TV Review: Game of Thrones, Season 6, Episode 2 "Home"

05.01.2016

NOTE: Join us every MONDAY as we review the latest episode...

EPISODE 2: Home

THE PLOT : The long summer is at an end, winter truly is coming and with it the cold winds of war as five self proclaimed Kings claim dominance over Westeros, but there can be only one winner when you play the game of thrones.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode). Episode one was a bit of a slow burn, and opening couple moves on the chess board, but tonight kicked everything into high gear baby! JON SNOW IS ALIVE BITCHES! Itís funny, everyone attached to the showís been all like ĎJon Snowís dead, dumbasses, you saw it yourselfí, but the second I heard they werenít giving out screeners this year, I knew that had to be the reason. Nobody wanted the grand reveal spoiled, and letís be honest, it wouldíve been so good on you team HBO. I was on eggshells the whole time though, thereís that tiny voice in my head saying Ďwhat if he really is deadí, well that voice can f*ck off, because my favorite character is back and shitís about to get wild!

Okay (deep breath), now that THATís covered, letís get into the rest of the episode, because lots more went down. Letís start with Kingís Landing. First, I loved Franken-mountain smashing dudeís skull in for telling the wrong story, I laughed for about five minutes. You f*ck with Cersei, he kills you. You talk about Cersei, he kills you. You breathe inappropriately, he kills you. Best. Bodyguard. Ever. We got another Cersei in mourning scene with Tommen, and I didnít mind it, because again, the tears are about gone and rage will follow. Enough rage to burn down the joint, Iím sure. Thatís when things are going to get interesting. Of course, Jaimeís conversation with The High Sparrow was entertaining as well. I knew he wouldnít kill him, not right now, but his days are numbered and Jaime certainly let him know as much. Looking forward to that little weasel Lancel getting his face crushed too.

No Dany tonight, but Tyrion sure had his moment to shine with the dragons. I loved the (you got THIS, Tyrion) look on Varysí face as he stood by the entrance. Canít say I blame him. Sansa shared a moment of revelation with Brienne, and Theon decides to go home (that ought to be good). Aria gets the shit beat out of her (again), but thank Christ Jaqen Híghar finally shows up to end all that nonsense. And speaking of people showing up at the right time, Tormund and the wildlings show up just in time to help Davos protect Jonís body. That was a great scene too, mainly because I really like Tormund, heís a cool character and Iím pumped to see him and Jon Snow fighting side by side again.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 6ís second episode gave a great character back to us, but they took some key players in the process. Roose Bolton (who Iím not shedding any tears over) getting shanked by Ramsay isnít something I saw coming, but it sure as hell doesnít surprise me either. But damn, bro, feeding the baby and her mother to the dogs? You cold as ice. Iím calling it right now, Jon vs. Ramsay, make that shit happen! Meanwhile, Theonís dad gets thrown off the ricketiest bridge Iíve ever seen (seriously, I wouldnít set foot on that damn thing on the brightest day, let alone in a damn storm) by his brother, implying that thereís still big things coming out of the Iron Islands at some point. Lastly, we welcome Bran back (yayÖsort of). Although the flashback was cool and all, like Meera said, they gots to get out of that cave. I wonít harp on him too much though, because that clip from the trailer with him and white walker king looks hella badass.

SEX/NUDITY: No crusty old witches tonight, you sick bastards.

VIOLENCE: The violence itself was sparse (but good), but the promise of great violence is definitely in the air. That said, we got some stabbing, bridge tossing and a fantastic face crush.

MOST EPIC SCENE: JON SNOW, JON SNOW, JON SNOW. Yes, Iím still very excited.

FINAL VERDICT :

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: Iím now more than curious to see who the Ironborn side with.

Good episode but....

The reviving of khal drogo didnt work out so well for him so i' m not totally convinced he's back yet. Atleast not as his normal self.

Yeah my fiancee and I were having a conversation about this. However much we wanted to see John Snow back, we were curious that it would appear to be the most obvious direction - very un-Game of Thrones. We thought the same thing as you. They still have time to subvert our expectations. He only opened his eyes after all.

Different magic though, right? When Khal Drogo was resurrected it was some weird Eastern magic that did it. And the lady never restored his soul, just his body. We've seen the Red Priests resurrect the dead before (Baric Dondarrion in season 3 or 4). And those people are fully resurrected, body and soul, albeit they maintain the scars of their death. So from what I gather, it was Melisandre who resurrected him, so I would assume he's back, body and soul.

I think the catch is this

I think the catch is this though. It's not Jon Snow's soul that came back. I think he's been resurrected as Azor Ahai. Perhaps with Jon's memories, etc. But he has Azor Ahai's purpose to destroy the Whitewalkers and bring peace to Westeros.

Great episode. Agree about Tyrion's scene with the dragons, best part of the episode. Could be an awesome spin-off series: Tyrion flying around on dragons, drinking and knowing things.

Tyrion's scene with the Dragons was awesome. That might be leading off to some awesome story line.

I'm fully convinced based on both books and that scene, that when Dany eventually goes to Westeros, Tyrion will be on of her Dragon Riders.

New favorite episode

There may have been more exciting episodes in the past, but I believe this is my new favorite. I can't wait to watch everything play out. Very satisfying episode all around - other than Ramsay still being alive. All in good time.

Tyrion may be the bravest soul on the entire show.

Great Episode. Loved when the big dude (sorry, I don't know his name) smashed the shit talkers head against the wall. I laughed pretty hard Also, I hope Ramsay Bolton dies horribly. A whole episode dedicated to him being tortured would be nice

That would be an episode I would rewatch repeatedly. Put him through what he put Theon through, one limb at a time, starting with his most valued.

Dim the lights, hand me some popcorn and let's enjoy the show.

It's only good if it's Sansa or Theon that gets to torture him. Perhaps that will be Sansa's first order of business when she takes over Winterfell.

My favorite moment of the episode...

While I was standing up yelling and cheering when Jon took his first breaths again, there was a moment not even mentioned in your recap that had me laughing, smiling, doing I don't know what even more.

When Wun Wun decided to smash that Nightswatch archer against the wall. I lost it when that happened.

Was hoping Snow prince

I like that they followed expectations. There's a satisfaction in that. But, I feel like we are in a huge reveal stage portion of the show. No more slow burn. Now it's Mach 3 to act 3.

I knew it!

I knew Jon Snow wasn't dead! And I never thought anyone could be worse than King Joffery, but holy shit Ramsay is horrible.

I wouldn't say he was worse, certainly capable of similiar evils, but Joffrey will always hold a special place in my heart as the most hated fuck on tv!

As horrible as Joffrey was,, I think Ramsay is a lot worse. He's more sadistic for sure.

Joffrey' s a coward...Ramsay isn't...it'll make him a better baddie overall and his eventual death all the more satisfying.

Anyone else get a 'Mr. Burns'-ish vibe from Ramsay Bolton?

"Smithers...RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!!"

Just 1 Complaint

My only complaint is that it was a bit too easy to bring Jon Snow back. I was expecting them to put him on the pyre (after Melisandre seemingly fails), only for him to revive and walk out of the flames.

:) gave away a hint of a fan theory that I don't know if everybody knows or not - so I deleted.

Considering the prevailing theory that he's really a Targaryen, that would have been an awesome way to bring him back and confirm his heritage.

Not having read the book so apologies in advance...but I was under the impression that fire doesn't harm a Targaryen - it won't bring a Targaryen back, if he's already dead.
