Two new stills from Monsters University show off the colorful characters we can hope to see

It's not like Pixar has ever really made an unattractive or bland movie, but they seem to be pushing as hard as they can in the opposite direction just to be safe. No matter what you thought of the movie itself, I think it's safe to say we all agree that BRAVE was achingly, stunningly, unfairly beautiful. Especially if you've ever seen the Blu-ray version played on a large hi-def teivision - just... whoa.  And if these stills from MONSTERS UNIVERSITY are any indication, Pixar is taking no chances with their rep regarding visuals.  The colors, the textures, the composition, the shadows - everything in these two stills looks stellar in a way I wouldn't have imagined.

I'm becoming more and more excited for MONSTERS UNIVERSITY at a very gradual pace (the slowness due to it being a prequel more than anything else), and while it's not to the level of previous Pixar releases just yet I'm sure I'll be there by the time the movie arrives in theaters on June 21st.

In the meantime, check out the stills below and let us know what you think below that!

My problem with this film, is that just by looking at the posters and not the pics, you can already tell what is going to happen. Sully is a bully, picking on Mike. Mike is smart, and Sully needs his help to get past college. Will they gain a good friendship? Oh, I don't know.....yes???

i had no problem with Cars or Cars 2. I think the issue was that people couldn't get past the fact that they were talking cars. The logistics behind that is mind boggling, how does a world where everything is a car work? So it made the movie look much sillier than the other Pixar movies. Combine that with a solid, but tired, moral premise and an legacy that includes Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles to live up to. And you get a disappointing movie. I'm able to see past the cars/human

I'm able to see past the cars/human issue, and the legacy so i really enjoyed both movies. They were funny and had a possitive message that didnt seem cliche (the enviromental lesson in Cars 2 was cliche, but the be yourself part that Mater learns was refreshing).

As for Monsters University, i expence nods to Animal House, Revenge of the Nerds, and John Hughs movies, while at the same time seperating itself from other Pixar movies, including Monsters Inc. They are the same characters but this is before then became friends, so their personalities would be different. Mike is the nerd and sully is the jock, they arnt work office buddies like in the last movie. I expect this to have a similar feel to the begining of 21 Jump street where each one helps the other to succeed until a more clear dilema is shown to test thier friendship. Should be good.

I'm 100% in agreement with ya. Talking toys, with mouths and faces? Sure. Talking monsters? Sure. Talking insects? Sure. Talking fish? Sure. Talking ANYTHING that has a face/mouth? SURE.

Talking cars...with...no faces...but you wanna GIVE them faces...ummmm....no.

the only issue with Cars 2 i had was that it was made because the toys sold a crazy amount. I can appreciate Pixar trying to make it different with the whole world race/spy chase story lines, but this is the equivalent to Tarantino's Death Proof, far from a bad film, but far from the best film in their library. But i have faith in MU, a lot of faith actually.

Cars 2's problem was that John Lasseter thought having Tow Mater up onscreen for 90 minutes would be funny. I can take the character in small doses but he's simply not strong enough to carry a whole movie.
What made Monsters Inc. so wonderful was the story of Sully and Boo and how the two characters learned to love each other. Right now, Monsters U looks like a gimmick: Mike & Sully meet in college, initially hate each other but learn to be friends. Pixar will have to work extra hard to

Pixar will have to work extra hard to make that story as moving as Monsters Inc.'s plot.
The other big concern is that I don't see Pete Docter or Bob Peterson's names anywhere on this thing.

Cars 2 suffered primarily by being the sequel to Cars, which sucked in and of itself. MU doesn't have that problem, since MI was so good. The problem is the ending of MI....monsters are now, and forever(?) going to be FUNNY? What kind of world is that? It was a cutesy end to MI, but it meant that any sequel would be set in a world that makes no inherent sense to people, so there's a huge hurdle of breaking down people's preconceived notions to overcome.

yeah, this is a prequel of how Mike and Sully met, so their world is still all about getting screams, but that wont be the focus like in the last movie

honest mistake.

in fact, i expect Disney to put alot of marketing into explaining that this is a prequel. This is kinda rare for disney to do,
