True Detective writer hints at female detectives for the second season

02.25.2014

Please don't hate me, but I haven't watched any of HBO's TRUE DETECTIVE yet. I keep hearing how amazing it is, but there are only so many hours in the day, and I've been trying to re-watch all eleven seasons of FRASIER. Hey, don't judge. Dr. Frasier Crane is the f*cking man.

A second season of TRUE DETECTIVE hasn't been confirmed by HBO (yet), but many believe another season will happen. But how will the new season be different from the last, besides having a new story and cast members? In an exchange with a fan on Twitter, writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto teased we could be seeing female detectives in the next season.

One of the (few) complaints about TRUE DETECTIVE has been its portrayal of women, and having two female detectives as the leads in the new season might help silence some critics. We know the seasons for HBO's show will be self-contained, so Nic Pizzolatto can really do whatever he wants with the next season.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have both received outstanding reviews for their performances in TRUE DETECTIVE, and if this is true, HBO will have to find two actresses to fill their very big shoes. So the question is, who would you like to see as the new detectives in the next season of TRUE DETECTIVE?

The second-to-last episode of the first season of TRUE DETECTIVE will air on March 2nd, 2014 on HBO.

Please don't force something just because its PC....gonna ruin a good thing. I'm all for women doing exactly what they want and when someone comes along with a fantastic script that they wrote with women in mind or heck idk a woman with a man as her partner...WOW!! BINGO!! but when someone writes that script with that in mind without being forced to do so, that's how you git GOLD....

I think it would be a neat idea to keep the trend of casting this show with good actors who maybe haven't had the best films recently, and give them another chance to shine. Some choices I would go with: Uma Thurman and Famke Janssen.

I'm not sure if I read this somewhere but isn't there some sort of a police rule that says you can't have 2 female detectives/police officers together? They are normally male and female from what I've seen in real life and film.

One is clear

I think it's a pretty good idea. I figured they could go this route at some point. I think Jessica Chastain for me at least is a clear cut choice. She has the toughness and appeal to fit a southern gothic type feel. She would be terrific in picking up where McConaughey and Harrelson leave off. A dream choice as her partner would be Angelina Jolie. I think Jolie needs to do a part like this, she has the chops to pull it off and can fit in with the dark appeal of the show. They may go with a

Who knows though, they'll need to have the same great chemistry hopefully as MM and WH.

I may be in the minority, but I hope one season they take a British route and have Tom Hardy and Idris Elba. I just think to me that would be a fantastic pairing for a season.

Eh, I hope not.

For one thing, when a show is this good they should make a point to piss off the critics even more. And secondly, within the vast history of police work, Detectives have been primarily men...having two women would feel forced IMO...I'd still watch it, but it'd be PC BS that would annoy me.

Well said. I'm all for a lead female don't get me wrong, American Horror isn't American Horror without Jessica Lang. But I don't respect people when they give in to being politically correct. In a small rural country town like the one the show the detectives would be men.

I'd like to see these pairings potentially, if for female detectives:
Streep and Mirren; Bullock and Staunton; Maggie Smith and Sarandon
These guys will end up picking a great pair or group for their cast I'm sure. Looking forward to what these guys have to bring to the table for years to come!

This show rocks but......

I would like to see them re-use the same actors for different parts in the next season like American Horror Story. It won't be the same without Woody and Matthew. It would be American Horror without Jessica Lang which I'm sad to say she will be gone after season 4. The shoes are almost impossible to fill, you would have to have female actors of the highest caliber and not somebody too pretty or familiar with these roles. What made Mathew so good in this role is how different it is from most of

What made Mathew so good in this role is how different it is from most of his work. It reminds me of Frailty a lot. I would be highly against a boring choice like Sandra Bullock, Jessica Biel, Scarlett Jo, or even the lovely Anne Hathaway or someone too young. If I had to pick the two leads for a female detective on this show........I would somone more like Jodie Foster and Charlize Theron combo.

Nah, McConaughey already said on Kimmel that they aren't gonna do the American Horror Story thing. It'd be trying too hard to capture lightning in a bottle again, and we would just be sitting there complaining about "they should have just been Rust & Marty again - I hate their new characters .. yadda yadda".

Tumblr complaining about how misogynistic True Detective is ... they just don't get it.

