We choose our favorite 5 movies to watch for a Tony Scott marathon

Aug. 22, 2012by:

As a young man - too young to know what a director actually did - there were a few filmmakers that seemed to really shine in my young mind. Tony Scott gave me the inspiration to be a Navy pilot, he also helped fuel my passion for vampires, and he even made one of the most romantic action flicks ever made. This is the man that I remember. Scotts movies took me all over the world and whet my appetite for the adventure of cinema. His passing is tragic. With that said, we here at JoBlo.com wanted to take a moment to look back at his incredible body of work, specifically our top 5 favorites for a Tony Scott movie marathon. The following is a list my own five favorite Tony Scott films, but please feel free to note your faves below and help celebrate the filmmaker and the legacy he offered filmgoers everywhere.

5. ENEMY OF THE STATE (1998)

In the first of the two Gene Hackman/Tony Scott collaborations on my list, I was pleasantly surprised at how well ENEMY OF THE STATE holds up. The film stars Will Smith who was enjoying fresh success as an action star thanks to INDEPENDENCE DAY, BAD BOYS and MEN IN BLACK. Not only is this an impeccably well directed thriller, it also features an on their way to be star-studded cast including Jack Black, Scott Caan and Jason Lee among others. Filled with nail-biting suspense, ENEMY only continued to show Scotts impressive craftsmanship as an action director.

4. CRIMSON TIDE (1995)

And the Gene Hackman/Tony Scott collaboration continues with this impressive undersea suspense drama. The visuals are extremely remarkable here including some pretty intense submarine action. Along with Scotts visual flair, CRIMSON TIDE offers Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman verbally duking it out. Both actors are at the top of the game, with their performances only amplified by the claustrophobic suspense that builds up to a thrilling climax.

3. THE HUNGER (1983)

THE HUNGER was introduced to me when I was much too young to actually be viewing steamy lesbian lovemaking I was a happy lad! You cant get much more erotic than Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve exploring their sexuality. This stylistic vampire tale also features David Bowie as Deneuves lover and a number of terrifyingly beautiful images. Forget TWILIGHT or The Vampire Diaries, THE HUNGER is an audacious and oftentimes brilliant first feature film from the director.

2. TOP GUN (1986)

I feel the need the need for speed! and so did the entire nation when TOP GUN flew into theatres back in 1986. Three years after THE HUNGER the director went in an entirely new direction and helped solidify Tom Cruise as a box office sensation. Sure looking back there is a certain amount of homoerotism in this Navy pilot adventure, however this high flying flick is as thrilling today as it was back when Mr. Cruise was known as the dude who danced around in his underwear in RISKY BUSINESS. And the soundtrack really rocked!

1.TRUE ROMANCE (1993)

Quentin Tarantino may have written the script for TRUE ROMANCE, yet it was Tony Scotts keen eye for smart casting and outstanding imagery that made this arguably one of the coolest flicks of the Nineties. Val Kilmer as Elvis, Brad Pitt as a stoner and who could forget Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken in one of the greatest scenes ever put on celluloid. To me, this is Scotts true violently romantic masterpiece. And is there any on-screen couple as adorable as Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette were here? I think not.

Extra Tidbit: In honor or this legendary director, which top 5 Tony Scott movies would you watch in your marathon?

Amazing director, not a single bad movie in his filmography, so sad that he choosed to take his own life, even his lesser movies are at least entertaining. I would chose these five movies for a movie marathon:
True Romance
Man On Fire
Deja Vu
The Last Boy Scout
Enemy Of The State

Weirdly enough, I was planning on going back and watching a lot of his films just before his death. While I plan on watching more than 5 (I think I'm just going to watch all of them), I'm saving what I think are his best films for last:
5. Spy Game
4. Crimson Tide
3. Revenge (Director's Cut)
2. Man on Fire
1. True Romance

1. Spy Game - A top-notch espionage spy thriller
2. Deja Vu - The chase scene between Denzel Washington and Jim Caviezel was very innovative
3. Top Gun - "I feel the need - The Need for Speed!!!"
4. Days of Thunder - The climax race between Tom Cruise and Cary Elwes was thrilling.
5. Man on Fire - Denzel Washington at his best. My favorite scene is when Denzel tied up the bad guy to the hood of the car with explosive device up the bad guy's arse. Denzel then walks away and Boom -

1) Enemy of the State (one of my all time favorites)
2) The Taking of Pelham 123 (a TRULY underrated remake, that was just entertaining as all hell)
3) The Fan (another under appreciated movie, but I actually enjoy it better than Taxi Driver, i never felt DeNiro in Taxi Driver was a true Psycho... in The Fan, DeNiro is a fucking psycho! Great movie)
4) Top Gun (Quintisential 80's!)
5) True ROmance (The finale! A Finale he recreated for Enemy of the State!)

I loved all of his movies, in a very true sense. I am an action junkie, I love Michael Bay movies and when it came to action there were only 2: Bay and Tony Scott.. What i loved was that Bay would get shit for having no character development, and Scott made the exact same action movies, but his had a level of intelligence and sophistication to them.

It sucks we wont get another Tony Scott movie, because that style can never be replicated.

For me it would have to be Top Gun, The Last Boy Scout, Enemy of the State, Spy Game, and Man on Fire. Man on Fire is probably my favorite of his. I also have to wonder how Denzel Washington is taking the news of Scott's death, considering how much they worked together.

Excellent selections; I love that you selected Enemy of the State to kick off your marathon: I think it's a slightly under-appreciated gem, a truly kinetic techno-thriller that truly launched Will Smith into the movie star stratosphere, and that was packed with high tech wizardry that does indeed hold up well today. Techno-thrillers tend to date really really fast (The Net, anyone?) yet Scott's masterful direction makes Enemy of the State an enjoyable whirlwind to ride through every single

Ron Howard said it best on Twitter: "tragic day; no more Tony Scott movies."

No other director's death has affected me as much since the death of Stanley Kubrick back in 1999, right around the time I started this site. Both Ridley and Tony Scott's movies have meant so much to me in my life, that it's hard to believe that the brother behind so many of the most energetic and exciting movies of my time, is no longer with us. Also, Tony Scott movies were always films that, on the whole, I could recommend to my parents, as they enjoyed the "fun action thrillers", and he made
