Twilight's Catherine Hardwicke in talks to direct Love Letters to the Dead

05.29.2015

Lets just get this right out of the way, LOVE LETTERS TO THE DEAD is not an erotic zombie film; rather, it's an adaptation of the popular YA novel of the same name which follows a young woman as she writes a variety of letters to dead celebrities as a project for English class. I know, you're all disappointed.

The Hollywood Reporter has informed us that someone well versed with YA adaptations is in talks to step into the directors chair of LOVE LETTERS TO THE DEAD; Catherine Hardwicke, who kicked off the TWILIGHT franchise back in 2008, is in early talks to bring the project to life.

Here's the book synopsis via Amazon:

It begins as an assignment for English class: Write a letter to a dead person. Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May did. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to people like Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Amelia Earhart, Heath Ledger, and more -- though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating new friendships, falling in love for the first time, learning to live with her splintering family. And, finally, about the abuse she suffered while May was supposed to be looking out for her. Only then, once Laurel has written down the truth about what happened to herself, can she truly begin to accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was -- lovely and amazing and deeply flawed -- can she begin to discover her own path.

The project is being produced by Temple Hill Entertainment's Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, who produced the TWILIGHT series as well as other YA projects such as THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, THE MAZE RUNNER, and PAPER TOWNS, and will be written by "Love Letters to Dead People" author Ava Dellaira. Catherine Hardwicke is currently putting the finishing touches on MISS YOU ALREADY, a comedy/drama which stars Drew Barrymore, Toni Collette, and Dominic Cooper.
