Turtle Power! Raphael has been cast for Michael Bay's Ninja Turtles

Mar. 22, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Alan Ritchson, former Aquaman and future co-star in THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE, has joined the Michael Bay produced Ninja Turtles as the sai-wielding, hot-tempered, red-bandanna wearing Raphael.  The Jonathan Liebesman directed pic already has Megan Fox cast as April O'Neil and is now waiting to fill three more shells; Leondardo, Michaelangelo, and Donatello.  I know quite a few people would like to see Corey Feldman reprise his role as Donatello, but he'd have to be well-prepared for some mo-cap suit action if that were the case, as it would be much more work than standing in front of a mic.  Ritchson is obviously an actor who can meet the physical demands; but I'm not sure about the actual performance part.

There's plenty of controversy surrounding NINJA TURTLES, from the early script leak rumors, budgetary concerns, and of course the casting of Megan Fox.  I think this one will be plagued from start to finish, honestly, but guess what?  I'll be there opening weekend, as I suspect many Turtle fans will be.  I still think it's a little early to call it and remain cautiously optimistic.

NINJA TURTLES is slated for release on June 6, 2014.

This is relevant to the story, right?

If not, this is for sure...

Extra Tidbit: All right, folks. Let's hear your choices for the rest of the crew!

Why would they insist on actors doing both the mo-cap AND voice acting?

Can't wait for the scene where Michael Bay r@pe$ all the turtles one-by-one while forcing Splinter to eat his a$$. Marking this one in my calendar!

I liked him in Smallville. I guess he has the voice chops for Raphael.

Raphael is my favorite turtle so I hope he does the character well.

"I'll be there opening weekend, as I suspect many Turtle fans will be"

Right then. This is your fault.

Your fault that Bay got and is STILL making Transformers. Your fault that Bay and Platinum Dunes now has Ninja Turtles. You are the class of people willing to give him "the benefit of the doubt", even though neither he, Platinum Dunes or Jonathan Liebesman have actually earned that, and you are willing to pay this shit production company your hard earned money to continually destroy the things we love. It will be your fault when we get fucking awful Platinum

Thanks mate. Cheers.

*sigh* "They were never intended to be anything more than that, either. They're big, dumb, action films." Again, you have the wrong attitude and wrong way of looking at things. It's again because of people that think like this that they keep making shit movies. Because, you know what, thos "big dumb action films" that were never intended to be anything more could have maybe been "big dumb but GOOD action films". The perfect example being Avengers. Made by the right people with the best of

I'm 100% with Guy on this one. It's people with an attitude like yours Paul that in the end we get bad movies, made by the wrong people with the wrong casts and dodgy special effects. If more of actually didn't give those movies our money they would, eventually, stop making them. We have to stop giving them chances or as Guy says "the benefit of the doubt". After 3 Transformers and what, even if it's not much so far, we have heard from Ninja Turtles you should know better by now.

Box Office was my argument in the first place. The reason this company continues to make money to buy these franchises in the first place is because of people like yourself. People who have already sold themselves a ticket simply because someone put the right title on the poster (not that they've even done that, having changed it to Ninja Turtles). The reason they're still working is due to people giving them the benefit of the doubt, and remaining optimistic about their upcoming movies even

People who have already sold themselves a ticket simply because someone put the right title on the poster (not that they've even done that, having changed it to Ninja Turtles). The reason they're still working is due to people giving them the benefit of the doubt, and remaining optimistic about their upcoming movies even though they have a relatable history of awful cinematic turds left in their wake. It's utterly mind boggling. At what point do we, the fans, stop and see the pattern? Sure a younger crowd will probably love Transformers because of the whizz-bangs and flashy lights, but the younger crowd loved Avengers also, which had all of the same features PLUS competent direction and editing as well as genuine heart, humour, story and intelligence. Everybody wins.

It wouldn't be an issue if the company were making their own awful original movies, but when they start buying up the stuff we love, taking away the opportunity for a genuinely good adaptation so that they can rub their brand of shit all over it, there has to be a point where we stop looking at what it "might" be and start looking at what things actually are.

I guarantee you the only reason nobody else is adapting the Turtles isn't because other companies don't want to, it's because Platinum Dunes had more money to spend. Money from the revenue of those other abortions that people kept giving chance, after chance, after chance based solely on the title of the brand on the poster. You can't stand there and say "well this is what we're getting" because as long as we continue to give these guys money for buying the right franchise names then it's all we'll ever be getting. The reason it's not "J.J Abrams, or Guillermo Del Toro" is because of blind support of awful film-makers.

Why settle for Batman and Robin when we could aim for The Dark Knight?

I certainly can't dispute the story issues that Bay has had in the past, but I do count some of his films as a lot of fun. The Rock, Bad Boys, even the first Transformers, were all a blast. They were never intended to be anything more than that, either. They're big, dumb, action films. And, if they were so lacking and terrible, then there sure as hell wouldn't be that kind of box office. There's a reason Bay and co. are still working and it's because people are going to see them. And, you can try and write that off as just a bunch of idiots going to watch them, but if that were the case, why do so many of the "informed" moviewatchers know the films so well? Because they went and saw them (and more than likely, so did you).

