Train on! How to Train Your Dragon 2 announced

04.27.2010

It's been slaying at the box office, so it's no surprise that HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGONis getting a sequel.

CEO of Dreamworks Animation Jeffrey Katzenberg announced the sequel after the first quarter financial results came out, "2010 is off to a strong start, thanks in large part to the performance of 'How to Train Your Dragon,' which – having grossed nearly $375 million to date in worldwide box office – has become DreamWorks Animation's next franchise. We plan to release the sequel theatrically in 2013."

Katzenberg also raved about everyone's favorite technology powerhouse: 3D, "3D continues to have a tremendous impact on the industry at large and we are now looking forward with great anticipation to bringing 'Shrek Forever After,' the final chapter in our beloved 'Shrek' series and the first in 3D, to audiences across the globe next month." The only film so far where 3D really worked for me was AVATAR, other than that I don't see the point in releasing every film in 3D. Plus it gives me an awful headache.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is still staying strong holding the #1 spot at the box office. By now it's grossed nearly $180 million dollars and will continue to climb. Everyone down for the sequel?

A LIttle Bit Torn

So, I have hated Dreamworks' other CGI flicks, aside from the first 'Shrek', which is merely blah, instead of hate worthy, but "Dragon" was a bloody, bonafide masterpiece, and while I'd like to return to these characters and this world, I'm skeptical that Dreamworks knows how to pull it off.

YES! With the exception of the first Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, I really didn't think Dreamworks had it in them to pull out a decent movie (or one to even closely rival Pixar) - then I saw this - and man talk about stepping up. The ending alone was a genius stroke for a 'kids' movie. Can not wait for a sequel - roll on 2013!

Good news, good news.

Strange...I was just thinking to myself last night, "I wonder how come news of a Dragon sequel hasn't popped up somewhere yet." Lo and behold. Anyway this is awesome news. I loved the movie. So much fun, humor was good, score was pretty fantastic, characters were lovable. I'd definitely love to see a sequel.

The 3D in how to Train Your Dragon was good, but everything else was pretty mediocre. Although it is a kids movie so.. Dreamworks can bleed this thing to death. Just don't count me in for watching any of the sequels.

On another note, the 3D in the new Shrek trailer was terrible!

The 3D while good, was probably the worst damned part of the movie.

It was (much to my surprise, as I have hated all their other CGI films) rather brilliant with likable and engaging characters and the best soundtrack of the year.

Haven't seen it...

...but I keep hearing awsome things about it, maybe I'll just have to check it out, so I guess Dragons is the new trend?

Definitely down with a franchise. Cressida Cowell has a whole series (I had know idea) and apparently she goes into this world in a very detailed way. The next book is called How To Be A Pirate, so we'll see if that's what they stick with for the movie sequel.

unfortunetly they will more then likely just stick the how to train your dragon characters into a really weak plot with a silly goal. they dont want to do something new/related by the same person when they can beat this idea to death first

I knew this was coming when I saw how much money it made the last few weeks. This movie was great, but I would hate for it to become the next "Shrek" (a great first movie brought down by disappointing sequels).

Animated movies and movies like Tron look great in 3D and there was more than one book so they probably have an idea of what they want to do for the next one