They can't separate a character's flaws from the show itself. Marty is totally sexist & a chauvinist (they try and lump Rust in there, but he doesn't hate women -- he doesn't care what gender you are or who you are for the matter), but the show doesn't hate women - of course since the leads AREN'T female (and since there isn't a woman on the creative team), the social justice warriors jump to conclusions.

And as for next season, I'm actually betting that it's one man & one woman. Because in

And as for next season, I'm actually betting that it's one man & one woman. Because in an interview, Nic Pizzolato mentions that he's "got HIM", when asked about a new lead to love as much as Rust.

So far my two favorite names I've seen in the comments are Noomi Rapace & Carrie-Anne Moss.

Funny, I was just thinking the other day that it would be interesting if they reversed the genders of the detectives for the next season. Harrelson and McConaughey have set the bar pretty high, as both of their performances have been pretty spellbinding. Having said that, I'll throw Eva Green and Marisa Tomei into the mix as a potential team-up. Both are capable actresses, and I'd love to see them tackle this kind of dark, slow-burn character study.

Seriously, they can cast anyone they want and I'll be there to see what they have for me. This show just rocks.

Older Woman...

I would love to see some older actresses in this. I like the suggestion below of Sigourney Weaver. What about her and Geena Davis. I think there could be a lot said about the aging of a woman, especially tied into a police drama.

As long as they get to a season where......

They can do a 1940-1930's black and white hard boiled detective story than I'm completely down with whatever till they get there.

And as for the female leads go, Halle berry and Angela Bassett. Or some type of Young- Old, Mentor-Student partnership.

She needs to do something like this, follow the footsteps of MM. She showed us a more serious role in Gravity and I think she could be amazing in a show like TD.

I'd love to see them pull an American Horror Story and bring back some of the other cast in different roles. I'm sure McConaughey and Harrelson wouldn't return, but it would be great to see Michelle Monaghan come back in an even meatier role. Besides that I like the ideas everyone else has been spouting out. Especially Melissa Leo and Jessica Chastain. It would also be cool to see Elizabeth Banks in something like this. But know who would be intense and knock it out of the park? Viola Davis

If you think about the arc for Michelle Monaghan's character and the fact that the only other major female roles have been that of dirt poor, abused prostitutes or otherwise well-to-do women who got used for sex by Marty, then the show's marginalization of women is more of a message than an oversight. As for who should be the female detectives if that is indeed how it goes down? It depends on the type of characters they want to portray, the story they want to tell next season. My completely

The portrayal of women in this show is the point. A clear recurring theme is Hart's possessive, chauvinistic attitude towards all women, from his wife to his daughters to his mistresses to even witnesses and suspects. Cohle almost systematically rejects and ignores any and all women who enter his life. Along with a broader society that ignores and minimizes women, and in pursuance of a brutal killer whose victims are almost all women. The show is making a statement condemning all of it.

I suspect its building to something big in the last two episodes. I'm pretty sure I've figured out who the "Yellow King" is (read the Robert Chambers short story "The Yellow Sign" which Yellow King references for a pretty big hint) but there's definitely a larger dynamic at play beyond the identity of the killer.

Criticisms of sexism are unfounded

Yes, women are often marginalized during the course of this show - but it's not something that held up as admirable. The two main leads are fractured and horrible each in their own way. The men with power in this show are mostly portrayed monsters, and women are portrayed as victims. That said, the role reversal in last Sunday's episode actually left Rusty somewhat victimized, and a woman using him in a pretty monstrous way herself.

There is definitely some standard HBO titillation on this

There is definitely some standard HBO titillation on this show, but that's almost a criticism to be levied at HBO in general. On this show, at least it makes sense. Considering the graphic nature of everything in this show, it would be weird to shy away from Marty's infidelities. And it's Southern Gothic - it's supposed to be titillating and steamy.

But overall - I'm indifferent to having female detective leads. What's important to me is that Nic Pizzolatto takes full advantage of the anthology format to have a powerful self-contained story that isn't beholden to cast contract renewals, and that next season is as good as season one has been. So far, there's no reason to doubt that - and if Nic is enthusiastic and chatty about next season, that's a good thing in my book.

If you're looking for my vote, I'd say stay away from your typical A-list eye candy, and go for some actresses who are middle-aged and actually look tough. Like Melissa Leo and Margo Martindale.

Can't we just have McConaughey and Harrelson in female wigs? Bosom Buddies style!

But seriously, I like the idea of female detectives this time around and whoever they cast have some big shoes to fill. Maybe for one of the detectives, how about Jessica Chastain?
