Twilight screenwriter to write and produce Marvel's Jessica Jones series for Netflix

11.13.2013

Yesterday we learned Drew Goddard will be writing the scripts for Marvel/Netflix's Daredevil series, and now we know how will be writing for the Jessica Jones series. No one from Marvel has confirmed it (yet), but Deadline is reporting that Melissa Rosenberg will write and executive produce the series. Rosenberg is probably best known for adapting the Twilight books for the big screen, but she has also done script work for several television series, including Dexter, Birds of Prey, and The O.C.

A Jessica Jones series was in the works three years ago for ABC, and Melissa Rosenberg was attached to that as well. But will she be using any of her material from that show for Netflix's new series? Probably not: the site says the series is "undergoing redevelopment in its move to Netflix."

Melissa Rosenberg is already very familiar with the character because of her work on the series for ABC, and I think it's a smart move by Marvel and Netflix to hire her for the new series. Some of her previous works might not be the best examples of what she could bring to a Jessica Jones series, but I think she could do a great job with the character.

The Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage series will premiere sometime in 2014 on Netflix.

Give me the name of one writer . . .

. . . who can take a Stephanie Meyers novel and turn it into a great screenplay.

Anyone? Anyone at all?

No, here's the thing: bad source material cannot be made into good movies without making fans of the poorly written books angry. This screenwriter is victim of the material, and at the very worse should be accused of poor judgment for adapting these books. Who out there could have done better?

Consider this: Andrew Niccol was a highly acclaimed screenwriter, and look at the result

Consider this: Andrew Niccol was a highly acclaimed screenwriter, and look at the result of his adaptation of The Host. Bad writing breeds bad writing. No matter how much you polish a turd, it is still a turd.

I'm sure Melissa Rosenberg can do a great job on this series, and she has other quality work to prove it.

This is Good News, the writer of the article just left out all of the information that makes it good!

Melissa Rosenberg did write the Twilight Screenplays, but she also was the lead writer for the first two season of Dexter and earned a ridiculous amount of praise for that. The woman has talent.

Read the series "Alias" by Brian Michael Bendis. It's the series that basically makes this character worth adapting.

Yeah, I know Marvel comics pretty flipping well from the beginning of the Silver Age up until the late 90's, but Jessica Jones is one of the newer characters that actually worth familiarizing yourself with. She and Sentry are possibly the two most notable new heroes they've introduced since 2000.

Well this sounds fucking horrible! Just because she was developing a series 3 years ago doesn't mean she's the best choice for this series. Have you seen what she developed? How do you know if that was any good. And look at her track record - writing Twilight and writing for Dexter, OC, and Birds of Prey. Some of the worst movies and tv shows in existence (I know Dexter isn't all bad, but it dropped huge in quality after season 4). I think we'll be seeing a very dumbed down version of

Rosenberg actually is a pretty talented writer. You're absolutely right, Dexter dropped a ton in quality after the first few seasons - and Rosenberg was the lead writer on the first two. She's been nominated for a slew of awards, including several Writer's Guild of America Awards (which are voted on by fellow screen writers).

Twilight

Take away Twilight and she's got some decent things on her resume. Stop bitching about a couple movies she probably made a killing doing that had shit source material to really work with. She made the movies that the twilight fans wanted. It's not for you... boo fucking hoo.

I'm just hoping if this does well, than it might give DC much more confidence to make a Wonder Woman film.

Go look at her resume on IMDB, she's not a hack, the writer of this article just decided to present the information in the most negative terms possible instead of actually focusing on her achievements, like the fact that she's been nominated for multiple Emmys and Writer's Guild of America awards.

Melissa Rosenberg has been attached to the Jessica Jones: Alias series since about 2010 I think, so it's good that it's finally getting off the road. The Twilight films are really very, very poorly written, but I guess she could still prove otherwise with this. Re extra tidbit, Eliza Dushku?
