Transcendence screenwriter Jack Paglen to pen sequel to Ridley Scott's Prometheus

Jun. 17, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Well, it looks like the Engineer Gods have heard the prayers for a sequel to Ridley Scott's 2012 PROMETHEUS. Screenwriter Jack Paglen, who recently penned the Wally Pfister helmed TRANSCENDENCE with Johnny Depp, is now gearing up to pen a sequel to the ambiguous sci-fi pic, which serves as a psuedo-prequel to the ALIEN franchise. The first film's script was originally penned by Jon Spaits with a massive rewrite by Damon Lindelof, which leaned more on the Engineers of the film, rather than the xenomorph's that evolve out of it.

No word on how Paglen will approach the sequel, but director Ridley Scott has said that he'd like to continue the journey of Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and damaged android David (Michael Fassbender) as they chase after the homeworld of the Engineers in an attempt to find the truth about human existence. I've made my case for the sequel already, as I really enjoyed the first one, warts and all (and let's face it, there are some pretty big ass warts), but I'm sure some will groan and seethe over the news that this is progressing forward.

So let's hear it: Is this good or bad news?

Prometheus was a breath of fresh air for me. The thing I got tired with most of the Alien films is that at its core it was always about the same thing; man vs aliens. With Prometheus they brought the mythology and background of the whole shindig to the forefront and that's why I loved it. Also, it has some of the best CGI I've ever seen.

I enjoyed PROMETHEUS, flaws and all

so I'm interested in seeing where this one goes. And I'd like to see a PROMETHEUS Director's Cut if it solves the issues I - and everyone else - had with this film.

Thank goodness Lindelof is not coming back.

Even though Transcendence has yet to be released, I'd feel more comfortable bringing some new blood on this thing versus someone who had nearly destroyed both the Alien and Star Trek franchises. Hopefully, this gets put into production soon for a 2015 release date.

Lindelof was doing what he was told. The special features on the bluray tell the whole story. 90% of what everyone disliked about Prometheus was the result of Ridley Scott.

Lindelof also was co-writer on Star Trek Into Darkness, a film that was entertaining, but not original in its execution. It came off as a light plagiarism of Wrath of Khan.

I'm pretty sure he takes some responsibility for his work on Star Trek as well as Prometheus.

Of course he takes responsibility for all of his work. My point is so many people are quick to put all of the blame for Prometheus faults on Lindelof and it is getting old. If Ridley chooses to handle "Paradise" the way he did Prometheus, it doesn't matter who the writer is - it will have the same exact problems.

Sigismundo, you do make some good points, but it goes both ways. While - true - the criticism that Lindelof is fully responsible is repetitive, the defense that it was primarily Scott is also repetitive. While it may indeed be Scott's error in how the Prometheus script was executed, Lindelof doesn't have a good rep himself (e.g. Lost, and the aforementioned Star Trek film...and to an extent Prometheus).

I do agree that the same thing can happen with the sequel, but I hope the screenwriter is

I do agree that the same thing can happen with the sequel, but I hope the screenwriter is a bit more proactive (for lack of a better term) and gives us a film that is superior to the first....or at least gives an effort towards a superior film....regardless of how Scott executes it.

All you need to do is read the before and after scripts for Prometheus. Lindelof's rewrites turned it into a quasi-religious, quasi-philosophical meandering mess. He has a discernible pattern of doing exactly this in all of his writing. He seems to believe that if he creates a lot of vague, pseudo-spiritual plot points audiences will believe his work is much deeper than it is.

I'm very glad he is off this project.

Part of me is wondering why I'm so okay with this thing. And mind you, when I first saw Prometheus, I thought it was pretty darn good. Only when thinking about it after did I really feel any of that negativity people are so keen to talk about. The biggest issue was those two idiots who get lost and do the obvious dumbass thing. But the ambiguous ending left me wondering what would happen to the two most interesting characters in the movie. I hope Shaw can reassemble David though.

Restore the original Prometheus!

If you've seen the special features of Prometheus by now you would probably know how much more sense the film would have made with those deleted scenes put back in, well it did to me anyway. I don't even understand why they where left out or changed in the way that they were when they actually added to the overall story. A 'Directors Cut' is needed first then the sequel.

Whatever the first film's shortcomings, it was still visually and thematically interesting and one of the better films of the year - if it fell short of being the act of genius we all wanted, it was still better than a lot of the sci-fi movies we get. I'd welcome a sequel and hope that a decent script is sacrificed in favour of the nonsensical aspects of the first.

I enjoyed Prometheus but yes it did leave some to be desired. Transcendence sounds like its going to be a deep, character driven scifi from what I have read and heard so this is good news I think.

Not a fan of the first Prometheus (although, Idris Elba was cool and Noomi Rapace was very cute). There were inconsistent characters - primarily scientists who aren't very smart and plot holes galore. The film looked beautiful, but the execution was poor. However, I'm keeping an open mind about the sequel, hoping a more well-rounded script gives us characters to 'care' about and a story that leads us awaiting (rather than dreading) a third entry.

Too, I would hope that the sequel doesn't

Too, I would hope that the sequel doesn't have its audience do 'homework' in order rationalize what it has onscreen (e.g. watch commentaries, read tie-ins or books by long-dead authors, etc). A movie should be able to stand on its own, unless it's a sequel that is building on characters and situations. Not too mention, that's a lazy and hackified(yes, that's a word I made up) way of filmmaking.

YES

Personally I loved the first one especially after listening to the commentary on the blu-ray which sheds much more light into the story. Can't wait.

So, elephant in the room:

Will this one make sense?

Look, Prometheus was an exceptionally pretty film, but it was also extraordinarily illogical and half-baked. It also has the biggest deus ex machina I've ever witnessed.

I'm glad a sequel is moving forward. I just really hope half the movie doesn't consist of a new crew searching for the lost Prometheus only to get picked off one by one. It's been done too much and beginning to be tiring. Just stick with Shaw and David - the way it ended opens up the possibility to something entirely different and strange.

Also, after watching the blu ray features, hopefully Ridley Scott doesn't interfere as much with the script this time around.

I enjoyed Prometheus. I may not have enjoyed it as much as Alien, and Aliens but it was good. I would welcome a sequel as long as we get to see some xenomorph's this time, and I would like to see where the Engineers came from!

We're gonna need a bigger Engineer.

I thought Prometheus was a pretty odd flick...odd, but intriguing. I think I can afford to blow eight more bucks to see what comes next. Not to mention I'm usually a big fan of Scott's films.

I really didn't like the first one. Great ideas, terrible script & characters. Though Jack Paglen's Transcendence script is pretty damn good. Maybe he can salvage the Prometheus franchise, but the first one left such a bad taste in people's mouths that there might not be an audience for it. Prometheus already played it's main attraction cards, being a prequel to Alien & the epic return of Ripley Scott to sci-fi, and those cards will not work again.

I disagree. The backlash was so intense, (and something I have never seen before), that the people who hated it the most will be first in line to see it. If only out of curiosity. I think the only difference this time around is people know better than to walk in expecting something life changing, (hopefully Scott approaches the press a little differently this time around, but that is a whole other conversation.)

The only way i'll see this is if it has nothing to do with the Prometheus train wreck of a movie...is it too much to ask for a true Alien prequel?
