Transformers: Shia says he's done, Michael Bay recycles footage

Jul. 2, 2011by: Dave Davis

After thrice being caught up in the calamitous crunching conflict of computer-rendered metal bipeds, Shia LaBeouf is saying "No" to more saying "No no no no" in the TRANSFORMERS series.

"I'm sure they'll make more of them, it's still a very hot franchise, there's still value in it, I think people will still go to see it. I just don't know if I have anything to contribute," says the refreshingly outspoken actor (to the chagrin of his PR humans, no doubt).

"I love making them. I love the crew, I love Michael, I love the cast, I love [the character] Sam. I like doing it," he clarifies. "I don't have anything new to contribute."

Meanwhile, anyone who thinks Michael Bay isn't a responsible, cost-effective and environmentally conscious filmmaker will be glad to know he recycles. Cinema Blend has pointed to the evidence below (via someone's T:DOTM cam bootleg, alas), in which Bay repurposes action footage from his own box office dud THE ISLAND with seamlessly added robotic mayhem.

Extra Tidbit: How would you feel about a non-Shia TRANSFORMERS? And what about Bay reusing footage -- wise, or just weird?

not a big deal

re-using footage is common. there is worst things going on with Michael Bay than using 5 seconds of stock footage.

Too much insanity?

I wasn't going to see this film UNTIL I saw this article. That recycled footage made me laugh so damn hard. Michael Bay is officially a genius for me now and I'm officially a fan. The movie was out of sight! So over the top, so damn patriotic, hilarious, overboard, emotionally draining, and eye-exhausting. It's true, it could have ended an hour earlier, but wow, Bay for life! Can he please do the Hulk now?

I'm a big Linkin Park fan..

but that song was recycled way too many times lol Every time the audience was supposed to know a scene just got emotional, they played the first few seconds of piano from "Iridescent".
I loved TF3 for what it was, but hearing the same song at least 5 times in one movie gets old.

Reusing footage is an interesting one, though it does save time and money, you have to wonder if was reused for artistic purposes, or whether it's just lazy film making, 'we have this footage we might as well reuse it even though it doesn't add anything to the story.'
It has been happening for years [link]

Not sure if this has been posted - don't care to look through 72 replies. The reason the footage was reused was because during filming of the original scene for Transformers 3, an extra was critically injured and the producers / director decided not to use the footage out of respect to the extra and her family. JoBlo, at least have the decency to update your article

Footage is reused a lot in big budget movies too.

As for Shia, I won't miss him. He was annoying.

How about a top ten of reused footage? After reading this, the chase scene in Eddie Murphys "Metro" comes into my mind (the one with the runaway cable car). I guess I have seen it in a dozen other B-and TV movies since then.

Who cares if he recycled footage from the island, which was his only box office bomb & very underrated IMO, i am sure this is not the 1st time & last time a director has recycled footage, didnt he use footage from Apollo 13 for Armageddon, also other directors have done the same, this just an attack from bay haters. Also i am so not buying the ones on here who said they noticed the footage from the island, no one would have known if it wasnt mentioned.

the second i saw that scene in t3 i knew it was from the island... and in t2 with the uav flying and the afterburner hitting the "cam" was also in the first... in t3 the very last scene of earth was also in al three when the transformers were crashing down to earth.... that being said, i still found the movie VERY entertaining and the 3d was awesome... people love action, the imax i went to was sold out, and everyone was very very happy with it. people dont realize how big these types of movies

Well, I don't want to have an answer riddled with spoilers, but after this last movie... I don't know what else they could do?

Pretty much cut and dry to the outcome of the millenia long war.

And I'm not too overly concerned with reused footage as long as it worked. And I didn't despise the movie enough to try and pick it apart scene by scene like someone else apparently did.

Well...

...I do hate it when footage is recycled, but in this case I could care less. Besides, didn't Bay use the same aerial shot of the White House in "The Rock" and "Armageddon"?

Probably the worst offense of recycled footage was in the awful "Stigmata". When she has her episode on the subway, the exterior shot of the train is from "Money Train". Yup, that's right, you can see the pole sticking out of the front window and everything.

Who cares! It was a blast!

First Point -I could care less that he recycled footage... This movie was the most fun in a theater I've had all year!

