Trek 11 goes Imax

12.12.2008

STAR TREK When the Enterprise boldly goes where it's gone many times before in the J.J. Abrams directed STAR TREK on May 8th of next year, you'll be able to see the adventures of young Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew in glorious IMAX. That's right, the film will be opening simultaneously in regular theaters and the ridiculously amazing high definition of IMAX. In the film, young Kirk as portrayed by Chris Pine is at Starfleet Academy banging alien hotties and generally being a lazy douche when he pisses off young Spock (Zachary Quinto), gets stuck on Hoth, meets old Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and goes at it with a squid monster. Then the USS Kelvin blows up. Or something. The point is the film's gonna be all kinds of awesome on IMAX.

Bigger Problems

Does anyone in JJ's camp realize this will open 1 week after Wolverine? I plan on watching both of course, but it might be a good idea to reconsider the release date. I think Wolverine is going to kick a$$ at the box office. Thoughts anyone?

IMAX sucks and is overrated. THe movie is either good or bad or in between but hyping "IMAX" or "3-D" is a diversionary gimmick.

Why IMAX?

While they may be stretching the 35mm to fit the screen I do usually find IMAX to be a more immersive experience. I've seen a lot of movies in the format and never once regretted paying the few extra bucks. The sound is better, the picture quality seems a bit sharper than some screens around here and the stadium seating means I never have to deal with some too-tall fuckers head in my way.
Its a rare treat for me and I dig the hell out of it every chance I get to go.

It's still gonna suck balls. No matter how big of a screen you project it on.

OOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLDDDD

I don't see why they're releasing every big film that comes along in IMAX. They're only stretching the 35mm film across the screen. I could see the appeal of the Dark Knight on IMAX, as (parts of) it were designed to be shown on that screen. I probably would have seen it in IMAX if it wasn't sold out for weeks and if it wasn't an hour's drive to the closest one.
