EPISODE 6: Always Accountable

THE HOOK: An ambush from unknown enemies forces Daryl into the woods and Abraham and Sasha into an abandoned town, where both parties face deadly obstacles.

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode

THE LOWDOWN: As it turns out, the first eight episodes of this season are going to be completely connected to the big incident involving the walker roundup and The Wolves attack on Alexandria. I have no problem with this, and judging by tonight’s episode, which focuses on Sasha, Daryl and Abraham, next week should find all our characters in Alexandria dealing with the sea of walkers at the door and learning of Glenn’s fate by mid-season finale (a little drawn out, but whatever). Again, I’m not complaining. This season has been tight thus far, and at the very least, we get Daryl and Abraham tonight, two of my favorite characters. Sure, they didn’t do much, but it was still entertaining. That said, it seems like there’s a whole lot of enemies running around, who only seem to cross paths with our group by ‘accident’. Funny how that works.

The Abraham and Sasha dynamic is a mixed bag, because, basically Sasha is a mixed bag. Like Abraham, I enjoy her no bullshit, calling it like it is attitude, but she’s a hard girl to root for as she’s not exactly likeable at this point. At least pairing her with Abraham got him straightened out, because holy shit, dude was losing it. That said, I also enjoy crazy-ass Abraham. The scene with him on the bridge was gold, and not just because he scored some stogies and a rocket launcher (a rocket launcher in Abraham’s hands can only lead to pure awesomeness), but he seriously needed to get his head straight. I think part of it was because they found a soldier’s house to hideout in (who had a family much like his), but deep down Abraham knows he has a place at Rick’s table and that it’s a future worth fighting for. I did cringe a bit at the realization of all this, as most times when characters conquer their demons, it’s right about the time they die a horrible death. Thankfully, that didn’t happen.

Daryl’s sojourn was the most interesting by far, as he crosses paths with (I’m assuming) The Saviors, yet another renegade group from the comics. They aren’t Wolves, and I don’t think they’re Neegan’s crew either, so The Saviors are my guess. Now, a trio seems to have stolen from the larger group and are trying to move on when they cross paths with Daryl, knock him out and take him prisoner. I liked that they seem to be good people, and I liked that Daryl (after escaping) goes back to return the insulin that the younger girl needed (which was no doubt what they stole). Daryl saves them from an ambush, and it feels like they have a connection. Yay, we’re all friends again! Sigh. It never works out that way Daryl, so why did you think it would this time? It’s also worth mentioning that during the ambush, one of The Saviors gets bit, but is smart enough to amputate the arm right away. These guys seem much smarter than The Wolves, which does not bode well for our group.

The Walking Dead Season 6’s sixth episode dives headlong back into the thick of things with a new enemy and a couple hurtles for our three characters to overcome. The action wasn’t as heavy as I thought it would be, considering. I mean, these guys tried to ambush everyone at the beginning, took some hits, and vanished. They come after the three runaways in the forest, armed to the teeth and in numbers, but one dude gets bit and they call it off. I know I said these guys are smart, but for smart villains with lots of crew and guns, they’re not exactly bringing the pain. Insulin chick getting chomped was her own fault, I didn’t feel for her in the least, but what did make me angry is how Daryl opened up to the other two, asked them the questions and offered to take them in, only to get robbed for his effort. Heads up you two, he can part with the motorcycle, but for taking his crossbow the penalty will be death. You don’t f*ck with Daryl’s crossbow! Next week we’re back in Alexandria, and a shit ton of walkers.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Abraham’s rocket launcher walker was the only memorable kill, but whether or not it was Abraham or the ground that killed him is debatable.

BLOOD AND GORE: There were some nasty looking zombies on the prowl tonight, but other than one of our escapees getting neck chomped, it wasn’t all that gory.

COOLEST SCENE: Abraham’s meltdown on the bridge was a pretty intense/cool moment. I’m just glad he got his shit together. Oh, and them’s some fancy new duds ya got there bro!
