Trek trailer! In HD!

11.17.2008

UPDATE - The trailer officially went online this morning and you can check it out below or head here to see it in HD.

The first real trailer for STAR TREK debuted in theaters this past weekend with QUANTUM OF SOLACE. I thought it looked pretty interesting but I'm not a TREK fan so I wasn't sure what that meant. So I asked some TREK fans their thoughts and it was overwhelmingly negative. Everyone seemed to agree that it was an OK looking film but it just wasn't STAR TREK. There were people cheering at the QOS screening I was at so it couldn't be all bad. Here's a bootleg look at the trailer with the full HD version coming online tomorrow. Let me know what you think below...

Wow. Nice. I Am not a past Star Trek fan, at all. But I could see myself getting into this fresh start.

How many films is Abrams, and the major cast members signed on for?

Good trailer, but it's nothing life-changing or spectacular. If I'm being completely honest, I liked the teaser trailer better -- unlike this brand-new trailer, it actually sent chills down my spine. Although I'm not ready to have an orgasm over this trailer, I'm still looking forward to the film.

The new "Watchmen" trailer is superior.

Amen to your amen. I'm tired of angry, die-hard fans bumming on good movies.

On a related note, any Watchmen fans that complain to me about the "No Squid In The Movie" problem I automatically slap.

Let me first say: Im no Trek fan.
Ive seen all the past movies and I always thought it was average at best. After seing this trailer I must say it kinda blew my mind, it doesnt look like a Trek movie which is more than ok for me. The fans will see it...the haters will see it...heck, Im even considering catching this one at the theaters...will it be available in IMAX?

Honestly...?

I don't know how I feel about this trailer and the movie. It looks great, but at the same time it doesn't feel like "Star Trek" at all (save for the spaceships). If it's a good thing, only time will tell.

Haters/hardcore Trekkies:

Consider this. JJ's Star Trek is going to do for your beloved show what Russell T Davies did for Doctor Who, IE make it cool, relevent and something that girls will want to watch too. Not that girls don't already watch Star Trek-- I know several that do-- but Doctor Who was never going to survive if it didn't find a broader audience and neither will Trek.

Oh, and May 2009 cannot come soon enough!

Haters, I was merely commenting on the over-generalization of CGI. I think we all can agree that CGI is awesome, wehn used properly. GGear0323 had it right. Back in the day, filmmakers had to be creative and imaginative to come up with special effects. Now all it takes is a mouse click. Directors like Del Toro treat CGI as a tool, like puppetry or cell shading...not to make the job easier or quicker, but to make the film look better. There are some bad apples out there, sure. But I'll take

JJ is smart to not try and please the fans. He knows he'll make a whole hell of a lot better movie by just pleasing the general public. Star Trek is one of my least favorite series of all-time, purely because it's boring. I'll argue with Trekkies who'll try to sit me down and make me watch the Star Trek cast going back in time to visit Mark Twain. Really?

With that said, this looks like a Star Trek film for the rest of us, finally a blockbuster Trek film that'll kick ass and take names. I'm

first of all, people shut up about the whole, "awwww, i hate CGI in movies". what the hell did you think they were going to do, back in the day they used models because they HAD to, stop acting like they were trying to keep things pure or something, and it doesnt look like a videogame, because if a videogame looked like that, that would be incredible and stunning.

anyway, @DeejayForte, the one thing i question is how your trek fans would know what the movie is like. they have no idea about

anyway, @DeejayForte, the one thing i question is how your trek fans would know what the movie is like. they have no idea about whether it is "less-sciency and intelligent", all they saw was a trailer that was made for everybody, not die hard fans. i mean it is crazy, it is almost like the only people who absolutely hate what has come out so far are Trek fans. weird

I've talked to trek fans about why they don't like it and pretty much they all agree is that they're making it more like star wars and less-sciencey and intelligent.

With nickdoll and Housecoat man on this. I'm also tired of all the relentless CGI extravaganzas in movies. I don't like movies that look like videogames! (and have similar weak plotting and dialogue.)

WOWEEEE

This looks amazing! I've always felt like Star Trek deserved a much more epic treatment and this looks to be it! Although a few of the films have come close (Star Trek 4 and 8 particularly) most have felt like extended episodes. This...this gave me goosebumps.

