TV Review: This Week on Game of Thrones (S4 Episode 7/ May 18, 2014)

May. 18, 2014by: J.A. Hamilton

NOTE: Join us every MONDAY as we review the latest episode...

EPISODE 7: Mockingbird

THE PLOT : The long summer is at an end, winter truly is coming and with it the cold winds of war as five self proclaimed Kings claim dominance over Westeros, but there can be only one winner when you play the game of thrones.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode). On the heels of last weeks epic speech, we open with a, less than impressed Jaime, telling Tyrion how big a fool he is for sealing his own fate. The cool thing here is that Tyrion sees through it all, realizing his fathers true intentions plain as day. I like that, but I cant say I blame the guy for losing it in the moment because of Shae. Tyrion does seem a bit surprised when Jaime explains that his sword game isnt enough to cut it as champion, though I would have thought hed have someone else in mind. His meeting with Bronn was gut-wrenching. I mean hell, I wouldnt want to fight the damn mountain either, so I cant question Bronns logicself-preservation after all is as good an excuse as any. Tyrion understands, and clearly theres a mutual respect between these men, which makes it all the harder to watch that final handshake.

Ive been disappointed with the lack of Arya this season, especially after such a solid introduction to the season via the first episode, but thankfully tonight felt like a worthy installment for her and The Hound. I loved hearing Arya say her real name with pride, and although it felt like a bit of a convenient coincidence, her getting the chance to dance with an old friend felt unbelievably satisfying. It was also nice to see her relationship with The Hound revert back to equal respects. These two characters are a solid pairing and just work well together. Having the Hound open up to her, and then her help clean his wound just feels right. Im rooting for the both of them at this point.

Jons return to Castle Black was about as cold as youd expect, but realistically, theres not much more to tell on that front (cough, cough, FILLER). Dany and Daario get it onor at least thats what were led to believe, as if they did, it happened off screen. I did however, enjoy her exchange with Jorah, who always has the right advice when it comes to battle. Melisandre makes an appearance, if for no other reason, than to show us how epic her rack still is. Now dont get me wrong, Im not complaining in the least, shes beyond hot, but her exchange with Stannis bonkers-ass wife just seemed a bit like a boobie filling quotaagain, not that Im complaining. Id gladly give her a sponge bath as we gaze into the Lord of Lights fire.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON FOUR's seventh episode re-confirms my delight for this seasons ability to balance the pieces on the table, giving us more of what we want, when we want it. Take Pod and Brienne for example, not a huge scene, but one that not only counts (sweet bread making Hotpie!), but makes us nod our heads in anticipation. I absolutely loved the scene with Oberyn and Tyrion. Having read the books, I knew what was coming, but like many great scenes that came before it (the scene where the cutthroat comes to murder Bran and gets chomped by Summer comes to mind), I still found myself wide-eyed and grinning with each passing second. Lastly, we go to poor Sansa in Crazy-Town. Seeing her Imp-slap Robin was worth the price of admission in itself, but where it goes from there was absolutely nuts. Littlefinger sent that crazy bitch Lysa flying, and Im sure her son wont be far behind. Of course, with all excitement, one might find it easy to overlook Littlefinger kissing Sansa, which wasdisturbing to say the least. Three episodes left.

SEX/NUDITY: Dany and Daario may have got it onbut I guess well never know. Melisandres rack, however, could make even the harshest non-believer turn to the light. And Im trying to forget the Littlefinger/Sansa kiss happened.

VIOLENCE: The Mountain makes a bloody appearance, hacking and slashing dudes to ribbons, The Hound ends up with a nasty neck bite, Robin gets the shit slapped out of him, and Lysa, well, I hope she had a red bull because shell be needing wings.

SHARPEST QUIP: : There wasnt much that stood out tonight, but I rather enjoyed Cersis exchange with The Mountain. Who am I fighting, he says. Cersi smiles and responds, Does it matter? True that.

MOST EPIC SCENE: For me, it was the meeting between Tyrion and Oberyn. The passion shared between these two men as Tyrion learns just how far back his sisters hatred goes, only to be given a strand of hope when Oberyn declares hell be Tyrions champion. The look on Tyrions face says it all.

FINAL VERDICT :

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Loved the ep

Arya doesn't get the praise she deserves. Have you noticed that all her scenes regardless of who she's paired with are instant classics. My one pet peeve is the mountain. While huge he is just too.. clean... He should be a bit scarred. With as much death and destruction that he causes you would think he'd have a nick or two. Small pet peeve but none the less...

Yah having changed the actor for the Mountain I think three times now they really kind of failed, the first guy had it pegged, big grizzly bearded, battle scared and scary, this guys is more WWE slick and clean...bah nothing is slick and clean in George RR's universe.

Another solid episode

The scene that I was impressed with that no one else below has mentioned yet, was actually the one with Daenerys. While her plot line has gotten very slow at times, she is still extremely smart and powerful and shows it here. I don't know what happened between her and Daario, but my guess is that whatever it was, it was basically buying his loyalty and agreement to take back Yunkai for her. Then, through her conversation with Jorah, she is able to convince him that he is still most important to

Then, through her conversation with Jorah, she is able to convince him that he is still most important to her. "No, tell him that you changed it". Well done. If she ever gets her sexy butt to Westeros, it's gonna take an act of one of the gods to stop her.

Another very strong episode and it's satisfying seeing these big events from the third book play out on screen. I replayed Lysa getting hers several times, you can even see her go splat if you look closely.

Good episode, of course, but these past couple have seemed to be filled with mild story development and a key point each episode. I feel like everything is just a continuous building to the finale couple of episodes, hopefully starting with the next one, but I was mostly uninterested in a lot of what happened this episode. Don't get me wrong, it remained in line with the quality of the show and the acting was entertaining, but it almost felt like business as usual in Westeros. I feel like I'm

I feel like I'm waiting for all the really big things to happen, and with Tyrion's main event coming next week with the battle, it will be nice to see some big events happen this season. Though, I must say that the capper to tonights episode was very pleasantly surprising. Lord Baelish may be an evil bastard, but he's a very highly entertaining evil bastard.

I like these quiet character moments. There has to be some space for breathing between the big bloodlettings.

This show is one of the most satisfying on right now. Arya & the Hound are probably my favorite storylines this season, but I'm having no issue following all the storylines. I hope we have not seen the last of Bronn either.

Great Taste, Less Filler

With the gargantuan amount of material to cover from the books, I very much doubt the writers have time for "boobie filling." It has appeared that any seemingly irrelevant information is setting up a future plotline. This show has choked me up a few times a week all season, and Tyrion saying goodbye to his bodyguard was heart wrenching for me.

I haven't read the books either but I get the feeling that they're building up to Arya and the Hound, and Brienne and Pod, all arriving at the Eyrie at the same time, where things should hit the fan most epically.

Haven't read the books...

But the season preview showed the Mountain and the Prince fighting, been waiting for it anxiously, dying to see how good the Prince really is! Tyrion steals every scene he's in, as usual, but the Prince has something about him too, has me rooting for him to get a lot more screen time. Arya's revenge was perfect, her and the Hound really are a great pairing. That kooky bitch getting pushed into the hole was no surprise at all, I knew it was coming as soon as I heard Little Fingers voice, but the

All in all, another fine episode, can't wait for next week! Only downer is realizing there are only three episodes left...

Arya is becoming quite he bad ass. She couldn't put that dude on her list because she didn't know his name. And once he tells her, she runs him through like it was nothing. Fucking epic.
