TV cancellations round-up: Agent Carter, The Muppets, Castle & more

05.13.2016

Marvel's Agent Carter The Muppets Castle Banner

It seems yesterday was the start of spring cleaning for ABC, CBS, FOX and The CW. The broadcasters cancelled a total of 12 series, and there will likely be more cancellations in the next few days as we get closer to next week’s fall presentations.

We'll start with ABC, who has cancelled Marvel's Agent Carter after two seasons. The network also said goodbye to Castle, Nashville and Galavant, and freshman series The Muppets and The Family. In addition to the cancellations, ABC has also announced that they won't be moving forward with the planned Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff Marvel's Most Wanted.

CBS pulled the plug on its last remaining CSI series, CSI: Cyber, while The CW (the new home of Supergirl) has axed Containment after just one season.

Yesterday was particularly rough for FOX's rookie comedies: The Grinder, Grandfathered, Bordertown and Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life have all been canned after just a single season. Which cancelled series are you going to miss the most?

I gave up on Agent Carter fairly early in season 2 - it just seemed to lose the appeal of the first season and the ongoing villain arc just seemed a little uninspired.
I wanted to enjoy The Muppets but I just couldn't get into the format. It was more relationship drama than actual funny stuff.
To be honest there's a ton of good shows out there and only so many hours I can spend watching tv so plenty of potentially decent shows don't make the cut of stuff I actually stick with.

Too bad about the Muppets...

I'm only into 3 episodes of the Muppets, and I am pretty disappointed with the direction they went. The Office theme has been played out, and never really worked for me when that series was on air. I was so looking forward to a new Muppets, but was horrified when I heard about the theme they chose. I've heard that they re-tooled it towards the middle of the season, based on negative feedback, so I will see how it plays out. I just wish they had the insight to understand the mistake they were

wow

Started working at home! It is by far the best job I have ever had. I just recently purchased a Brand new BMW since getting a check for $24491 this 8-week past. I began this 6 months ago and I am now bringing home at least $120 per hour. I work through this link. Go here... www.earnmore9.com

I only watched 3 of those.

1) I wasn't impressed with AGENT CARTER, but the 2nd half of season 2 improved a lot. In the end, we have to look at its impact on the M.C.U. We already know what happens with PEGGY; we didn't need to see the details. As for the cliffhanger... That character was pretty much irrelevant. Experts predicted the show would be cancelled due to rating and to give room for MOST WANTED... but they passed on it too? Weird. I'm glad though. BOBBI & HUNTER are good secondary characters, but they can't

2) I wasn't offended by the edgier humour in THE MUPPETS. In terms of funny, it was hit-or-miss. I admit I became invested in the relationship drama. Characters like these are a brand that can be attached to anything. In some of their movies, the genre formula feels different thanks to their addition. This show was just another mockumentary workplace sitcom that happened to have MUPPETS.

3) I hated the 1st season of NASHVILLE. Seasons 2 & 3 were a guilty pleasure. I've yet to see season 4. Like most soap operas, I'll forget about it very soon, but I'll keep some of the songs on my iPod.

Honestly not surprised by some of these:
(1) I feel that Castle and Nashville both had a decent run on TV. I never watched either, but I know both had their fans. So hopefully both series get wrapped up nicely for their respective fans. As for all Nathan Fillion fans, don't worry, that guy always bounces back. He'll be on another show in a year or so. Maybe he'll go the full sit-com route.

(2) The Grinder, Grandfathered, Bordertown and Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life - Never

(2) The Grinder, Grandfathered, Bordertown and Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life - Never heard of any of these shows, so they will most definitely NOT be missed. And frankly, Fox is so hit or miss with it's original programming. As long as Brooklyn 99 and Last Man on Earth remain on TV, I'm fine.

(3) The Muppets I've heard so many mixed reviews that I'm not surprised it got cancelled. Even low-rated shows can survive the bubble if they can get consistent ratings. This show just didn't stand a chance. No offense to those who enjoyed it.