Could someone else make a better Turtles film? Sure. I have no doubt. But, they're not. So, looking at what we have, I'm optimistic to see where it goes. A first trailer will be very telling. Either way, as a fan of the Turtles, from the cartoons to the comics to the movies, I'm happy to see them return to the big screen, even if it's not J.J. Abrams or Guillermo Del Toro directing with the cast of Serenity starring in it. I'll give it a go.

I can say they are destroying something because Bay, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman have not made a film between them that could even begin to sway me that they might make a movie worth watching, let alone a movie worth watching about a franchise and characters I enjoy. It's about a production company with a track record for not only making nothing but utterly awful "original movies" (Battle: Los Angeles anyone? The Unborn? The Island? Pearl Habour? Amityville re-make? Hitcher re-make?

It's about a production company with a track record for not only making nothing but utterly awful "original movies" (Battle: Los Angeles anyone? The Unborn? The Island? Pearl Habour? Amityville re-make? Hitcher re-make? Wrath of the Titans?), but also buying existing be-loved franchises and then making complete joyless cinematic trash with them. I'm thinking Nightmare on Elm Street, I'm thinking Friday the 13th, I'm thinking Texas Chainsaw, I'm thinking Transformers, and now TMNT.

This has nothing to do with adapting the existing stories to a tee either, it has everything to do with the people behind it being completely deficient filmmakers, from script through to screen they are just awful. The problem with this movie isn't that they may change an origin, or call a character by a different name, the problem with this movie is that these people don't know how to write, cast, shoot or edit a fluid, emotional or engaging motion picture.

Nostalgia doesn't play a part in the argument other than the fact that these characters join Transformers in an older property being bought by hacks. Going on Turtles alone, the eighties cartoon isn't even my favourite incarnation. I much prefer the original eighties comics, the current run of IDW comics, the first movie (90's), the Turtles Forever movie (2009), or the current run of cartoons on Nickelodeon.

The eighties cartoon was great when I was a kid, but doesn't play as well to me as an older audience. Neither however is it fair to say that this isn't aimed at me, but at kids, and so I shouldn't expect something intelligent. Pixar movies are aimed at kids also, but it doesn't mean they are loud, crass, joyless and dumb for the adults who wanted to see them. Especially considering the reason these companies buy these 80's franchises in the first place is because we already identify with them as an audience, that we grew up with them and are supposedly easier to sway into a ticket purchase because of it.

However, for me It's not about sticking to an established format, or playing on fond memories. It's about great storytellers telling great stories. These guys are not great storytellers. Not even competent ones. Infact, they are legitimately known in the industry for being reliably awful ones. You'd have purposely ignore more than a decade's worth of constantly terrible movies from these guys to even hold out the smallest glimmer of hope for this one, let alone already decide you will "be there on opening day".

Yes, as I am part of the production, I take full blame.

How can you say that they are destroying something you love when you haven't even seen it yet? Makes zero sense, man.

I'm thinking there's no version of any '80's property that would ever satiate you and that's the problem when fans get so wrapped up in the nostalgia of these childhood things (I know, because I get wrapped in it, too). Have you watched the old Masters of the Universe cartoon recently? It's fucking awful. If

And if Bay, Liebesman, or Platinum Dunes didn't, as you say, "earn" the property (was there a test or something?) then who did?

There's a certain level of creativity and style needed to adapt a 22-minute cartoon made specifically to sell toys. Maybe you should give them a shot or just stick to the TMNT cartoon boxed set from the '90's.

I'm gonna hold of on this one

I've always been a huge turtles fan, I still remember when I got the technodrome as a birthday gift and jumping up and down when I was like 5, and while I cant really hate on this casting yet as I've only seen Alan on Smallville and thought he did a good job, I fucking hate megan fox, and think she will kill the character of April, lets face it the girl is good looking but she really cant act because if she could she would be carrying her own movies by now. I think Michael Bay can do a good

I think Michael Bay can do a good job with it (althought im not a fan of taking out the teenage mutant and making them aliens, and he has put out some pretty bad movies like transformers 2, the friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street remakes but this is still the guy who gave us bad boys 1 and 2 armegadon and the rock...plus pain and gain looks good) but after TMNT i'll wait for the dvd, 2014 has more movies i'll pay to see before this one

selfish obnoxious post, just thumbs me down now

I know the guy who performed in the Donatello suit! He's extremely cool - he acted in a short film I made a few years ago. Whenever he flubbed a line I'd say, "Don't worry, we'll just get Corey Feldman to dub over it." ...probably drove him crazy :P

He's kind of a private guy so I'll refrain from saying his name here (even though it is the 21st century and his name is surely only a click or two away), but it wasn't either of those two. I believe he was only in the suit for Turtles in Time . Still, though!

Dammit. I want this movie so hard, but dammit.
Every time I see a picture of Megan Fox on this site, I think "Well...maybe? I mean, everybody deserves a second chance right?" And then I realize it's just the denial stage of grief.

No. No. No and no. And what's more? "but guess what? I'll be there opening weekend, as I suspect many Turtle fans will be" Way to go Paul... No wonder they keep making badly made movies...
I know some will say, don't judge a book by it's cover, but in some cases you can. And the Ninja Turtles is one of them.

I think...

They should get Doug Jones and Andy Serkis to play two turtles each. Then maybe Ken Watanabe as Splinter. And make Meg Fox an extra (with no lines) and cast anyone else as April.
