as this. Pretty obvious choice who will win the battle of box office supremacy come December 13-15.

Cautiously Optimistic

Looks better than the first movie at least! My complaints are the CGI still looks terrible. It was the same with the first movie's early trailers but I figured they'd fix it by the time the movie came out....they didn't. It just doesn't match the aesthetics of the original trilogy, where they mostly shot on location, on big sets in the studio, and didn't use an overabundance of CGI. Jackson has just taken the lazy route with the Hobbit though, using CGI where it really isn't needed.

My expectations are much lower this time around, so we'll see!