(4) Marvel - I hate to say it, but I'm not surprised at Agent Carter's cancellation. Marvel's TV bread and butter exists on Netflix because they're able to (1) introduce actual superheroes in a relatively plausible way, (2) they're able to introduce actual villains, in a relatively plausible way, and (3) those stories actually make sense when put into the larger scheme of the MCU. Unfortunately, the ABC shows just never jived when they put them into the context of the rest of the MCU. They spend/spent so much time trying to be connected to the movies, but without the acknowledgement in the movies, it rendered each season pointless or ridiculous. I know Agent Carter was more of a prequel to the MCU, but even still, there's only so much they could do with that premise, which in turn made the show very limited. And I'm glad the idea for Marvel's Most Wanted got canned, the premise just sounds like a smaller scope of SHIELD and would suffer from the same issues as the r est of the ABC shows.

Ok, rant over. Looking forward to hearing about the new stuff these networks plan to put out next year. I know most of it will be garbage, but still....

Very surprised

I'm surprised that they pulled the plug on Agent Carter because ABC seemed like they would stay fast to their Marvel TV properties. Glad at the news of Supergirl making the move to CW now they can all be under the same happy umbrella. I'd say I'm most upset about The Grinder and Grandfathered because they were hilarious shows that may have benefited from a different time slot. Also, maybe Netflix can pull Agent Carter back from the dead.

Fox fucking SUCKS

I knew from the moment they were announced that EVERY ONE of those shows on Fox would be cancelled. I am a bit upset over The Muppets though, but it was just a shitty format and they lied to us about having sketches and a return of Pigs In Spaaaace. I'm glad there are no plans for Marvels Most Wanted because it would have been shitty and full of no-name villains because they are too big of pussies to introduce known villains on the TV show.

What happened to her character in Civil War somehow feels like it telegraphed Agent Carter's cancellation, doesn't it? Out of the shows mentioned, Galavant is easily my favorite. And unlike Agent Carter, which I never really cared for, I'm glad we got at least two short season of the show's musical hilarity and nonsense.

Noooooooooooo

The only to network TV series that I cared about at all both got cancelled (Agent Carter, The Muppets). Agent Carter Season 2 wasn't as good as Season 1, but I was really holding an outsider chance that if the series went on they'd start to flesh it out with other characters from Marvel's Golden Age (The original Human Torch, Sub-Mariner, Ka-Zar and the Savage Lands, etc.), I felt like The Muppets was just trying to find its footing the first season and had an awesome premise to work with.

Can they even use the Human Torch name? But yeah, it would have been cool to have the Invaders on the show. Heck, an Invaders tv show would have been awesome.

It would of also been cool to see Agent Carter team up with the Hank Pym version of ant-man.

Season 2 of carter sucked, am not surprised

I loved the first season but season 2 was an utter waste of the character and plot, we got no further into the development of Shield or the progression of that era, it was pointless, like the writers just said, 'oh well just put her in Hollywood and thats good enough'. Still am not happy it wont get a chance to redeem itself, Atwell and the subject are great.

It SUCKS that Agent Carter got canceled. It was my favorite comic book show on television next to Daredevil and loved that it was a time period comic book show as well. Atwell was absolute perfection every episode and it sucks that we won't be able see anymore progression of her character or Cooper's Howard Stark or the formation of SHIELD unless they somehow keep doing flashbacks in the MCU films or perhaps they make a Agent Carter film to tie up loose ends. Or if we're lucky enough, hopefully

Or if we're lucky enough, hopefully Netflix can pick this up and just have it with all of other Marvel's television shows.

I'm just pissed that it ended on a damn cliffhanger, and that there was so MUCH more this show could have done in terms of storytelling like creating Shield and perhaps tieing into the events of Civil War in showing more of the history of the five other super soldiers.

I don't think the loose ends in AGENT CARTER are directly tied to the M.C.U., so they wouldn't be used in flashbacks in the movies. Maybe in AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Damn it! I really liked Agent Carter. It's one of the few network series I've watched over the past couple of years. Here's hoping Hayley Atwell gets another great role soon.

Lol, well you're in luck. In the very same breath with which they cancelled Agent Carter, ABC also announced that they're picking up a pilot starring Hayley Atwell to series for the fall season. It's called Conviction, it also stars X-Men's Shawn Ashmore and The Walking Dead's Emily Kinney, and it's about "Carter Morrison, the brilliant but ne'er-do-well daughter of a former president, who is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles' newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. Well, I'm not sure if this will qualify as a great role but at least I'll get my Atwell fix this fall.
