TV Review: This Week on Game of Thrones (S5 Episode 2/ April 19, 2015)

NOTE: Join us every MONDAY as we review the latest episode...

EPISODE 2: The House of Black and White

THE PLOT : The long summer is at an end, winter truly is coming and with it the cold winds of war as five self proclaimed Kings claim dominance over Westeros, but there can be only one winner when you play the game of thrones.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode)Tonight we see Arya finally make it to Braavos. She’s escorted to The House of Black and White and told the one she seeks can be found there. Sounds good, right? Then some crusty old dude answers the door and turns her away. Frustrated, she sits on the front steps for what appears to be hours or even days, only to give up and toss her coin in the water. There’s always a test, I can understand that, can’t have just anyone showing up for admittance, but she’s been to hell and back, so you can’t help but feel for her. I loved the scene with the three guys in the streets wanting to throw down with her, I was so hoping to see her hand them their asses, but instead, the crusty old dude shows up again. When he reveals himself as Jaqen H’ghar I was pumped. THIS is the story I’m anxious to see pan out. That said, I can’t help but wonder, with Arya being so young and all, if by the time she’s trained and ready to actually do something, will the war be over?

Brienne and Podrick somehow manage to find themselves at the same Inn as Littlefinger and Sansa. I like Brienne, but she wears her emotions (and allegiance) on her sleeve and damn if it doesn’t get her into trouble. Her quest to help the Stark girls is noble, but who can blame Sansa and Arya for saying no? Having Littlefinger there to condescendingly retell his version of Brienne’s journey certainly doesn’t help. I’m liking where this is all going though, as it’s only a matter of time before Sansa is surrounded by trouble, and when that happens, having a stubborn as hell savior/stalker may not be such a bad thing. Of course, my excitement came full circle when Bronn came back on the scene. Funny, I barely remember him from the books, but as far as the show is concerned, he’s welcome anytime. Now teaming him up with Jaime Lannister? Well, damn, that’s the duo to watch for as far as I’m concerned.

The Wall tends to be hit or miss when it comes to excitement, but tonight was fairly intense. Let’s get right to it, Stannis offers to make Jon a Stark and Lord of Winterfell. It’s like “SAY WHAT!?” I almost had to rewind that part and watch it again. I love Jon Snow, I sincerely do, but his sense of honor is vastly frustrating. I get it, you swore and oath (blah, blah, blah), but did you not kill one of your own guys to infiltrate Mance’s group? Did you not sleep with Ygritte? Sure, it was all part of the ruse, but becoming Lord of Winterfell is the opportunity of opportunities for Jon Snow. How does he not see that? Yes, you have friends on the Wall. Yes, you want to help them out. But for the most part, these guys are thieves, rapists and overall scum who (as we’ve clearly witnessed) are prone to turn on one another at the drop of a dime. I mean, it’s all good and great that Sam speaks up for you and you win the mantle of Lord Commander, but case in point, you’d do well to remember what happened to poor old Mormont. Sigh. Apparently, you know nothing Jon Snow.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 5's second episode is doing what this show does best—moving its characters in interesting directions and making us crave more. This is what we’ve come to expect from this show, and I’m not disappointed. Tyrion and Varys make their way a little closer to Daenerys, but it’s good that their taking their time because she’s got a hell of a lot on her plate right now. A fair trial. I wonder if such a thing even exists in that world, as all we’ve seen up to this point would suggest the “no” column. These Harpy guys are killing the Unsullied, so you could say they’re making some pretty big waves. The solution? Eye of an eye justice baby! No, don’t do it out in the open where everyone can see it, but hell, no one even knew they had the guy until she told them. To make a big spectacle of it, and then kill one of your own for executing the Harpy first, is just sloppy. You lose the people, it won’t be long before you lose everything. She’s got to get the hell out of there already. Nothing good can come from staying. The final moment on the balcony was a real treat though. Drogon is still watching over you Dany, at least that’s something.

SEX/NUDITY: None this week. This is what happens when Littlefinger is no longer running the whorehouse.

VIOLENCE: Brienne takes out some of Littlefinger’s men, Podrick throws a rock at one, and Arya beheads a pigeon. Poor little guy.

MOST EPIC SCENE: Being an Arya fan, I loved the Jaqen H’ghar reveal, and who doesn’t love seeing dragons, but maybe it’s the agonizing loss of Oberyn that fueled my choice this week. I loved the introduction of Doran Martell. More importantly, I love the imagery, the luscious local, the jewelry (his golden coiled snake ring) and the weapons. That axe his bodyguard had, damn! I collect the weapon replicas and would very much love to see that axe come next. Everything about the brooding scene with Doran and Ellaria was a much welcome added twist to the rest of what’s already going on. Can’t wait to see more of that.

FINAL VERDICT :

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: Where the hell is Ghost? If I had a Direwolf, he’d never leave my side.

So far this season is pretty boring. The best thing about this episode was seeing Drogon, and that was quick. Hopefully the season picks up.

