Trailer, poster, and images for The Purge, starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey

Apr. 3, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Formerly titled VIGILANDIA, the new thriller THE PURGE, poses the premise that one night a year you can commit any crime (crimes?) you want within a 12 hour timespan, which is meant to do...well, I don't know what.  It basically serves the purpose of not allowing the police to interfere with a movie plot, which is basically another home invasion pic like THE STRANGERS or the upcoming YOU'RE NEXT.  That isn't to say that THE PURGE doesn't look interesting, it's just not the most polished rock in the collection.

Starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey as a couple who have a well-secured home for the 12-hour "purge" and basically settle in to wait out the madness, the doors are opened, quite literally, when their daughter lets in a stranger on the run, which seemingly invites a slew of evildoers to wreck havoc on the "innocent" family.

Check it out:

I'm a big fan of Hawke and Headey, so the stock jumps up a bit just with their involvement.  I'm growing weary of the Guy Fawkes-ish masked psychopaths with no true agenda other than murder/death/kill on the brain, though.  Perhaps THE PURGE will have a different take?

Here's the synopsis:

Given the country's overcrowded prisons, the U.S. government begins to allow 12-hour periods of time in which all illegal activity is legal. During one of these free-for-alls, a family must protect themselves from a home invasion.

THE PURGE, directed by James DeMonaco, begins on May 31, 2013.

Just a few moments of thought...

And the movie's central premise collapses in on itself. The trailer posits that due to the establishment of "the purge", a night where all crime is legal and people can get all violence and aggression "out of their system", that somehow the economy improves and unemployment goes down to zero (probably because the population drops dramatically from all the murder so there are suddenly more job openings?) The problem is, if ALL crime is legal, then thatincludes financial crimes like eembezzlement

The problem is, if ALL crime is legal, then thatincludes financial crimes like eembezzlement and fraud. So.... people will legally be allowed to pretty much empty out bank accounts with no fear of repercussions. The nation's economy would collapse after the first purge night.

I think it is a very cool idea. It's a movie folks. Is it out there? Sure. But let the normalities and imagination peak through a bit. It's like one of those a reality or post-apocalyptic pics that gives us a view at an optional universe. Gattaca? Truman Show? Jurassic Park? F*ck's sake, The Running Man. Let's enjoy originality at least. Does it look good? Kinda. But it is still a fresh take. I say it is worth a viewing, theater or rental.

The problem I'm having, and I suspect others are having is that the contrivance is based on a total lack of logic. Gattaca is a high-concept contrivance, but it has logic underpinning it. A single night of unpoliced mayhem, as the underpinning of an otherwise perfect utopian society? This reads a somebody trying to find a narrative shortcut into making a home-invasion flick that feels like it has some artistic cred. I'll grant you that you're seeing the artistic cred, but I can't get past the

You have a gun. 8 shots. 8 people. You take out most of them. Mainly 6 if you're a bad shot. Then you wait for 2 of them with whatever you've got.

Maybe the point is that this also gives the "good and honest" people free reign to "take out the trash". Still a shaky premise.

One element I thought of right away is imagine in the story that there was a group of highly-trained operatives/law enforcement who go out into the city of their own free will and protect people/families from home invaders, etc. Fuck that would be an awesome angle of the story I think.

I felt the premise is completely ridiculous to say the least. But your idea would make for a great twist within the movie. I love it.

As ridiculous as the premise is, it allows opportunity for some incredible character development and surprises in the story. Hopefully they don't waste it. The very thought that nobody is coming to help you. On that note though the overall idea of a "purge" is pretty ridiculous.

I think they're shooting themselves in the foot though by confining this huge story into one house with a slasher story. Hopefully it expands well beyond the house cause there's so much potential.

dumb

That's gotta be one of the dumbest premises I've seen in awhile.

I'm not sure how anyone can thumbs down your comment. You could like the trailer, but if anyone thinks that premise isn't a ridiculous Rube Goldberg contraption, I have some oceanfront property in Arkansas to sell you.

Interesting idea, though the cynicism is pretty evident. The premise is a bit ridiculous, and find it hard to believe that people are going to buy it. However, it also reminds me a bit like The Lottery, which had the same idea behind it.

Isn't this one of the NRAs proposed ideas to cut down on violence?

Meh.

The Strangers. You're Next. And now the Purge. I guess the new trend for horror movies is home invasions with creeps in weird masks. Ah the originality of Hollywood.

Not exactly new. The Strangers came out a while ago and You're Next is actually from last year but only now getting a release. Home invasion has been a topic for a while though.

I'm eager to see You're Next based on all the positive buzz it's had from festivals. Supposedly that one does play out different than the typical home invasion flick.

what a horrible fucking premiss.
