Tron goodies! Five Extended Aspect Ratio IMAX Sequences and a look at Flynn’s Arcade

Director of the upcoming, TRON: LEGACY, Joseph Kosinski revealed that five action sequences from Tron Legacy will be shown in 1.7:1 aspect ratio, exclusively in IMAX Theaters.

What the hell does that mean? It means that you’ll get to see more of the film. Usually when you view a film on an IMAX screen, it doesn’t fill it. You still see those bars at the top and bottom. Christopher Nolan did something similar with THE DARK KNIGHT, except he filmed with IMAX cameras, whereas LEGACY was filmed using Sony CineAlta Fusion 3D cameras. A few sequences from KNIGHT were shot allowing the screen image to switch aspect ratios and fill the entire IMAX screen. So, when you see LEGACY in IMAX, you’ll get a similar experience.

The film will be presented in widescreen, 2.35:1 aspect ratio. But when when you see it in IMAX, five scenes will be rendered at 1.7:1, which means you’ll get more of the picture. If for some reason you’re still not completely getting it, /FILM created a mock-up showing the difference, which you can view here. Also note that the IMAX version will not be zoomed in or cropped.

As for the second half of this news, the still you see at the top of this article is from a forthcoming LEGACY trailer, and was also shown in a scene at Comic-Con. The scene showed Kevin Flynn’s son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) driving his bike to the old Flynn Arcade after receiving a mysterious call from an old disconnected office phone number. Really cool shot in my opinion. Looking forward to this one.
