Trailer for the sequel to Gareth Edwards' Monsters brings the bugs

05.15.2014

I never got around to seeing MONSTERS, but I'm guessing Gareth Edwards impressed a few people with that flick, as he is the man responsible for the GODZILLA we'll be seeing in theaters this weekend. The original MONSTERS, dealing with a crashed probe bearing alien life that began to thrive on our planet, was an intriguing idea that Vertigo Films has decided to expand upon. That leaves us with MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT.

Check out the infestation here:

While the men behind the camera are relative unknowns, that gives them the benefit of being able to surprise us with some really strong material. This trailer is more of a teaser in that it's establishing a tone rather than the real meat of the story, but I'm willing to go along with it if it has enough to offer.

MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT, starring Joe Dempsie, Johnny Harris, Sofia Boutella, and Kyle Soller, is currently set to be released September 26 in the UK, but we can probably expect a stateside release sometime later in 2014.

I'm not 100% sure how this will help Sofia Boutella fight monsters . . . but something tells me it will be a factor. Definitely.

Not the most well put together trailer, and I wasn't digging the rhyming part of it. You know, sometimes expanding in a smaller manner on a first film works nicely, instead of making it feel way too big then the first one in comparison.

Yikes

To echo what was already said, jeez that was a painful trailer. I really enjoyed the first flick and am open to the idea of a sequel but man this trailer isn't doing anyone any favors. For a minute I thought I was sitting through another bad commercial for the military before the actual trailer started.

Completely Wrong Tone!

I really enjoyed what Gareth Edwards did with the original because it was a small scale character piece that incorporated "monsters" in a foreboding manner (almost as set dressing not the central premise). Scoot McNary gave an excellent performance in particular, this looks like a generic alien invasion movie that will have interchangeable soldier characters and a bunch of battle scenes that we've seen a hundred times. I'm not one to attack a film based purely on a trailer but this looks like

Oh and yes that music was awful boardering almost on comical. pass.

If the sequel to "Alien" was called "Aliens", the sequel to "Monsters" should be called "Monsterss".

Also, someone was having a two-for-one sale on helicopters.

Why do sequels always have to go bigger in scope? The 1st movie worked because the two characters were front and centre and when there was alien action in that movie we still focused on the main characters. Not cut away to some huge battle scene..May`be because it had a small budget but i think less is more. This looks like that Aaron Eckhart alien movie but in desert.Plus why did the writer of this article feel the need to post a picture of that woman doing that.Shes not doing that in the movie

I don't know about the movie itself but I couldn't help but feel incredibly distracted by that abysmal "rapping." Those rhymes were pretty painful, it sounded like it was written by a middle aged suburban white male trying to go 'street.' I really liked how he rhymed 'me' with 'Arabie' (wtf?!) and then brought it back and rhymed 'me' with 'me'... Genius!

The first movie was terrible, don't think I will be wasting another minute on this sequel. Especially after that shitty trailer.

The last 15 seconds was intriguing, but the first minute was excruciating.

Horrible trailer music. Wow, that was bad. I couldn't finish the trailer. The imagery looked okay I guess.

I'm guessing this will be the "28 Weeks Later"/"Aliens" to the original? Which is not a bad thing at all.

Yeah, I agree. If it's going the Aliens route then I'll still pay to see it. That's a good approach for this film, seeing as how the first was more intimate and character focused.