Have to say that this season is a dud so far, I would give this episode a 4 at best. Everyone was so jacked for the first episode after so long that it got a much higher rating than it deserved, but I understand that. I know I was glad to hear of Georges split from the writing team to work on his books, but maybe that was a bad idea, as so far the writing has been terrible!
They are planning from what it sounds like to condense two or more books into this one season yet so far they have had

They are planning from what it sounds like to condense two or more books into this one season yet so far they have had multiple filler scenes and the scenes with meat have been eviscerated!
Jon's election and his guilt and torment over the offer to become Lord of Winterfell were barely touched on. This was a MAJOR decision for him not just a oh I made an oath so I am sticking to it moment. And to belittle the contribution Sam made to the election, Heresy!
If this is how the rest of the season is going to be then I am almost willing to simply skip it until the books our done.
They are wasting soooo much screen time on crap, it does not bode well for the rest of the season, or how the book is going to be cut to shreds.
I have a feeling some MAJOR characters are going to be completely cut out and that is a shame.

As a book reader, this was the weakest episode since they nerfed the necromancers back in season 2. I'm kind of worried about what this episode's revelations imply for the future of the series. I feel like what happened with Sam's awesome scheme for getting Jon elected to Lord Commander - it getting cut down to barely one scene - is going to happen again with Arya and her training, and Tyrion with his trip on the Rhoyne.

And what the hell are they even *doing* with Brienne? Where's Lady

Don't Miss Chance

I'm making $86 an hour working from home. I was shocked when my neighbour told me she was averaging $65 but I see how it works now.

I feel so much freedom now that I'm my own boss. This is what I do...

I'm glad they're changing stuff from the books, especially when it comes to Tyrion. One thing's for certain, Jaime's story arc just got a lot better and I'm curious to see what happens with Brienne now that they've severely altered her course. Should be a great season.

Sending Jaime south is the one change I actually liked. Although if things happen in any way similar to how they happen in the book, this is going to seriously jeopardize Bron's chances of survival, since I'm pretty sure he'll be the one *actually* standing in for Arys Oakheard, what with the whole Arianne situation being more up his alley.

You think they are actually going to spend time on the Arys plotline LOL that is out the window for sure. Who knows if Jaime may have headed to Dorne in the later books that is no big deal really. But it would have been much more interesting for him to have Brienne along as their scenes are gold.

This was a solid episode. I really like the direction Arya's story is heading in. I can't wait to see how her training goes during this season. And it's cool they brought back Jaqen H'ghar as her trainer. He never returned in the books but he was a cool character, so I like they've been able to add him back to the story here.

I'm loving the direction they're taking Jamie Lannister. Over the past season and so far in Season 5 he's becoming one of my favourite characters given the arc

I'm loving the direction they're taking Jamie Lannister. Over the past season and so far in Season 5 he's becoming one of my favourite characters given the arc he's had. And I like the changes they made from his plot in the books to the show, I think it adds a lot more to his character. ***SPOILER ALERT*** He never goes to Dorne in the books, he goes to another castle to help defend it and another Kingsguard is sent to Dorne. So I like that they've changed it to him going to Dorne to bring back his daughter, it helps develop the arc of him turning into a man of honor (a la Ned Stark) whereas in the books his story kind of goes no where. And having him do this all with Bronn is the icing on the cake! Loving that they've found a way to keep him around.

And Dany needs to get her shit together. I get where she was coming from with executing the ex-slave for his crime. But he didn't even give him a trial either, she just made the decision. So she was ready to give the Son of the Harpy a trial, but not for the slave whom she claims to love so much? Her decision made no sense and goes to show she's not ready to rule, even if the she is the mother of dragons. That being said, can't wait for her to finally meet up with Tyrion so someone can help her get her shit together.

Is it me, or is it getting harder and harder to root for Daenerys these days?

There are many variations from the books, and will be more no doubt, but I'm liking the way things are playing out as well. Looking forward to as much Jaime and Bronn as they'll allow.

This was a good episode. Any episode where Jaqen and Bronn return is a welcome one by me. Arya's storyline should be entertaining to watch, but I'm curious if what happens int he books will happen to her, and how quickly they'll progress her story. I'm with you on Jon Snow's oaths, and how he seems to cherry pick the ones he thinks are important. The dude needs to relax already, he could be the Lord of Winterfell. But yeah lets just choose to stay Lord of the rapists and thieves until such time

But yeah lets just choose to stay Lord of the rapists and thieves until such time as they decide to kill me. Man did he ever make the right choice there #rollseyes. I did enjoy both the Tyrion and Varys as well as the Dorne segments. Yeah that Axe was badass. Welcome back Bronn, I like the reviewer don't remember him this much in the books. I know he was there but always seemed like a bit part for the most part. Yet on the show he is always so much fun. Dany's segments bored me yet again save the return of her lost dragon. The special effects of the dragons as they've grown have been stellar. The design is amazing. Here's to hoping we see some real throw down where they fight an army soon. We won't, but one can hope lol.