Second point - Who has this much time on their hands on a fourth of July weekend to figure this out? Go outside. Grill something. Blow shit up. Happy 4th!

Bay re-using same footage lazy?

In my book its resourceful and cost effective. The scene kicks ass in TF3, all that matters to me. As for Shia, I dug him in this franchise, so I will miss him...

I agree with your sarcasm:

Not lazy: What you call lazy, I call smart.
Not uninventive: The scene whooped my ass, all that matters.
Not deceptive: That one made me laugh. Bay is not my GF cheating on me over here. He re-used footage and created a new scene with it (a practice that is actually frequent in the biz, but cause its Bay its harped on). He's not trying to DECEIVE anybody, he's just getting a HUGE movie made on budget and on time. Whatever he has to do to pull that off, am all

So what.

Who cares about any of this?
He can recycle all day, he can make Shia free Transformers, the fact of the matter is the dude hasn't made a good flick since The Island and that isn't going to change regardless because he's not a good director.

Bay sucks eh?

How about the countless directors and editors that have recycled sound effects and music scores from different movies into their own? That's a long list my friends. And Bay is FAR from being the first director to recycle footage from another movie.

well, a transformers movie without shia, would be like going to the beach on 86 weather instead of 104, its still the beach, but on a less hot day :P
meaning that shias character adds nothing to the storytelling itself, hes just a guy that knows optimus prime and bumblebee, so, im pretty sure that the franchise can survive shias departure...
regarding the recycling of footage, i think its weird, not that he did it, because i think its cool, because a scene like this to be made again,

regarding the recycling of footage, i think its weird, not that he did it, because i think its cool, because a scene like this to be made again, must take a lot of time and money, so re-using the already used footage is ok by me, what i think its weird is that he got it from another movie, that, i think is weird, arent there like some copyright infringment here??? well, if there are, they probably sorted it out, so, all and all, im ok with michael bays copy/paste :D :D :D

You think Michael Bay is the only one who re-uses footage? Would you even have noticed it had somebody not told you it was a shot from The Island? Come on. I think what we really need to be worrying about is the guy who found that re-used shot in the first place. He clearly needs a hobby.

Two seconds of recycled footage to replace a filmed stunt where a stuntperson was injured (hence why the footage wasn't used) is lazy? Let's see you make a movie that makes over $100 million in just 4 days. As the saying goes, put your money where your mouth is.

The fanboy butthurt here is amazing

The footage quote unquote "recycled" footage doesn't even total more than 5 seconds and people are kicking up a storm about it? Did you just completely discount the 2 and a half hour film that was made up of new footage?

Or is this just fuel for the fire from the fanboys that have hated this film franchise from the start? What I can't understand is the hate for Bay. The majority of the people that seem to complain bring up points of "lazy filmmaking". Really? You don't even begin to

The majority of the people that seem to complain bring up points of "lazy filmmaking". Really? You don't even begin to understand the first thing about that massive process itself and you're going to judge someone's career based on 5 seconds of footage, that has accumulated over a billion dollars in gross revenue, as being a "lazy filmmaker"? Nothings ever going to make you happy, so stop seeing his films if you hate them so much. They keep making them because you KEEP giving them money.

The point no one is making is the reason behind the use of the footage in question here. I did a lot of digging and it turns out that a female pedestrian driver was injured badly during the filming of the sequence and out of respect they did not use the neccesary footage required to have the scene cut together correctly and used the car destruction from The Island instead.

Hell, I would do the same thing out of respect. It's 5 seconds guys, get over it.

Just a few of his favorite CRAARSHES

To me its just the perfect metaphor at how all his movies are the same. Look the same, lit the same, feel the same, sound the same. I might as well be watching the Island this weekend, it'd hit the same beats and at least there'd be ScarJo to look at. And thus there's no lasting visceral impact from any of his movies.

Shia, you NEVER contributed anything to the Transformers movies. You were a walking studio note whose entire existence ruined every childhood dream I had of seeing a proper Transformers movie. I'm not surprised that Bay recycled footage either, the man is a hack. When you're only good at explosions that doesn't mean anything, the cinematographers, stunt men, demolitions experts, SFX and VFX guys who work on Bay's movies are all talented, this guy can't direct a scene of real comedy or human

LOL not even 5 seconds. To tell you the truth I wouldn't even notice. If they didn't say anything. i still loved the movie. Everybody who hates it, is on crack. And they all bitch at it for the same reason, acting, plot. It's transformers. LOL and did you look at the roster of actors. It like none of them were able to act before.

