TV Trailer Trio: Dracula, Almost Human, and Sleepy Hollow show some real promise

May. 13, 2013by: Paul Shirey

As the networks rally their new line-ups for the 2013-2014 TV season, we're now getting a peek at some of the projects they've had in development, many of which will be replacing those that didn't make the cut (such as the Beverly Hills Cop TV show, which was not picked up). Today, Fox unveiled a slew of new trailers for some of their upcoming shows, two of which show quite a bit of promise. J.J. Abrams' Almost Human, starring Karl Urban and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci's Sleepy Hollow with Tom Mison both look like the right mix of action, sci-fi, concept, and character to draw in viewers that fit the demographic (i.e. most of us here). In addition, NBC debuted a trailer for its revisionist take on Bram Stoker's Dracula with Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the titular role, which is from the producers of...Downton Abby?

Scroll below for the trailers and synopsis for each show.

Executive-produced by Emmy Award winner J.J. Abrams ("Fringe," "Lost," the "Star Trek" and "Mission: Impossible" franchises) and creator J.H. Wyman ("Fringe," "The Mexican") and starring Karl Urban ("Star Trek"), Michael Ealy ("Sleeper Cell," "Common Law") and Emmy Award nominee Lili Taylor ("Six Feet Under,"), ALMOST HUMAN is a high-tech, high-stakes action drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely partnership is forged when a part-machine cop (Urban) is forced to pair with a part-human robot (Ealy) as they fight crime and investigate a deeper cover-up in a futuristic new world.

From co-creators/executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (the "Star Trek" and "Transformers" franchises, "Fringe") comes the adventure thriller SLEEPY HOLLOW. In this modern-day retelling of Washington Irving's classic, ICHABOD CRANE (Tom Mison, "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen") is resurrected and pulled two and a half centuries through time to find that the world is on the brink of destruction and that he is humanity's last hope, forcing him to team up with a contemporary police officer (Nicole Beharie, "Shame," "American Violet") to unravel a mystery that dates back to the founding fathers.

Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers ("The Tudors") stars in this provocative new drama as one of the world's most iconic characters.

It's the late 19th century, and the mysterious Dracula has arrived in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. He's especially interested in the new technology of electricity, which promises to brighten the night - useful for someone who avoids the sun. But he has another reason for his travels: he hopes to take revenge on those who cursed him with immortality centuries earlier. Everything seems to be going according to plan... until he becomes infatuated with a woman who appears to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.

From the producers of the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning hit "Downton Abbey" comes "Dracula," a twisted, sophisticated and sexy take on Bram Stoker's classic novel, proving that some stories never die. One-hour drama.

I'm intrigued by each of these as they've all got quite a bit going for them. Karl Urban is perfectly suited for a leading man role in a J.J. Abrams show, Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a solid choice for Dracula, and the concept of Sleepy Hollow has me the most impressed. Seeing the headless horseman with automatic weapons in the modern day world with a fish-out-of-water Ichabod Crane? Insane! But, I love it. Let's hope these can deliver on their premise (and promise). Otherwise, it's off to the chopping block.

Almost Human, Sleepy Hollow, and Dracula air this fall on their respective networks. Check local listings for times.

Extra Tidbit: Which of these do you think shows the most promise?

I liked ALMOST HUMAN the best,

mainly because I enjoyed the interplay between Karl Urban and Michael Ealy. DRACULA could be good but it looks like they're taking way too many liberties with the character.

SLEEPY HOLLOW lost me when it stumbled into NATIONAL TREASURE territory.

Almost Human looks almost good, loved the set up but the last half of the trailer just didn't sell me. Sleepy Hollow looks like the strongest, but seems hard to sustain a series out of it. They all look interesting enough but I don't see them lasting....

Almost Human looks like it might be a lot of fun. Karl Urban is an actor in need of his own TV show, and the world looks properly futuristic (hopefully FOX will give it a chance). The others I'm not so crazy about. They might be fun diversions, but I'm ever wary of shows that try to reinvent classic literature.

Sh*t ...they all look great ...I just don't have the time to watch them all and when I choose not to watch a series...I never do. I have the complete boxset of Firefly and seasons 2-4 of 4400 still sitting on my shelf shrink wrapped (bought several years ago!!!).

Almost Human...Almost Entertaining.

I would have liked it a lot more if Almost Human allowed Urban to get stuck with those "straightfaced" synthetics. That would have allowed some tension and mystery to ensue, with the whole "the enemy is closer than you think" scenario. I lost interest the moment they introduced a "robot that can feel" into the mix who also happens to be his buddy-cop sidekick. Cliche much? I don't have to watch 5 seasons just to see how they "fix each other" or whatever. Could have been good though.

That's exactly where the trailer lost me, I would have preferred Urban being a dick to his synthetic partner. That was a pretty well earned laugh when he chucks him out of the car.

@fury159 : Yup. It went from being intriguing to utterly predictable in mere seconds.

@Cathelotte: Haven't seen that one, but I'll take your word for it.

Am I crazy,

or didn't I read that Josh Holloway was the lead in Almost Human instead of Karl Urban? What happened there?

These shows looked bland and uninspiring, at least Dracula seems to have some nice visuals and sets. But Almost Human looked exactly like that other yesterdays Buddycop/SciFi-show (what was it called, me and machine?) and the contemporary setting of sleepy hollow doesnt do the show any favors. I would have loved a whacky X-files, Supernatural show taking place in the 17th or 18th century. But I guess that would have been too expensive.

So Almost Human is basically I, Robot The Series, Sleepy Hollow is a horror version of National Treasure, and Dracula seem to be taking an advantage from Nikola Tesla's recent increase of popularity. None of these series actually offer anything new, but if I would have to pick from any of them I'd say I, Robot The Series is the most interesting one for me.

We've officially hit peak horror television when all the networks are reworking classic tales to make sickeningly mainstream shows. Haha...Starbucks ARE EVERYWHERE NOW! For fuck sakes...they were doing that tired time travel joke in Austin Powers movies 15 years ago.

Almost Human and Dracula seem interesting. I'm not sure what to think of Sleepy Hollow, the idea of a modern day Headless Horseman seems cool, but I'm not crazy about the whole time travel, buddy cop and Davinci Code Shenanigans.

Almost Human does look like it will be a good deal of fun, and there's the JJ Abrams stamp all over it. Karl Urban's character feels like the exact midpoint between Bones and Judge Dredd - which is awesome.

Damn, headless horseman killed Gallagher from Earth 2. Almost Human looks pretty good. Can't go wrong with Karl Urban, can't believe his on television now.

Almost Human looks like solid entertainment - fantastic to see Karl Urban taking the lead in that one. Perfect fit. I'm wondering how Sleepy Hollow will sustain its premise over multiple seasons... but Orci & Kurtzman have a decent track record, so am keeping my mind open. I like Mison in the lead. As for Dracula, it looks fine if that's what you're into.

Cool Poster, but it looks like shit other than that

Sleepy Hollow looks like a cool poster, but the show doesn't seem to follow the themes of that poster.

All three look cool, especially Dracula (I'm a big Tudors fan). But I have a feeling only one of these shows will actually have a full season or two. The other two will probably be cancelled after five or six episodes. I hope not because we need more "out there" riskier television shows.
