UK trailer for GI JOE Retaliation gets tough with some new footage

02.16.2012

MSN has an exclusive look at the new UK trailer for G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, which has a few new slices of footage and dialogue. It's not massively different, but still a good watch.

Check it out below:

I'm really liking what G.I. JOE: RETALIATION is bringing to the table. I loathed GIJOE: THE RISE OF COBRA at a cellular level. I'm a child of the 80's and grew up with GI JOE in all their 3.75" glory, so it was massively disappointing to see so much of their allure sucked out and replaced with gadgets and space suits.

I was severely apprehensive when John Chu (STEP UP films) came on board to direct, but holy crap, you can't deny the badassery that the footage for G.I. JOE: RETALIATION brings. Chu seems to have embraced the varied costumes to an extent and the addition of a new Cobra Commander with mirror mask helmet is straight up awesome in a can. I look forward to hearing his raspy voice talk about killing the joes. Or ordering a pizza.

Speaking to MTV, Chu had this to say about his interpretation of Cobra Commander:

"There are a couple things I really wanted to do in this movie. One of those things was reinvent Cobra Commander, to do it the way I remember him and take him to the next level. To me, Cobra is one of the most iconic villains of all time. I just wanted to know that was him. I wanted to make him more badass than ever.

We got to design him from the ground up. Creating the mask, we went through 35 revisions and how his voice was going to be, how reflective it was going to be. He's definitely a huge presence, and I can't wait. I'm sort of trying to hide a little bit, so people when they come don't know what to expect from Cobra, which is sort of the fun part of it."

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, starring Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Ray Park, Walton Goggins, Arnold Vosloo, D.J. Cotrona, and Jonathan Pryce opens fire on June 29, 2012.

Oh...hello Adrianne Palicki...

More like Hama's vision

It's easy to see that Sommer's vision for the original was largely inspired by the cartoon that was just about as deep as a mud puddle; both were made to help Hasbro make money. Not a great movie; not a bad movie, it was just a summer popcorn flick. Being a 80s kid, I was just happy to see a piece of my childhood on the big screen. Chu is definitely taking inspiration from Larry Hama's writing and putting forward a version largely based on the comic book. No one remembers, but there wasn't one

No one remembers, but there wasn't one writer at Marvel who wanted to touch this property at the time. Hama took the reins and infused both his military experience and Asian heritage into a great comic. Looking forward to seeing it!

Honestly, I liked the first one. Didn't love it, but I saw it for what it was..a live-action movie of a cartoon made to sell toys to kids. I'm a child of the 80's, watched the cartoon, had a few of the toys, and I liked the few different takes Sommers took on the 80's cartoon. It was fun, it was cheesy, and a few people died. The only thing missing, was a cheesy PSA at the end of the credits. The kind they used to do at the end of every show. "Knowing is half the battle.." is known by every kid

With that said, I'm looking forward to more cheesy fun with the sequel. Everyone looking for a "bad-ass, hard-R" GI Joe movie, still doesn't get that this is still a franchise aimed at selling toys to kids. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you may be able to calm the fanboy rage and be able to enjoy the movie for what it is.

That's a great question

I have been actually watching reruns of the cartoon nightly on HUB recently and I notice how much they shifted the focus from seasons 1 and 2 with different Joe's. More Flint than Duke is an example. I was a bigger fan of Duke, Snake Eyes, Stalker, Gung-Ho, etc. Season 2 seemed to just overload the characters, none which I really got into...Beach Head was pretty cool and I had the Bazooka figure. I'm rambling tonight, but I always liked the comings together of the best of all the services and

This movie franchise has potential cause you could easily put all kinds of storylines using these different characters on different missions in fights against Cobra. Plus, in the era of prequels and origin stories you'd have to go with Snake Eyes for one of them since he's the most intriguing character. But I honestly couldn't hand pick one character or who would play them right now. Maybe after this next one comes out and if it's done well something will pop to mind.

PORKCHOP SANDWICHES!

Seriously, I think this is the GI JOE movie we have been waiting for, not that Spy-Kids-ish crap we got last time.

Nobody remembers

That everybody went gaga for the first films trailer and that turned out to be a massive failure. Don't get excited just yet. It already looks like it is going to have continual issues because the first took place in "the near future" Whereas everything in this film looks like 2012...watch this sit on everybody's "Worst of" lists by the end of the year, Mark my words...

Tomax and Xamot!!!

The reality is I think they look like Willem Dafoe in the cartoon but I think someone like Tom Hardy could pull it off nicely!

Yeah I really liked the first one (for what it was). Then again I don't have a real emotional attachment to G.I. Joe so I guess I was just able to enjoy it for its stupid over the top fun.
As for this one, I'm pretty impressed, especially considering how terrible I thought it'd be with the guy from Step Up 2-3 directing, but I'm 90% sold. The only thing I don't love is Bruce Willis. I love Bruce but it just screams of "oh and Bruce Willis stops by too for some reason!". Nice to see Bruce

Nice to see Bruce stretching out those acting muscles and not just playing John McClane vol. 4/Frank Moses/Cop Out guy/'bald copsoldierfighter with gun' for the 8th time in a row. Oh right nevermind.

I still don't understand the hate for the first one. It was mindless fun. But this one looks even more fun.

I would love to see Sgt. Slaughter in a movie played by Sgt. Slaughter.

Didn't hate the first one. It just didn't feel like a Joe movie to me.

@Great One; what IS a Joe movie? The morality tale at the end was missing?

Rock n' Roll

This looks awesome. I'd like to see Rock n' Roll in the next one, played by me. Seriously, it would be cool to cast fans in the movie, even as cameos. I've got the beard and everything.
But seriously, Stalker would be awesome, played by Idris Elba. And Flash (the laser gun one), not sure who would play him.

Tod Lowe as Rock n Roll is an interesting choice. He'd need to hit the gym and get a tan, since R&R is a surfer. Maybe Matthew McConnaughy with a beard? Could work...

A couple of things: I really hope that Dwayne will be the main character in the movie and not Tatum.
I also hope for a lot more screen time for Byung-hun Lee, he's always awesome
And lastly, I usually think that Palicki is hellua attractive but in this pic? Not really
