Two screenwriters back from the set of Pacific Rim tell us what they witnessed there

Feb. 22, 2012by:

Guillermo Del Toro with the right hand of doomTo me, Guillermo del Toro is just about the coolest dude on the whole planet. But I will spare you the depth of my love for the best thing Mexico has ever given the world, and instead jump straight to today's news. Screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (FEAST, PIRANHA 3DD) were brought in to do a bit of script doctoring on Guillermo's monster-epic PACIFIC RIM, and shared in an exclusive interview over at FEARnet these responses to what they witnessed while in Toronto (where Guillermo is shooting):

Patrick Melton: "It is going to kick major ass. It's giant monsters versus giant robots, and Guillermo del Toro is the only person who could bring it to you. That was an amazing experience, because we read the script, and so we went in knowing what the producers and studio wanted us to do; and we went in and met Guillermo, and he started showing us the tests by ILM. They were just mind-blowing. I think they'll probably show something at Comic-Con 2012... I'm telling you, it's gonna rule Hall H when Guillermo, the king of geeks, comes out and shows some of the stuff he's shot."

Marcus Dunstan: "We've been denied a Guillermo del Toro movie for a few years now, and we had the feeling in sharing some time with him that there's been a well, that became a dam, that became a crushing force waiting to burst and give everything to Pacific Rim. I think he's the Santa Claus of fantasy, and he's going to gift everyone with an experience. Bring dad, bring the kids, bring everybody, and hold on."

Melton again: "This is a PG movie.  Most of his stuff is pretty edgy, for the most part. Nothing below PG-13 that I can think of. So this is his sort of four-quadrant movie. But it's got all the traits of a Guillermo movie, with the monsters and the younger characters and the things that go bump in the night."

PG? Not that that's bad, but it sounds a bit suspicious for a movie involving giant alien/monster/robot battles crafted by Guillermo del Toro.  But that's just it: crafted by Guillermo del Toro.  Not that he can do no wrong, but... well, I trust the guy.  I have faith that he'll still be able to deliver everything he wants and more within a PG framework.  Ratings get pushed an awful lot these days, and if there is anyone who can successfully champion telling children the kinds of darker, layered stories that were once used I'd say it's Guillermo.

Updated: PACIFIC RIM is definitely PG-13.

To mix and match my geek metaphors - I believe in del Toro.

Guillermo Del Toro with spectacles

Extra Tidbit: I think "the Santa Claus of fantasy" is a pitch-perfect moniker for Guillermo Del Toro in every way possible.

We're jaded because we're fanboys. But remember that all of the Sci Fi movies we love from our childhood...Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, and (most relevant) every Godzilla movie were rated PG.

And I say good. Movies about giant monsters and giant robots fighting in cities don't need profanity, racist humor, drug references, masturbation jokes, or upskirt panty shots (looking at you Michael Bay.) Appeal to the kid in me, not the hormonal 12-year old in me.

Ratings obsession

I don't get this site's obsession with the rating of a movie. Who cares if it's Pg-13 or R rated? The difference between the two ratings comes down to profanity, nudity, and amount of blood. None of those things truly factor in when it comes to a film's true quality. And so many times I've seen PG-13 used on this site as an argument against a future movie's worthiness, when so many great movies and classics have G, PG, and PG-13 ratings.

I agree totally...although you will now likely be getting insults from a certain asshole who takes his name from a shitty kids' cartoon.

I agree in a way that it may be getting a bit obsessive here, i dont feel a film like this needs an R for it to be great, they're classics with all sorts've ratings no doubt, i think what most people, like myself, get upset about with this issue is if a film that has all the workings of an R-rated movie gets truncated to PG-13 to reach a wider audience (e.g. Die Hard 4, AVP, EX 2), it doesnt mean they are bad movies but fans feel a bit cheated, its like watching a porn movie with all the good

Just to clarify - I don't think that a PG or PG-13 rating is a death knell by any means. I love plenty of movies which bear those ratings. I just was surprised is all, considering that I'd been expecting something different. But I definitely am not of the opinion that anyone should think anything less of PACIFIC RIM due to its rating.

PG

It probably wont matter much cause its monsters vs robots. Even kids will understand its make believe so the need for a harder rating probably isn't necessary. I actually hope this movie scares the shit out of little kids as there hasn't been much out there to do that in recent...... decades.

Extra Tidbit: Yes and No.

I had the pleasure of meeting him once at my comic shop and I'll tell you this: You know how kids can be scared of Santa? Not so with del Toro. He put me instantly at ease. The man is a visual hug. He was getting some reading material before he went off to shoot HBII, and he asked me what my opinion would be if Bruce Campbell voiced Lobster Johnson in something(He didn't say what). I didn't/couldn't play it cool, I told him I was over the moon about the idea and that it was as perfect as

He thanked me for my input, as he rarely gets any in person during the beginning stages of projects. So if anything he's BETTER than Santa as A) He exists and B) Nobody'd be scared to have their picture taken with him. Bonus: His gifts never break.

PG13 doesn't bother me so much. You can have amazing action in PG13, jsut not so much violence. Giant monesters vs mechs sounds more action than bloody to me anyway. Plus this has Charlie Day in it too, jesus, how many reasons do you need to see a film!!!

Can I just say that PG has gotten a bad rap lately. I mean, the only movies rated PG today are movies that, when I was growing up, would only warrant a G-rating. The MPAA will probably slap a PG-13 rating on there for intensity or something, but I've been kind of hoping for another good--dare I say grown-up?--PG-rated movie. They're not about gore, but about story.

"This is a PG movie. Most of his stuff is pretty edgy, for the most part. Nothing below PG-13 that I can think of." I took this to saying that it will be PG-13, not R because it is staying in the PG I could be wrong though.

You know, I think you're right. May have just been a typo on the part of the person transcribing the interview...

Sounds like fun, this one has really gone under the radar in a way but im sure will kick everyones as when footage shows up. Don't think this needs to R, the greatest giant monster flicks e.g. the Godzilla series never needed bloodletting to be a blast, its all about destruction on a giant scale and behamoths throwing down.

Just FYI - IT'S NOT PG, Guillermo confirmed it's a PG-13 movie last week on DTF forums. Check the upcoming movies section thread on this forum, all the info is there

Thanks for the update! Guess the writers misspoke, or meant something different than the interviewer thought.