The Island may be considered a box office dub but it is by far Bays best movie.

wow.. I dig Michael Bay and love the way he films his own stunts and action scenes while using CGI only when he needs to.. but.. this is just indefensible.

Bah-Weep-Granagh-Weep-NiNi-Bong

***SOME SPOILERS***Funny, after taking my 12 yr old son to see it, he said he wanted any new film to now be a live action version of the animated movie with Unicron. He even said that it should be set years in the future with Hot Rod etc and the Decepticon bodies from the end of this one being jettisoned into space where they meet/ encounter Unicron and brought back to life including Galvatron. Galvatron goes back to earth and snuffs out Prime and Hot Rod's Luke Skywalker coming of age begins.

Don't understand...

I really don't see what the big deal is with re-using footage from another of his movies. I mean, if it was minutes of footage, then yeah that's just lazy. But 2 whole seconds? I highly doubt 99% of the audience that has seen The Island even realized it. As long as it blends seamlessly, it doesn't matter. My friend saw it yesterday (he also saw The Island) and he didn't notice. I'll see for myself tomorrow :)

Thats the truth of it. I saw the island and all of bays movies. I am a huge fan of bays. Not his producing movies but his directing movies. I didn't even notice it. LOL.

I think Bay already said that he is done with Transformers after 3 anyway. Plus all this recycled footage shit.. who gives a fuck?! The Island was only a dud in the states, overseas it was a HUGE hit! Only Bay movie (Directed) to not do over 100 mil at the DOmestic box office. but recycling a few frames of footage, who gives a shit! It's not like randomly Ewan McGregor and Scarlet johanssen were in the movie for a minute without explanation!

In reply to Skelly:
BB1 was made for $19 mil was Bay's first release and made $65 off that $19. Hardly the failure stateside that Island was. That said, Island was a surprisingly good flick despite its bad press.

The Island was Scarlet's most sexy moment, have to thank the Bay for that. It had some very slick semi-scifi action too.

I, for one, am outraged that Bay recycled two seconds of film! I mean how dare he utilize something that only the nittiest of film nitpickers would find?!? That two seconds has now ruined my life forever, and I'm thinking of starting a class action suit against Bay and Paramount! Who's with me?!
[/sarcasm]

Seriously, who really gives a shit about two seconds of recycled footage? If you do, then maybe you shouldn't be going to the movies as a means of being entertained.

While I think Bay could make another TF sequel with or without Shia involved, it just wouldnt be the same. Yes the robots are in many ways the main focus of the films, but its the human element added to these films that gets viewers to relate, and having invested 3 films into the lives of the mains character (Sam) and suddenly not have either Fox or Shia in the films would seem completely out of place.

done for now

i say let it rest and sit for a while. Let the movies sit on the shelf for a while and the memories linger. In 15-20 years, revamp the series with new cast and directors and call it fresh again. But until then, find another toy to play with

Bay-tastic

That scene in Tranny's 3 was spectacular... Who cares if he recycled certain parts... It probably helped w/ a bit of cost reduction... As far as non-Shia ? When Bay throws down some $$ I'm sure The Beef won't say No, No, No, No !!

I think I remember recycling scenes from the first transformers movie where bay used a scene from pearl harbour involving a ship.

The funny thing...

...is that if these guys who wasted their time nitpicking the video had not come up with this, I would never have noticed. Either way I don't care. They're his movies and the scenes look great regardless.
As well apparently the reason that's been stated for this is because of the stunt injury that occurred during this highway sequence where a woman suffered a brain injury. Rather than risk any more injury, Bay decided to just use stock footage from THE ISLAND instead.

I've heard that a stunt man was badly injured while shooting that scene, which caused Bay to resort to re-treating the older footage as apposed to re-shooting. But then I haven't been able to find any supporting evidence online.

Honestly, I think Bay and his Transformers movies suck, but this doesn't bother me - especially since it was pretty seamlessly applied.