As for the use of CGI I mostly agree with nickdoll in that a lot of storytelling in 80's films seemed quite strong with tight pacing, editing and writing. I feel there was a change in the early 90's with the advent of digital

As for the use of CGI I mostly agree with nickdoll in that a lot of storytelling in 80's films seemed quite strong with tight pacing, editing and writing. I feel there was a change in the early 90's with the advent of digital technology where the focus has been taken away from storytelling on films like this and few have been successful at balancing high CGI with great acting, writing and directing. Much the way sound altered storytelling in the late 20's, CGI altered storytelling in the early 90's. Can you imagine if films like Back to the Future or Ghostbusters had been made today? They would have used CGI unrelentingly and probably to the loss of the story.
However, this is a Star Trek film that exists almost entirely in a Sci Fi world of space, aliens and action and to attempt to pull that off without extensive CGI would be ridiculous. So...Star Trek gets a pass...for now:)
And friends opinions of trailers have no bearing on me [link] the chill inducing goodness from the base of my spine tells me if its a film worth investing time and money in...nuffin else...no film illiterate fool will rob me of my splendor.

I am no Trekkie but I am pretty psyched for this movie. The trailer was pretty sweet and I think majority of the casting is perfect. I don't recall seeing Chris Pine in anything but the rest look like they are really gonna bring their A game in May.

IQuitMrWhite

There are good applications and bad applications for CGI.

Bad would be CGI Monkeys and Groundhogs in Indy 4, John McClain surfing on jet, 300, Jar Jar Binks, Fully CGI battle sequences with lifeless characters (Pirates 3, Transformers, Incredible Hulk, and Phantom Menace). In short, CGI is overused and is making films look like video games.

Good uses are when it is used sparingly, places where you don't even notice it. Case in point; Dark Knight and Casino Royale.

Good uses are when it is used sparingly, places where you don't even notice it. Case in point; Dark Knight and Casino Royale.

Even when looking at Quantum of Solace as a microcosm, which shots are better? When you see Daniel Craig (or stunt double) barely making a jump, or when you see waxy CGI Daniel Craig fall through the roof and land on scaffolding (shot is in trailer too).

Further proof? The effects of Raiders are preferable to Indy 4. Die Hard looks a hell of a lot better than Live Free or Die Hard. Casino Royale's fight scenes are better than Die Another Day's Bond surfing on a glacier.

So CGI has come a long way in making films look better... WHEN IT IS USED IN MODERATION. Or when used for animated projects (like PIXAR), which is an entriley different beast.

Seriously though, with movies like Star Trek, New Star Wars, Incredible Hulk, and Pirates 3, it looks like the filmmaker went and stuck his dick in an XBOX.

Trekkies are useless.

There is a very good reason "Star Trek" has abandoned the Trekkies. They are whiny little freaks who complain about every single change in a nacelle, for god's sake.

NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR OPINION, TREKKIES, ANYMORE.

Trekkies are the Republican Party of 2008. The world has moved on. Get over it.

And the new movie looks awesome. Too bad the only people who will hate it will be the idiot Trekkies, as always.

I'm not a trekkie, but when I saw this trailer friday night I was really impressed. I think hard-core trek fans are worried this will be a dumb-action movie, whereas star trek was more known for trying to create interesting sci-fi stories. But in my opinion this trailer is showing the big action scenes to try to generate a some more interest in the trek series after years of mediocracy.

I've never even seen a Star Trek film...

CGI makes me sick to my stomach. Therefore, this trailer made me want to vomit.

Bring back the 80s! The golden age of the action picture! Where stunts were special effects and men were men (not glossy 3D, lifeless in the eyes, versions of themselves).

I don't the negativity coming from Trek fans (everyone else seems to think it looks cool). Hello! Star Trek was much more 'bad' than it was 'good', damn it! The first season, while innovative for sure, was cheesy as fack (Kirk vs. that green lizard guy on YouTube for example); The Next Generation kicked ass, though; Deep Space Nine couldn't have possibly been more boring; Voyager was the absolute dumbest one of all ("Oh, noes! And half of the movies were garbage to boot.

What exactly is so God damn special about Star Trek that makes people want a re-invention to keep things the way they were. They way they were SUCKED!

saw this friday night! lol
First off, this trailer kicks ass and i am totally psyched about this movie. Doubts are out the window now. I'm not a trekkie im just a casual fan of the series and i am perfectly comfortable with what is being done here! this looks like the blockbuster i always knew trek could be! GO JJ!

By the way, what do your Trekkie pals want, for their series to remain dormant forever, nobody else was about to make another nemesis, and here you go getting a reboot. its like
